the 'Dhadkan' star opened up about how the concept of
mental health
was practically non-existent during his youth. People around him weren't aware of what emotional or psychological distress looked like, and expressions of sadness or withdrawal were often dismissed or misunderstood.
When he experienced moments of low energy or sadness as a youngster, it wasn't viewed through a lens of psychological well-being. In those days, such emotions were often handled with tough love. Shetty recalled how his mother would respond with strict discipline, pulling him out of the funk through physical or verbal jostling rather than conversation or empathy. Instead of being allowed to dwell in sadness, he was pushed into action—told to tidy up his room or get moving early in the morning.

"No one knew what depression was or talked about it. If you were down, your mom would just slap you once, and all the depression would disappear. Today, people sit in their rooms, but back then our mom would say, Get out, clean the room, it's 8 o'clock already. And if we didn't come out, she would smack us," Shetty recalled.
There was no understanding of what it meant to be mentally strong or emotionally unwell. No one in his circle ever discussed topics like depression, therapy, or mental health. The prevailing attitude was one of resilience and moving forward without complaint, a stark contrast to the more open and sensitive conversations being encouraged today.
Recognizing the vast change in perspective over the years, Shetty has taken meaningful steps to contribute to the evolving dialogue around mental health. In 2023, he introduced a wellness-focused digital initiative called Let's Get Happi. This mobile application was designed to make
emotional support
easily available, offering users real-time access to therapists around the clock. The app was created with the intention to make mental health care accessible, affordable, and free of stigma—a modern answer to an age-old struggle.
