MANY of us will remember our gym teachers saying: 'Pack away the basketballs and hockey sticks, it's time for social dancing.'
Those school sessions, where we'd enter an unknown land of Dashing White Sergeants and Gay Gordons, set us up for being whirled about at weddings and parties in later life.

The adventure park is perfect for kids
And I got to relive that dance floor adventure with my wee boy on a mini-break at Crieff Hydro.
The stunning Perthshire resort is a haven for families, full of activities to entertain kids, both big and small.
And, for me, our highlight was the Saturday night ceilidh, where I spun five-year-old Jimmy around the ballroom for jigs and reels, leaving us grinning like loons.
We arrived on a rainy Friday and checked into our spacious family room with gorgeous views.
Gin and tonics had been left for the adults while the wee one was delighted with a bag of pick and mix — welcome, thoughtful touches.
Each day, guests are provided with a daily activity rota with fun to be had every hour. We ditched our cases and immediately headed for an Animal Man session, where youngsters were introduced to amazing creatures while the adults relaxed — at one point I spotted a chicken wandering across the ballroom, and I'd only had a half pint!
After a quick jaunt round the expansive grounds, we got dressed for the evening activities, starting with cocktails in the Ballroom Bar.
You couldn't ask for a better vista to enjoy a cool drink, looking out over the rolling Perthshire Hills.
My Penicillin was bitter and punchy, just how I like it, while husband Ryan loved his decadent Kir Royale and Jimmy was delighted with his bubblegum spritz mocktail.
Dinner was at one of the Hydro's new restaurants, East, established after a multi-million pound revamp. Serving Asian fusion small plates, the menu has so many tempting dishes. A couple of highlights were black pepper beef fillet and sticky corn ribs, while Jimmy hoovered up sticky pork belly.

It was early to bed as we were up at the crack of dawn for a delicious buffet breakfast before a Highland Safari, an amazing must-do experience just 40 minutes from the hotel.
We packed into a Land Rover with an expert guide who drove us high into the mountains passing through Dull on the way — and the trip was anything but.
We learned about the flora, fauna and history of the area while we gasped at the stunning scenery.
Jimmy loved hearing some of the wackier facts, like how a woodpecker wraps its tongue around its brain to soften the impact of drilling into trees with its beak.

Next on the agenda was a red deer experience back at Highland Safari base. We found out all about the beautiful creatures before getting up close to feed them. And before we headed back to the hotel we got to pan for gold, sifting through stones to find hidden gems — I was hooked on delving deep for gemstones like jasper and pyrite.
We arrived back at the Hydro around 3pm, just in time for a treasure hunt, looking for hidden clues in a bid to win a medal.
Glory secured, we had time for a relaxing dip in the pool before more cocktails and dinner, this time at the family-friendly Italian Piccolo.
And, after fuelling up on pizza and pasta, it was time for my main event, the ceilidh.

We danced into the night with expert musicians taking us through the steps and throwing in kids' classics, like the Hokey Cokey, to keep everyone on their feet.
We were checking out on Sunday, but not before we headed for the on-site Action Glen where you can try everything from mini Land Rovers and disc-golf to axe throwing and archery.
We had a fantastic time sampling almost everything before home-time.
Crieff Hydro really is an exceptional escape for families — and we'll be St Bernard's Waltzing back as soon as possible.

After an enjoyable week playing in the European Transnational Championships in Poznan recently (the Mixed Teams), I had time to spare before catching my flight home. The Open Teams had just begun, so I decided to kibitz for a while. I chose to sit behind the iconic Swedish player Peter Fredin, who I've been following keenly ever since he opened a strong No Trump against me with nul points many years ago. My partner and I never guessed we were cold for a grand slam. I soon found out that he was famous for his uncanny ability to read both cards and players. Opponents aren't even safe saying 'Thank you' when dummy goes down: he'll glean some information from the way they say it. He was partnering Artur Malinowski, another player with fantastic imagination and flair. It was a promising combination, and I wasn't disappointed. On this deal, Malinowski was South. Put yourself in his shoes: Being green vs red, you'd like to make a Michaels cue-bid showing both majors – but not at the seven-level. Most other Wests also opened 5♣️, quite a few Easts raised to 6♣️, and in both cases, the majority of Souths passed. Some Souths doubled, but were left regretting it when their partners passed (6♣️ was cold). One South bid a fearless 6♥️. Malinowski's choice? A brilliant 6♦️! He knew he'd be doubled. His plan was to redouble. He was confident that Fredin would be on the same wavelength, and realise it was an SOS, showing the other two suits. He was right: West doubled, Malinowski redoubled, and Fredin pulled to 6♥️, which East doubled. Three down was -500, a great score compared to -1370. Only one other brave South (a top Swedish player) bid 6♦️, but when he then redoubled, his partner passed. Minus 4000 is a score neither will forget in a hurry.

00s rockstar claims party 'saved his life' after defying doctor's orders

Awards shows might seem like a formal affair but in the 2000s, where indie sleaze reigned supreme, parties tended to get unruly. Two decades on, one particular award show has stuck in the mind of The Cribs frontman Ryan Jarman – 2006's NME Awards. 'I was leaving like trails of blood everywhere,' he recalled of the infamous evening that saw him dive onto the table filled with bottles and glasses in a spur-of-the-moment move. Unfortunately for the Men's Needs hitmaker, he ended up puncturing his kidney in the process. 'Something conspired where we were getting handed an award, which we weren't up for, but I ended up jumping on the table, I landed on this vase and it smashed, stuck straight through my back,' Ryan, 44, shared. The award in question, best live band, was actually destined for Franz Ferdinand but they weren't in attendance, so the Kaiser Chiefs took the trophy. Feeling selfless, Ricky Wilson then offered it to Ryan, who can be seen in grainy clips absolutely flying across the table out of nowhere. He awkwardly rolls off and lands on the floor, standing up quickly to let everyone know he was okay – despite the gaping hole in his back. Speaking on The Rise And Fall Of Indie Sleaze podcast on BBC Sounds, Ryan said: 'I guess when you do stuff like that, you don't feel it because there's no nerves in there or whatever and when I came offstage after getting the award, I put my hand on my back and my fingers just went straight inside. 'I was like, 'Oh my God!' So we went straight to the hospital and they stitched me up and they said, 'You've got to go straight back to the hotel and go to sleep, do not go back out tonight.'' Of course, being a rock star who maybe had had a few drinks and wanted to enjoy his night, Ryan headed back to the party instead. Turns out, his determination to return to the now closed Hammersmith Palais may have saved his life. 'It was a really good job I went back to the awards because they hadn't stitched me up properly,' he revealed. 'They hadn't stitched me up internally and I was like blowing up like a balloon. 'I was leaving like trails of blood everywhere and if I had gone back to the hotel, I don't think I would have made it through the night anyway.' The next day, his phone was blowing up with messages from people wanting pictures of his gastly wound, which his publicity team thought was 'good work'. 'I'm just like blood everywhere and feeling depressed,' he said. 'I guess it was a good thing, you know what I mean?' More Trending His partner at the time, the equally iconic Kate Nash, used the video in her defence when she was 'banned' from the awards show years later. After the pair split in 2012, after seven years together, she claims she was told she couldn't go as The Cribs were getting an award for outstanding contribution to music. 'I was like, 'Me? Based on what reputation? What am I gonna do that's gonna be so crazy?' I'm like, 'He's literally done that!' Got a story?
