What we learned from the Irish League this week - comeback wins, hat-tricks, London buses and same old Cooper
After several months of anticipation the Irish League was back with a bang last weekend, although coming the final whistle after the first round of fixtures a few fans might have been calling for a restart. With Larne and Linfield's extended run in the Conference League there was a double helping of Irish Premiership fixtures on Saturday and Sunday. We had goals, drama, supporters complaining about refereeing decisions once more, three away wins on Saturday and three homes wins on Sunday. READ MORE: PSNI release ten new images of men wanted following Ballymena riots READ MORE: Hugh Malone appears in court charged with Downpatrick murder Here are the key points to takeaway from the first round of fixtures... The Irish League has always had an element of unpredictability about it, and that was served up perfectly again at Seaview on Saturday. Declan Caddell's young Crusaders side looked to be heading towards a superb three points after they cut through the Carrick Rangers defence like the proverbial hot knife through butter racing into a three-goal lead inside 32 minutes. But Stephen Baxter, on his first return to Seaview as a manager since leaving the Hatchetmen's hot seat, inspired the visitors to an incredible comeback as a brace apiece from Jack Scott and Danny Gibson either side of the break secured them was was an unlikely victory a one point. The old saying about London buses was on everyone's minds at Mourneview Park on Saturday. With only three goals in his previous 87 appearances Donal Rocks probably wasn't expected to be Ballymena United's two-goal hero against Glenavon. But the tough-tackling midfielder showed his quality with a brace against the Lurgan Blues, including a stunning long-range effort that had his manager stunned afterwards. "When he hit the shot I was ready to scream at him, but then I started celebrating," said Jim Ervin. Ahead of the new season Bangor boss Lee Feeney insisted his side weren't going to throw away their chance in the Irish Premiership as they returned to the topflight for the first time since 2009. Their home form is going to be crucial and if Sunday's win over Cliftonville is anything to go by not too many sides will fancy a trip to the Seaside. Just like they did in the Irish Cup last season Feeney's men took the game to the Reds picking up a very valuable three points as they kicked off the new campaign in style. While the likes of Coleraine, Glentoran and Larne have been mentioned as potential champions in some circles Linfield showed why they shouldn't be written off. The Blues swept aside Dungannon Swifts at Windsor Park with Kieran Offord bagging himself an opening day hat-trick. His goals will be crucial for David Healy's men this season if they are to mount a successful title defence. It was hardly a surprise to see Joel Cooper pop up with the winning goal for Coleraine on Sunday. Last season's Player of the Year was signed by the Bannsiders to be the difference maker and he proved his worth on his home debut against Larne. Ruaidhri Higgins' men looked like they may have to settle for a point in the opener until Cooper's telling intervention with four minutes to go as he produced a typically clinical finish to secure all three first of many no doubt!

Jim Magilton highlights transfer window frustrations but welcomes new eyes on Irish League
Jim Magilton is hoping there is still business to be done for Cliftonville after a challenging transfer window so far. The Reds have had to deal with players moving on, European football, the final stages of the club takeover and player demands "going through the roof". And while Magilton has been pleased with the deals the club have completed so far he admitted it has not been without its challenges this summer, and that's despite bringing a second trophy in as many years back to Solitude. READ MORE: Are you the most generous in your group? Find out your social spending persona READ MORE: Rory McIlroy's true character shines through as PGA Tour star drops telling comment "The last two years have helped us in terms of competitiveness," said Magilton. "We won an Irish Cup and finished third, we won a League Cup and lost an Irish Cup and won a play-off. "And whilst players do their due diligence and they see all of that, you still have to meet their financial needs. "That's difficult because at the moment we're still where we are. There's still a lot of talk about the takeover. It is in the last throes of completion, it's all with the solicitors and everything else. "We'd like that to happen sooner rather than later, but we're on Cliftonville time and Cliftonville time is slightly different. "Again we have to cut our cloth accordingly financially and make sure that we get the right people in and do our due diligence around who we bring, which is important. "Between Gerard Little and myself, we probably receive 30 calls a day. And that started from the Sunday after the play-off game. "And you go through that list and continue to go through the list until you narrow your list down. And then can you meet the financial needs, which have gone through the roof, they really have. "But that means that there's more attention brought to the league, and anything that can profile the league and enhance the reputation of the league is great "Unfortunately we couldn't get through round one in Europe, and that would have been the first time the four clubs got into round two. "So, we let them down. But anything that can bring attention and, you know, that sort of focus is only a good thing. "I saw David Jeffrey talking about the influx of players into the league. Well, as long as they've got the necessary quality, no doubt they have, then, again, that enhances the reputation too. "The problem we had when we came back is that everyone's away on holiday. So, the English and Scottish clubs are enjoying it. But we're, you know, back in for pre-season on 16th June, and we're back focused on the European games. "Our conversations with clubs don't really gather momentum until now when, obviously, they're taking stock of who's there and who's not and who's available and who's not. "So, unless we have nailed on certainties and the ones that we did get in, we got in pretty quickly, which is good, but it's slower than I would love, but it is what it is."
