China: Jaishankar discusses SCO's role, modernisation efforts with Secy Gen Yermekbayev

Jaishankar arrived in China after concluding his visit to Singapore, his first trip to Beijing in five years. During his visit, Jaishankar will attend the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers' Meeting (CFM) in Tianjin and also bilateral meetings on the sidelines.
The 25th Heads of State Council meeting of the SCO will be held in Tianjin later this year. India had chaired the SCO Presidency in 2023 while Pakistan hosted the SCO Leaders' Summit in 2024.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is a permanent intergovernmental international organisation whose members include India, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Belarus.
Jaishankar's visit comes after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval travelled to China in June for the SCO meetings.
Earlier this June, India refused to sign a joint statement at the SCO Defence Ministers' meeting after it did not include any mention of the terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 people. India had pushed for strong references to terrorism, but one country -- believed to be Pakistan -- disagreed.

New Delhi: Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Saturday spoke to Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and congratulated him on the signing of the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace accord, reached on Friday (local time) in Washington DC, US. He further said, "This is an important achievement for dialogue and diplomacy that India advocates." The peace agreement, brokered by the United States, ends decades of conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave. The deal was hailed by US President Donald Trump as a major diplomatic breakthrough that would boost regional stability and open opportunities for trade and investment. At the signing ceremony, Trump said, "It's a long time. Thirty-five years they fought and now they're friends and they're going to be friends for a long time." He explained that the new transit route would give Azerbaijan full access to the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh while respecting Armenia's sovereignty. The US will develop the corridor for "up to 99 years." "They're going to be able to really live and work together," Trump added. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev assured that there would be no reversal of the deal. "There should be no doubt and no suspicion that any of the sides would step back. If any of us, Prime Minister Pashinyan or myself, had in mind to step back, we wouldn't have come here. So you can be absolutely sure, as well as the Azerbaijani community, that what has happened today will result in peace, long-lasting peace, eternal peace in the Caucasus," Trump added. Speaking alongside the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Trump described his "highest aspiration" as bringing "peace and stability to the world." He added, "Today's signing follows our success with India and Pakistan. They were going at it. They were going at it big. And they were great leaders that came together just prior to what would have been a tremendous conflict, as you know, a nuclear conflict probably."

China opposes "abuse of tariffs" by US against India
Beijing: China voiced its opposition to the US announcement of tariffs against India. The Spokesperson of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Guo Jiakun, in his press briefing while responding to media queries called the act an 'abuse of tariffs'. When asked on comments on Trump's executive order to place an additional 25 percent tariff on India for its purchases of Russian oil, he said, "China's opposition to the abuse of tariffs is consistent and clear." "China opposes the US politicizing tech and trade issues and using them as weapons to maliciously blockade and go after China. The US should earnestly protect the legitimate and lawful rights and interests of Chinese nationals," he added. Trump's order drew criticism from within the country as House Foreign Affairs Committee Dems warned that Trump's actions risk the carefully developed US-India relationship. In a post on X, House Foreign Affairs Committee Dems said, "RM Gregory Meeks: Trump's latest tariff tantrum risks years of careful work to build a stronger US-India partnership. We have deep strategic, economic, and people-to-people ties. Concerns should be addressed in a mutually respectful way consistent with our democratic values." Earlier in the day, Trump said there will be no trade negotiations with India until a dispute over tariffs is resolved, following his administration's decision to double tariffs on Indian imports. When pressed by ANI at the Oval Office, whether he expected talks to resume in light of the new 50% tariff. "No, not until we get it resolved," he replied. The White House on Wednesday issued an Executive Order imposing an additional 25 percentage points in tariffs on Indian goods, raising the total levy to 50%. The administration cited national security and foreign policy concerns, pointing specifically to India's ongoing imports of Russian oil. The order claims that these imports, whether direct or via intermediaries, present an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to the United States and justify emergency economic measures. According to US officials, the initial 25% tariff came into effect on 7 August. The additional levy will take effect in 21 days and apply to all Indian goods entering US ports -- with exceptions for items already in transit and certain exempt categories.

India "carefully monitoring" China's mega hydropower project on River Brahmaputra: Indian Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh
New Delhi: The Indian government has taken note of reports about China's commencement of construction on a massive hydropower project on the Brahmaputra River, in Tibet. The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that they were carefully monitoring China's hydropower project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo (upper reaches of the Brahmaputra) River in Tibet. This project, first made public in 1986, has been a subject of concern for India due to its potential impact on the country's interests and the livelihoods of local tribes. Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, said that the government carefully monitors all developments related to the Brahmaputra River and takes necessary measures to protect its interests. The government has consistently conveyed its views and concerns to the Chinese authorities, emphasising the need for transparency and consultation with downstream countries. "The Government of India has taken note of reports about the commencement of construction of the mega dam project by China on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo (upper reaches of the Brahmaputra) River in Tibet. This project was first made public as far back as 1986 and since then, preparations have been underway in China," the MEA stated in response to an unstarred question in the Rajya Sabha. The MEA said that the government remained committed to safeguarding Indian interests in the region. "Government carefully monitors all developments relating to the Brahmaputra river, including plans by China to develop hydropower projects, and takes necessary measures to protect our interests, including preventive and corrective measures to safeguard life and livelihood of Indian citizens residing in downstream areas," the statement said. India has discussed various issues related to transboundary rivers with China under an institutionalised Expert Level Mechanism established in 2006. The government has also urged China to ensure that any activities in upstream areas do not harm the interests of downstream states. "Various issues relating to trans-border rivers are discussed with China under the ambit of an institutionalised Expert Level Mechanism which was established in 2006, as well as through diplomatic channels. As a lower riparian state with considerable established user rights to the waters of the trans-border rivers, Government has consistently conveyed its views and concerns to the Chinese authorities, including on the need for transparency and consultation with downstream countries and has urged them to ensure that the interests of downstream states are not harmed by any activities in upstream areas," he said. Singh said that the government noted the need for cooperation on the trans-border issue and has conveyed it to China. "The need for cooperation on trans-border rivers, including resumption of provision of hydrological data by the Chinese side has been highlighted by the Government in several bilateral interactions with China including during the recent visit of EAM to China from 14-16 July 2025 for the SCO Foreign Ministers' Meeting," he said. During the recent visit of External Affairs Minister to China for the SCO Foreign Ministers' Meeting, the need for cooperation on trans-border rivers, including the resumption of hydrological data provision by the Chinese side, was highlighted. The Indian government remains vigilant and proactive in protecting its interests and ensuring the well-being of its citizens.
