Algeria, Egypt and Morocco on track for 2026 World Cup
Elsewhere amid 15 qualifiers on Tuesday, Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo scored one and set up another as Cameroon beat Libya 3-1 to remain a point behind Cape Verde in Group D.And Comoros cut Ghana's lead to three points in Group I following a 1-0 home win over Chad in neutral Berkane.
Senegal remain in hunt after Sudan draw
Sudan upset the odds to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, but their dreams of reaching the World Cup are fading despite remaining unbeaten in Group B.The Falcons of Jediane were frustrated by neighbours South Sudan in Benina, Libya, until Mohamed Eisa stabbed home from close range in the 76th minute.Sudan were seconds away from victory when David Omot Sebit levelled with an acrobatic volley after substitute goalkeeper Ali Abu Eshrein failed to gather a high ball into the box under pressure. That allowed DR Congo to seize top spot after goals from Charles Pickel and Fiston Mayele secured three points in Mauritania.Senegal then moved above Sudan on goal difference after seeing out a 2-0 win over Togo.Tottenham midfielder Pape Matar Sarr steered in to open the scoring in Diamniadio 10 minutes before the break and Moussa Niakhate doubled the lead midway through the second half.Morocco remain the only side in African preliminaries with a perfect record but the Atlas Lions had to wait until the second half to find the breakthrough against Tanzania in their Group E clash in Oujda.Former West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd put the hosts in front from close range in the 51st minute and Real Madrid forward Brahim Diaz made it 2-0 from the penalty spot seven minutes later after Ibrahim Bacca was penalised for handball.
Aboubakar nets twice for Indomitable Lions
The pressure had been on the Cameroon before kick-off against Libya after two goals from Dilon Livramento gave Cape Verde a 2-1 win in Angola earlier on Tuesday and established a four-point lead for the Blue Sharks in Group D.But the Indomitable Lions took the lead in the first half through Vincent Aboubakar's penalty and Mbeumo slotted home eight minutes into the second period to double the lead.Aboubakar converted Mbeumo's pull-back to make it 3-0 just after the hour mark and Cameroon saw out victory despite the Mediterranean Knights pulling a goal back in injury time.Cape Verde sit top on 13 points, with Cameroon on 12, Libya on 8 and Angola on 7.Meanwhile, Egypt struggled to break down Sierra Leone for long periods of their Group A meeting in Cairo.Zizo netted what proved to be the only goal in first-half stoppage time with a fine left-footed finish after being slipped in by Trezeguet.Mohamed Salah is the top scorer in African preliminaries with six goals and the Liverpool forward could have added to that tally in the second half but dragged an effort wide of the right-hand post.
Algeria cruise to victory
Mohamed Amoura had netted twice in Algeria's victory in Botswana on Friday and the Wolfsburg forward bettered that feat against Mozambique in Tizi Ouzou. He converted deft through balls from Riyad Mahrez either side of Aissa Mandi's header to help the North Africans into a 3-0 lead inside half an hour.Geny Catamo pulled one back before half-time but Amoura crossed for Jaouen Hadjam to head home before completing his treble with 10 minutes remaining.Algeria are on 15 points, three ahead of Mozambique and six points above Botswana and Uganda.Botswana saw off Somalia 2-0 in Francistown while Allan Okello's stunning first-half free-kick was enough to secure Uganda a home win over Guinea.

Ruben Amorim offers Man Utd flop in £120m deal to sign Carlos Baleba
Manchester United are willing to offer a member of Ruben Amorim's 'bomb squad' in a stunning £120m deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. Cameroon international Baleba is believed to be United's top transfer target for the midfield position. The 21-year-old has enjoyed two impressive seasons at Brighton since his £23m move from Ligue 1 side Lille in 2023. Baleba made just 21 league appearances for Lille but has quickly developed into one of the most highly-rated midfielders in the Premier League and a top target for Manchester United. United have spent almost £200m on attacking players this summer, bringing Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha to Old Trafford. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. But Ruben Amorim is well aware of the holes that were in his midfield last season and ideally would have liked to see a new midfielder arrive through the doors. Baleba ticks a lot of boxes for Manchester United and, according to The Independent, has indicated he is 'highly keen' for a move to Old Trafford. But Brighton have insisted they want to keep Baleba at the club for at least one more season and if they do sale, will expect to receive at least £100m. Despite Brighton potentially demanding up to £120m, The Independent say Manchester United are 'actively' trying to complete a deal. Baleba is Ineos' top midfield target and Old Trafford bosses are trying to find creative solutions to meet Brighton's steep demands. One option, it has been claimed, is to use Jadon Sancho as bait in the deal, although Brighton are not believed to be interested in the United winger. Sancho has held talks with a number of Serie A clubs this summer after being placed in Amorim's bomb squad along with Alejandro Garnacho and Antony. Brighton will demand a transfer record for an African player to sell Baleba, with Nicolas Pepe currently holding that accolade following his £72m move to Arsenal in 2019. The Seagulls are in a strong negotiating position as Baleba still has three more years left on his current contract, with Brighton also having an option to extend by 12 months. Significant player sales could alter Manchester United's stance as they are awaiting a first bid from Chelsea for Argentinian winger Garnacho. Sancho and Antony have also been put up for sale, while United are open to offers for Rasmus Hojlund following Benjamin Sesko's £74m move from RB Leipzig. Speaking at a fans' forum last week, Brighton chief executive Paul Barber admitted Baleba could leave but denied any contact with Manchester United. 'Carlos is a fantastic talent,' he said. 'We hope he'll be here for years to come – but it's subject to the dynamics of the football world, which isn't always predictable.' Baleba has been linked with Manchester City as well as Manchester United but Wes Brown believes he should push for a move to Old Trafford. More Trending 'Man United have a big heritage and a big history,' he said. 'You can see with the signings we've made that we're tyring to get back to winning ways. 'He's done really well. He's a player who has probably been under the radar a little bit. He's quick, sharp, he has a brilliant left foot, he gets in your face and he can tackle. 'I think he's the sort of player the manager is looking for in midfield. He's be very exciting. He'd put a stamp on the midfield along with Bruno Fernandes. He'd be a really positive buy.' A number of Manchester United players have reportedly contacted Baleba in a bid to convince him to push for a move to the club. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Revealed: Why Arsenal legend 'rejected return to the club' as part of Mikel Arteta's staff
Arsenal 's search for a new Under 21 head coach has hit a stumbling block after a leading candidate has reportedly decided not to take up the role. The vacancy arose following Mehmet Ali's departure to Brentford earlier this summer. Ali guided the Gunners to an eighth-place finish in Premier League 2 last season. He joined Brentford to work as a first-team assistant manager under new boss Keith Andrews. Arsenal's hierarchy had been keen to swiftly replace him, with one of the names on the shortlist being a figure who remains hugely popular among the Emirates faithful. However, club icon Jack Wilshere has opted against a reunion with his boyhood club, according to BBC Sport. The 32-year-old reportedly held discussions with Arsenal officials after being approached about the post. However, after careful consideration, he amicably informed the club that he was not interested. Wilshere's reasoning was purely career-based; he is determined to take his first steps into senior management and is prioritising opportunities that will place him directly in a first-team coaching environment. Wilshere, who made more than 150 starts for Arsenal after coming through the academy, left the Emirates Stadium last season to join Norwich City's coaching staff under then-manager Johannes Thorup. At Carrow Road, he was initially appointed first-team coach before being promoted to interim head coach following Thorup's departure in April. He oversaw the final stretch of the Championship season before leaving when Liam Manning was appointed permanent boss. Since retiring in 2022, Wilshere has been fast-tracking his coaching career, earning his Pro Licence and quickly gaining experience both at academy level and in senior football.
