Algeria, Egypt and Morocco on track for 2026 World Cup
Algeria, Egypt and Morocco all strengthened their bids to reach the 2026 Fifa World Cup but Sudan's unlikely challenge for a place at the finals suffered a setback as the sixth round of qualifying was completed on Tuesday.Sudan, forced to play all their home games on neutral turf while civil war continues in the country, conceded a 98th-minute equaliser against South Sudan and slipped to third in Group B.DR Congo lead the table after their 2-0 win in Mauritania, with the Leopards a point ahead of Senegal and the Sudanese.Egypt restored their five-point advantage at the head of Group A with a 1-0 win against Sierra Leone while Algeria moved three points clear in Group G as Mohamed Amoura bagged a hat-trick in their 5-1 triumph over closest challengers Mozambique.Morocco have a commanding nine-point cushion after beating Tanzania 2-0 - but the standings in Group E may be affected if Congo-Brazzaville's suspension from international football is not lifted.Only the nine group winners will qualify for the expanded 48-team tournament next year, with the four best second-placed sides playing off for a spot at an intercontinental tournament which will decide the final spots at the World Cup.Nigeria are in danger of missing out on a ticket to the United States, Mexico and Canada after drawing 1-1 at home against Zimbabwe, leaving the Super Eagles six points adrift of Group C leaders South Africa. The final four rounds of group fixtures will be spread across September and October, with African play-offs scheduled for November.
Elsewhere amid 15 qualifiers on Tuesday, Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo scored one and set up another as Cameroon beat Libya 3-1 to remain a point behind Cape Verde in Group D.And Comoros cut Ghana's lead to three points in Group I following a 1-0 home win over Chad in neutral Berkane.
Senegal remain in hunt after Sudan draw
Sudan upset the odds to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, but their dreams of reaching the World Cup are fading despite remaining unbeaten in Group B.The Falcons of Jediane were frustrated by neighbours South Sudan in Benina, Libya, until Mohamed Eisa stabbed home from close range in the 76th minute.Sudan were seconds away from victory when David Omot Sebit levelled with an acrobatic volley after substitute goalkeeper Ali Abu Eshrein failed to gather a high ball into the box under pressure. That allowed DR Congo to seize top spot after goals from Charles Pickel and Fiston Mayele secured three points in Mauritania.Senegal then moved above Sudan on goal difference after seeing out a 2-0 win over Togo.Tottenham midfielder Pape Matar Sarr steered in to open the scoring in Diamniadio 10 minutes before the break and Moussa Niakhate doubled the lead midway through the second half.Morocco remain the only side in African preliminaries with a perfect record but the Atlas Lions had to wait until the second half to find the breakthrough against Tanzania in their Group E clash in Oujda.Former West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd put the hosts in front from close range in the 51st minute and Real Madrid forward Brahim Diaz made it 2-0 from the penalty spot seven minutes later after Ibrahim Bacca was penalised for handball.
Aboubakar nets twice for Indomitable Lions
The pressure had been on the Cameroon before kick-off against Libya after two goals from Dilon Livramento gave Cape Verde a 2-1 win in Angola earlier on Tuesday and established a four-point lead for the Blue Sharks in Group D.But the Indomitable Lions took the lead in the first half through Vincent Aboubakar's penalty and Mbeumo slotted home eight minutes into the second period to double the lead.Aboubakar converted Mbeumo's pull-back to make it 3-0 just after the hour mark and Cameroon saw out victory despite the Mediterranean Knights pulling a goal back in injury time.Cape Verde sit top on 13 points, with Cameroon on 12, Libya on 8 and Angola on 7.Meanwhile, Egypt struggled to break down Sierra Leone for long periods of their Group A meeting in Cairo.Zizo netted what proved to be the only goal in first-half stoppage time with a fine left-footed finish after being slipped in by Trezeguet.Mohamed Salah is the top scorer in African preliminaries with six goals and the Liverpool forward could have added to that tally in the second half but dragged an effort wide of the right-hand post.
Algeria cruise to victory
Mohamed Amoura had netted twice in Algeria's victory in Botswana on Friday and the Wolfsburg forward bettered that feat against Mozambique in Tizi Ouzou. He converted deft through balls from Riyad Mahrez either side of Aissa Mandi's header to help the North Africans into a 3-0 lead inside half an hour.Geny Catamo pulled one back before half-time but Amoura crossed for Jaouen Hadjam to head home before completing his treble with 10 minutes remaining.Algeria are on 15 points, three ahead of Mozambique and six points above Botswana and Uganda.Botswana saw off Somalia 2-0 in Francistown while Allan Okello's stunning first-half free-kick was enough to secure Uganda a home win over Guinea.
Tuesday's African World Cup qualifying results
Egypt 1-0 Sierra Leone (Group A)Sudan 1-1 South Sudan (Group B)Mauritania 0-2 DR Congo (Group B)Senegal 2-0 Togo (Group B)Benin 0-2 South Africa (Group C)Nigeria 1-1 Zimbabwe (Group C)Rwanda 1-1 Lesotho (Group C)Angola 1-2 Cape Verde (Group D)Cameroon 3-1 Libya (Group D)Morocco 2-0 Tanzania (Group E)Burundi 5-0 Seychelles (Group F)Botswana 2-0 Somalia (Group G)Uganda 1-0 Guinea (Group G)Algeria 5-1 Mozambique (Group G)Comoros 1-0 Chad (Group I)

Man Utd target Bryan Mbeumo makes Thomas Frank claim amid Spurs transfer battle
Manchester United target Bryan Mbeumo is also wanted by Tottenham now that Thomas Frank is in charge and the Cameroon star feels his ex-Brentford boss will thrive at his new club Bryan Mbeumo has tipped Thomas Frank to be a huge hit at Tottenham during an impromptu interview at the Canadian Grand Prix - but he did not discuss the battle for his signature between Spurs and Manchester United. The Cameroon star, 25, is wanted by both clubs with a summer exit from Brentford now likely. It's understood that United is Mbeumo's preferred destination with the Red Devils in desperate need of reinforcements after enduring their worst ever Premier League campaign. They have so far failed to meet Brentford's valuation of the player and the situation has been complicated by Frank's move to Spurs. Mirror Football revealed prior to the weekend that they have launched a £70million bid to try and make Mbeumo their marquee summer signing by gazumping their rivals. And while Mbeumo did not discuss interest from the two clubs in Montreal, he did endorse Frank to do a stellar job at his new club. "He's done so much for me," Mbeumo told Sky Sports when he was asked how influential Frank has been during his career. "He literally trusted me from the start [at Brentford] and he developed the team so well. He developed me as a human and a player so much as well. I can only wish him all the best and I'm sure he's going to do well." He added: "He knows everything; he's really smart and knows what he wants to bring the team, how he wants them to play. He's been fantastic for Brentford." Mbeumo is hot property after breaking the 20-goal barrier in the Premier League for the first time last season, helping Brentford to a 10th place finish. Crucially, the Bees are not expected to prevent their star man after his stellar campaign, though it remains unclear where he will end up with the summer transfer window set to reopen on Monday. The versatile forward feels he is currently at the peak of his powers, adding: "I think it's been my best season so far in the Premier League. Even collectively, I think we played very good and were unlucky [to not get] a European spot." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. New Spurs boss Thomas Frank in bold bid to sign two of his Brentford favourites
It's all change at Brentford with manager Thomas Frank and key elements of his back room staff moving to Tottenham – now two crucial members of their team could be making the same journey. Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa have been linked with a double transfer deal in the summer market, which could reopen with an unexpected Spurs splurge of around £120million. They scored 39 Premier League goals between them last season with Cameroon striker Mbeumo hitting 20 and DR Congo forward Wissa 19 and if their incredible partnership remains intact alongside a strikeforce which includes England international Dominic Solanke, and which is supplied by James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Brennan Johnson and Lucas Bergvall, it would make the Europa League winners serious contenders for a top-four finish next season. It would also give Frank added firepower to deal with the demands of his first taste of Champions League football but it may mean losing the services of club legend Son Heung-min, who may consider the time right to ply his trade elsewhere after finally winning silverware with Spurs. Richarlison could return to Everton to help fund the moves while Cristian Romero, seemingly unhappy Ange Postecoglou was sacked, would also bring in a pretty fee if he is allowed to leave. Manchester United have been strongly linked with a move for Mbeumo but their defeat to Tottenham means they cannot offer Champions League football next season. They may be able to offer higher wages but the chance to play in Europe's elite club competition, continue a seamless partnership with Wissa and remain under Frank's tutelage may be too much to turn down for the Bees star. Brentford may not be happy about becoming Tottenham's feeder club but they run a tight ship and a £120million cash injection would be difficult to snub as they seek to rebuild while maintaining their Premier League status. United have captured Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m but have their work cut out to land Sweden striker Viktor Gyokeres – despite former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim being in charge – and although they are 4/6 with Ladbrokes and Coral to win the race for Mbeumo, they are reported to be drawing up alternative arrangements, including Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace and Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth. Spurs are 7/4 with bet365 to sign Mbeumo and 4/1 with Coral and Ladbrokes to capture Wissa while Romero is 4/6 with bet365 to stay in N17 and 2/1 with the same firm to realise his dream of playing in La Liga by joining Atletico Madrid. Chelsea return to action from the shortest of summer breaks when they begin their quest to win the Fifa Club World Cup with a Monday night group match against LAFC. Seeking to build on a strong finish to the Premier League campaign which saw them punch their ticket to the Champions League, Enzo Maresca's men are 17/20 with William Hill to win by more than one goal in the handicap market. New signing Liam Delap is 27/20 to score at any time in his first appearance in a Chelsea shirt. French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz switches from clay to grass when he defends his title at Queen's and is 20/21 to match last year's success. More Trending Big things are expected of British No.1 Jack Draper this summer, however, and as he's in the opposite half of the draw to Alcaraz follow him each-way at 9/2 with bet365 who will pay half the odds just for reaching the decider. Draper should also be backed at 11/8 with SpreadEx and Sporting Index to win his opening match in west London against American Jenson Brooksby by over 5.5 games. Just over two lengths covered all six runners in a dramatic Greyhound Derby final at Towcester on Saturday when Patrick Janssen's Droopys Plunge produced a rattling finish to blaze past Irish Derby champion Bockos Diamond and 2024 winner De Lahdedah in the closing strides and win at 10/1. Watch out, though, for June '23 puppy Sole Mio, who was fifth despite an unfavourable draw. Pat Cronin's young gun is huge each-way value at 33/1 with sponsors BoyleSports for the Irish Derby at Shelbourne Park in Dublin which starts in August. Former Premier League star and ex-Sky Sports pundit 'in advanced talks to replace Thomas Frank at Brentford'
Brentford are reportedly in advanced talks with with a member of their coaching staff to replace Thomas Frank as manager. Frank has been confirmed as Tottenham 's new head coach on a three-year contract. He moves across London after nine years at Brentford to succeed Ange Postecoglou, sacked earlier this month, 16 days after his team won the Europa League. The departure of Frank has left the Bees searching for a new boss and it looks as if that person could come from within. Keith Andrews is the man they have their eye on following his work as a set-piece coach, according to The Independent. Andrew is a well respected figure behind the scenes at Brentford and the report adds that he is already looking for backroom staff. The 44-year-old is a former Premier League player, playing for the likes of Wolves, Brighton, Bolton and Blackburn during his career. He also shone as a pundit for Sky Sports on EFL Games before joining Frank's team. The appointment of Andrews would see the continuation of a familiar pattern of promoting from within with Frank succeeding Dean Smith after his role as his assistant. Ex-Brentford first-team assistant coach Justin Cochrane believed to be leading the running for the job to replace Frank, but he has now followed the Dane to Spurs. Brentford hailed the appointment of Andrews last summer in the specialist role, with director of football Phil Giles stating at the time: 'Whilst he has had more wide-ranging coaching roles in the past, focusing on set-pieces as a specialism is something which we think he has the qualities to do extremely well. 'I'm sure that our staff can help him develop as a coach, too. Set-pieces are an important part of what we do well and I'm sure we'll maintain those standards with Keith in charge.'
