Report: FAMU hiring Charlie Ward as men's hoops coach
Ward, 54, played football and basketball at Florida State from 1990-94, winning a national championship and the Heisman as the Seminoles quarterback in 1993 before playing 11 seasons in the NBA from 1994-2005.
Ward has been coaching in the high school ranks since 2007, most recently with Florida State University Schools in Tallahassee since 2018.
Florida A&M, located in Tallahassee, finished 14-17 in 2024-25 in its first season under coach Patrick Crarey II, who left to take the coaching position at Grambling State. The Rattlers, members of the SWAC, have not been to the NCAA Tournament since 2007.
A first-round pick by New York in 1994, Ward averaged 6.3 points and 4.0 assists in 630 career NBA games with the Knicks (1994-2004), San Antonio Spurs (2004) and the Houston Rockets (2004-05).
Ward swept most of the major college football honors in 1993, winning the Maxwell, Walter Camp, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm, Davey O'Brien and James E. Sullivan awards in addition to the Heisman. Florida State retired his No. 17 football jersey.
On the basketball court, Ward played in 91 games for the Seminoles and averaged 8.1 points, 4.4 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game.

Oklahoma QB John Mateer named to Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list
The buzz surrounding the Oklahoma Sooners' new starting quarterback, John Mateer. He's been included on a number of watch lists this offseason and is a dark horse candidate to contend for the Heisman Trophy. On Wednesday, Mateer was included on another watch list, this time for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award. The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award goes to the offensive player of the year who played his high school or college football in the state of Texas or was born in Texas. Oklahoma Sooners quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray won the awards in back-to-back seasons during their Heisman runs in 2017 and 2018. The two were standout quarterbacks in Texas high school football and started their careers at universities in the state of Texas before transferring to Oklahoma. Mateer could be on a similar path with the Sooners in 2025. Though there are more unknowns on the offensive side of the ball than there were when OU entered the 2017 or 2018 seasons, Mateer could very well be the answer to a lot of the questions with his dual-threat ability. The former three-star quarterback has been lauded for his ability to make plays when things break down and for his competitive drive. And if he's able to translate that to Oklahoma and the SEC, Mateer could end the season in the running for a number of postseason awards. Titans QB Cam Ward all jokes after dust-up with Jeffery Simmons
It took all of two days for the fallout from the Tennessee Titans' Monday practice scuffle to blow over. Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward was all jokes when speaking to reporters Wednesday about his incident with defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons at practice on Monday. "Did I learn anything from it? Jeff's strong as (expletive)," Ward said. "I think it was what we needed though. We love competing, especially me and Jeff. "I'm excited to have that man as my teammate. I can't wait to see what he do on Sundays – I already know what he about, but I get to see the real thing coming soon." CAM WARD: Titans' QB on practice scuffle with Jeffery Simmons: 'I think it was what we needed' The "conflict" – if it can be called that anymore – started Monday when Ward threw a touchdown pass near the end of practice before hitting his signature, "Zombieland" celebration in Simmons' face. He shoved Simmons, Simmons shoved back, and the offensive line rushed to Ward's defense. Nick Suss of the Tennesseean (part of the USA TODAY Network) reported that the scrum lasted "about 15-20 seconds. Then play resumed." "That's me and Jeff's relationship," Ward said Wednesday. "I wake up, I get here, he damn near the first one I'm ready to talk (expletive) to." And Ward fully expects Simmons to give that smack-talk back, saying the defensive tackle is one of the first to do so every day at practice. Bears QB Tyson Bagent emotional over 'gift I've been blessed with'
The Chicago Bears became one of the few franchises in the NFL to extend their backup quarterback when they agreed to a two-year, $10 million deal with Tyson Bagent. The 25-year-old quarterback started four games for the Bears in 2023 and appeared in four games last season. Bagent was set to enter the final year of his contract this season and this extension will keep him with the Bears through 2027. The former Shepherd University star was emotional talking about what it meant to sign this deal. "A lot of people don't know this but my dad, he is my right hand man and he didn't have running water until he was in high school," Bagent told media after signing his deal. "So there's definitely a lot of things and people that I think I could certainly help with this gift I've been blessed with. "Little things like that, I don't really know anybody back home with any money. It feels good, it's certainly a weight off my shoulders and my family's shoulders. It definitely means a lot." The West Virginia native earned the Harlon Hill Trophy, Division II college football's equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, in 2021 at Shepherd. He set Division II records for career passing yards with 17,034 and touchdown passes with 159. He's played well in the preseason for the Bears this year, especially in Chicago's win over Buffalo. Bagent completed 13 of 22 passes for 196 yards and touchdown. This deal makes him the seventh-highest paid backup quarterback by average annual value (AAV) in the NFL. Only Anthony Richardson Sr., Marcus Mariota, Jacoby Brissett, Zach Wilson, Jarrett Stidham, and Tyrod Taylor rank ahead of him. Bagent will likely be back in action for the Bears' preseason finale on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday, Aug. 22.
