MBJB: Food premises must keep toilets clean for licence renewal
DINERS in Johor Baru can now expect cleaner public washrooms at all food premises.
This is due to a minimum four-star rating requirement under a new initiative by Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) taking effect this year.
Johor Baru mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad said the 'Bersih, Menawan dan Wangi' (clean, attractive and fragrant) initiative was now part of guidelines for licence renewal approval.
'Operators must ensure their toilets achieve at least a four-star rating during inspections.
'Failure to do so will bar them from being able to renew their business licences,' he said in his speech at the city council's monthly full board meeting at Menara MBJB.
Mohd Haffiz said the move marked a significant push by MBJB to raise hygiene standards across the city's 7,435 eateries.
'The new rule applies to all food premises, irrespective of whether they are 24-hour restaurants or not.
'To support the implementation, the city council will provide operators with a self-assessment checklist before enforcement officers carry out scheduled inspections.
'If the toilets fall short of the criteria, operators are expected to carry out necessary cleaning or upgrades before applying for renewal again.'
He added that enforcement action could also be taken under existing by-laws if operators failed to comply.
'MBJB hopes this measure will not only improve hygiene in eateries but also promote greater care for external areas such as kitchens, back lanes and surroundings.
'Toilet cleanliness reflects the overall hygiene and image of a business.
'It also speaks volumes about our city,' Mohd Haffiz said.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 — The Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) has reclassified all car wash centres in its jurisdiction as 'high-risk businesses,' putting them under increased monitoring and heavier regulation. JB Mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad said the stricter rules were introduced after complaints about poor practices and alleged discrimination against local customers. He also warned that centres found favouring foreign clients over locals risk losing their licences, The Star reported. Previously, a viral post alleged that a centre refused serve to Malaysians in order to cater to Singaporeans, though MBJB has yet to receive an official complaint. The mayor suggested that such cases may be linked to centres prioritising full-service packages during peak times. He said the new rules aim to ensure operators uphold cleanliness, environmental responsibility, and fair service practices. New applicants must prove their premises have proper drainage and do not harm roads or waterways. Centres employing foreigners must maintain complete records of their staff and submit to checks by MBJB and Immigration. The city has already shut down 86 car wash businesses in 18 months for operating without approval.

JB City Hall to offer up to 80pc discount on traffic fines ahead of 68th National Day, starting Aug 15
JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 1 — Johor Bahru City Hall (MBJB) is offering discounts of up to 80 per cent on traffic and parking fines in conjunction with the 68th National Day celebrations. In a statement, MBJB said the offer, which runs from Aug 15 to 31, is intended to encourage the public to settle outstanding fines. 'The 80 per cent discount applies to fines issued from 2016 to December 2024. For fines issued in 2025, a 60 per cent discount will be given in line with our standard rate,' it said. Payments can be made through various channels, including the MBJBSpot app, MBJB service counters, MBJB payment kiosks, e-Khidmat app and the PBTPay portal. MBJB urged residents to take advantage of the offer and clear any outstanding fines before the promotion ends. — Bernama
