'Swansea dominant from the get-go'

'Swansea dominant from the get-go'

BBC News2 hours ago
Swansea City's season is up and running with a win that was thoroughly deserved after countless chances for the hosts. What was clear is that Sheffield United's brief was "defend" and Swansea City's was "attack". This was made clear by a huge contrast in the opportunities in front of goal - Ruben Selles' side did not manage a single shot on target in the whole game. Swansea goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux didn't have a save to make. No, the table doesn't matter right now, but it's hard to believe the Blades, who are rock bottom, were playing in the play-off final a matter of months ago.Their opponents that day, Sunderland, have recorded their first win in their first game back in the top-flight.Meanwhile Sheffield United lacked any sort of threat in front of goal. The players looked completely dejected at full time, and that was only exacerbated when you see the faces of the clearly frustrated fans, who travelled 239 miles to watch their team come nowhere near a point in the 27 degree heat in South Wales.Swansea, meanwhile, were dominant from the get-go. Alan Sheehan's side thoroughly deserved the win. Chances in double figures, but, perhaps you'll then wonder, why not more than one goal? Well it's the age old issue. They lack an out-and-out striker. Now that is no disrespect to Wales international Liam Cullen who played up front for the Swans against the Blades, but he is playing out of position trying to lead the attack as a nine, and is better with someone alongside him. It's clear an additional striker is needed. Just the 16 days until Deadline Day. But take nothing away from a game full of chances and a fanbase buoyed by an encouraging attacking performance.

Man Utd 0-1 Arsenal: What Amorim said

Manchester United lost 0-1 at home to Arsenal in their opening Premier League match on Sunday and boss Ruben Amorim believes his side were 'the better team' but need to focus if they want to win matches. "I'm really proud of the guys. They were really brave in everything they did during the game. Congratulations for the performance. We deserved a different result and we need to move forward to the next one," Amorim told Sky Sports. "We were more aggressive than last year. We went one against one all of the game and we pressed high. We had quality with the ball. Even when the stadium made some sounds, we continued to play the way we play."You always feel in the game they can do something not just with the ball but without the ball. I am proud of the game we played. We lost and have things to work on."We need to win games but that was completely different to last season."On Arsenal goal: "Sometimes it happened last year. It's not playing the ball. I understand we want goals but when you are touching the goalkeeper, sometimes you are pushing and you don't have more hands to go for the ball. "We need to be stronger. We are not changing the rules, we have to adapt to the rules. Today I think we are the better team."We have players to win any game of the Premier League. We need to focus and forget about the noise. It doesn't matter who is playing, we want to win games."

'You expect to see the game out'

Oxford United manager Gary Rowett spoke to BBC Radio Oxford after the 3-2 defeat at Hull City"We changed the shape several times just to try and give ourselves a little bit more of a foothold," he said. "Of course they start and score a goal early, which is very disappointing from our perspective, and then to come in at half-time - I thought we rode our luck really first half."We ended up scoring two very good goals, both from set-pieces, but ultimately we probably should have been a couple more goals down because it was far too easy for them to open us up and create chances."[We] Switched to a five [at the back in the] second half to give us a bit of grip in the game defensively."We didn't get up the pitch enough, but I don't think they had many big chances. I thought we looked quite solid. You expect to see the game out."

Eberechi Eze shows why he is worth his £55million price tag as Tottenham push to seal transfer, writes KIERAN GILL - and why Arsenal may regret cooling interest in Crystal Palace star

Crystal Palace fans chanted 'it's not football anymore' after Eberechi Eze was denied what could have been his last-ever goal for the club when a niche law saw his ferocious free-kick disallowed. With Tottenham Hotspur pushing to sign the 27-year-old – so hard that he was in and out of Palace's travelling squad over the weekend – Eze looked like he had shown why he is worth his £55million valuation. It was a scorching strike and one which bamboozled Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, but it was then that Law 13 was taken into account by the referee, Darren England, after a VAR alert. Marc Guehi was judged to have been standing within a metre of Chelsea's defending wall. Technically, it was the correct call as per the rulebook. However, this was hardly a law that has been consistently enforced ever since its introduction in the Premier League in 2019. Already disillusioned after being demoted to the Conference League from the Europa League by UEFA, this did little to dissuade Palace supporters from thinking the game is against them. They were quick to find footage showing how Reece James' free-kick against Bournemouth at this very stadium last season should likewise have been disallowed because of Law 13. Marc Cucurella was practically touching the Cherries wall while stood next to Tosin Adarabioyo. As Palace defender Chris Richards said afterwards: 'Everyone in the stadium thought it was a goal but you live and die by VAR and we died from it.' Manager Oliver Glasner added on Eze: 'Eberechi should have scored a goal. He had one and it was disallowed. He will come to the Crystal Palace training ground on Monday, Tuesday off, we take Wednesday and I expect him to be back playing for us against Fredrikstad (in the Conference League play-off first leg on Thursday).' Because of the decision, Eze missed out on his potential fond farewell, though did show in his overall performance why Arsenal could regret cooling their interest in him if Spurs make him their next £55m signing. When substituted in the 84th minute, Eze took a moment to turn to the away end as he walked towards the touchline. The supporters showed their appreciation for a player who was signed for £19.5m from Queens Park Rangers in 2020.
