Reservoir Dogs star Michael Madsen dies aged 67

Telegraph17 hours ago
Michael Madsen, the US actor known for his roles in Quentin Tarantino 's Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill, has died at the age of 67.
Madsen was found unresponsive in his home in Malibu, California, on Thursday morning after dying from natural causes, according to authorities.
Ron Smith, one of his managers, said Madsen had died of a cardiac arrest.
'In the past two years, Michael Madsen has been doing some incredible work with independent film including upcoming feature films Resurrection Road, Concessions and Cookbook for Southern Housewives and was really looking forward to this next chapter in his life,' his managers Smith and Susan Ferris, and publicist Liz Rodriguez, said.
They added that he 'was one of Hollywood's most iconic actors, who will be missed by many'.
Madsen was married three times and had seven children. His sister is the Oscar-nominated actor Virginia Madsen.
Madsen was a prolific actor featuring in more than 300 films stretching back to the early 1980s.
Born in Chicago in 1957, he got his start working at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre, which led to small early roles in 1980s films such as WarGames and The Natural.
His global breakthrough came with 1992's Reservoir Dogs, in which he played the sadistic, ear-cutting Mr Blonde, who tortures a captured policeman.
Mr Blonde was one of the 400 nominees for the American Film Institute's list of the all-time greatest movie villains.
Madsen would go on to win acclaim for his wise-cracking tough guy roles and became a Tarantino regular, appearing in the Kill Bill films and the director's later works The Hateful Eight (2015) and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019).
He was originally tipped to play John Travolta's role in Tarantino's 1994 cult classic Pulp Fiction, but dropped out to appear in Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp instead – a choice he later said he came to regret.
Other notable roles included Thelma and Louise (1991), Free Willy (1993), Die Another Day (2002) and Sin City (2005).
Speaking to The Guardian in 2004, Madsen complained of the 'patchiness' of his career, which he attributed to having come too late for the parts he wanted to play.
'Maybe I was just born in the wrong era,' he said. 'I'm a bit of a throwback to the days of black-and-white movies. Those guys back then, they had a certain kind of directness about them. A lot of the screenplays, the plots were very simplistic – they gave rise to a type of anti-hero that maybe I suit better.'
In 2012, Madsen appeared in Celebrity Big Brother and in 2013 launched his own brand American Bad Ass chilli sauce.

Michael Madsen obituary: Tarantino favourite with a tender side

Actors are meant to be convincing in whatever role they play — but Michael Madsen feared he overdid it as Mr Blonde, gleefully torturing an undercover cop tied to a chair in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs while dancing to Stealers Wheel's 1970s hit Stuck In The Middle with You. For good measure, he then sliced off the policeman's ear with a menacing, shark-like grin. 'I think I've been more believable than I should have been,' he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018. 'I think people really fear me. They see me and go: 'Holy shit, there's that guy!'' Madsen did not play only psychopaths and sadists, and the film he made straight after Reservoir Dogs was Free Willy in which he played Glen Greenwood, the tender-hearted foster father of the 12-year-old orphaned boy who befriends a captive orca in a theme park. 'The oddest thing is when children recognise me from Free Willy and their parents recognise me from Reservoir Dogs,' he noted. 'The kids are like, 'There's Glen!' and the parents are like, 'Don't go near that guy!''

Inside Taylor Swift's WILDEST 4th of July parties from drunken karaoke to THAT mortifying Tom Hiddleston shirt

Perched above the windswept Rhode Island coast, Taylor Swift 's $17 million Watch Hill mansion played host to the most iconic Fourth of July weekends of the summer. From 2013 to 2016, the 14-time Grammy winner turned her New England home into a star-studded summer escape, complete with American flag bikinis, oversized floats, fireworks and famous friends. Over the years, the guest list ranged from A-listers like Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, Blake Lively and Cara Delevingne to her own childhood pals like Abigail Anderson and Brittany Maack. The parties, affectionately dubbed Taymerica by fans, weren't just celebrations of Independence Day, they became a celebration of Swift's closest friendships and her love of making memories. In honor of her favorite holiday, is revisiting all of Swift's red, white, and wildly iconic Fourth of July parties. This includes all the squad photos, drunken karaoke and, of course, her ex-boyfriend Tom Hiddleston 's legendary 'I ❤️ T.S.' tank top. It is unknown how she'll celebrate this year, it is safe to assume she'll be spending the day with her boyfriend, Travis Kelce. 2013: Miss Americana Back in her Red era, Taylor's first Watch Hill celebration felt more like a cozy and casual get-together. Still, there were barefoot group hugs on the lawn and sparklers illuminating the beach as guests took in fireworks exploding over the ocean. Her guests were mostly family, a few close friends and her backup dancers. At this point, there was no press, no aerial shots and no matching rompers, just lots of face paint and patriotism. It was the calm before the storm. And, in hindsight, a warm-up for her most epic parties to come. 2014: The start of an age At this point in her career, Swift's 1989 era was still brewing and so was the concept of her iconic girl gang. What had once been a laidback hang turned into a celebrity fever dream as her bash was attended by stars like Lena Dunham, Jaime King, Emma Stone and Ingrid Michaelson. Activities included swimming, baking and posing for group photos, which were curated like a Vogue spread. Swift even described one party shot as a 'family portrait' on Twitter. 2015: Squad Goals on steroids In 2015, Taylor Swift turned the Fourth of July into a date Swifties looked forward to every year. Those attending the backyard pool party included Ed Sheeran, Gigi Hadid, Joe Jonas, the Haim sisters, Nick Jonas and Martha Hunt. To make it unforgettable, she purchased a multi-story inflatable slide that towered over her lawn and stationed countless floaties in the pool. Gigi and Joe, who were dating at the time, apparently brought some incredible party favours for the guests, providing American flag-decorated onesies for everyone. And, at the center of it all, was Swift, who somehow managed to take photos with every partygoer, grill and cuddle up to her man. In one picture, Ed Sheeran posed proudly in a red military jacket, which resembled one that would be worn in the British army during the American Revolution. 'When Ed shows up in a red coat for the 4th of July because he just can't let it go,' Taylor cheekily captioned her post, at the time. Taylor also shared a heartwarming snap of herself getting a piggyback ride from Calvin. 'Friendly relations between Scotland and America,' she wrote under the since-deleted photo. 2016: The 'I ❤️ T.S.' heard around the world The year of 2016 saw the squad once again take to her $18 million mansion for another Independence Day celebration which lasted five days. She pulled out all the stops to ensure her celebrity guests had a holiday they'll never forget - including a giant red, white, and blue inflatable water slide. Her new beau, Tom Hiddleston, was in attendance, as well as pals Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, Ruby Rose, Uzo Adubo, and Cara Delevingne. Fireworks, karaoke, matching American flag swimsuits, and a performance from Ed Sheeran made for an unforgettable bash that social media was left reeling over. The party also created the iconic moment where Taylor and Tom Hiddleston were photographed frolicking in the surf as he rocked a 'I Heart T.S' tank top. Just in case that was too subtle, he also had his arm branded with a temporary tattoo of a love heart bearing Taylor's initials. The infatuated duo could not seem to keep their hands off each other as they embraced and kissed in the water. 2017-2022: The disappearance After 2016, the parties stopped, due to political reasons, and Taylor refrained from posting on Fourth of July. In August, 2019, she explained she stopped hosting her 'Taymerica' soirées on account of her 'disillusionment' with American politics following Trump's first win. 'The thing I can't get over right now is gaslighting the American public into being like, "If you hate the president, you hate America." We're a democracy – at least, we're supposed to be – where you're allowed to disagree, dissent, debate,' she told The Guardian. The pause lasted, which also coincided with her relationship with Joe Alwyn, which lasted between 2017 and Spring 2023, lasted until 2023. 2023: The return of Taymerica Fortunately for her fans, Taymerica was not shelved indefinitely. In July 2023, a few days after the Fourth, Taylor posted a casual Instagram carousel, featuring her pals, popsicles and a subtle reference to her split from Alwyn. 'Happy belated Independence Day from your local neighborhood independent girlies,' she captioned her post, seemingly alluding to her brief, single relationship status. In attendance at the Rhode Island beach house were members of the singer's girl gang, including bestie Selena Gomez, the Haim sisters, and Sydney Ness, and stylist Ashley Avignone. The group were pictured sprawled across the grass in swimsuits as they celebrated the national holiday. Taylor also shared some Polaroid snaps, which included one of her lovingly hugging Selena, and another of the group dancing around in her kitchen.

The Last of Us fans panic as show creator quits before season 3

The Last Of Us fans have been left panicking that the hit series has been 'ruined' after news spread that its creator has quit before series three has even kicked off. The smash-hit drama, which is named after the highly successful video game, launched in 2023. It follows a group of survivors two decades after a viral fungal infection almost wiped out humanity in its entirety. [MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS] Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey play the lead roles as Joel and Ellie respectively. However, ahead of its third series, the show's creator Neil Druckmann has sensationally quit. The 46-year-old was responsible for the thriller's transition from a video game into a multi-season show. Announcing the shock news on Instagram to stunned fans, Neil said: 'I've made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last Of Us on HBO. 'With work completed on season two and before any meaningful work starts on season three, now is the right time for me to transition my complete focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects.' Reacting to the news, fans flooded social media with comments, as one said: 'Oh god. This will be the final blow to the show.' A second posted: 'The episodes he was the director of were the best and highly rated either in season 1 or 2.' 'Season 3 already flopped even before filming,' said a third. While a fourth penned: 'Season 3 might lose its soul without Druckmann Mazin's good, but this story was born from Neil's mind.' The Last Of Us has proven popular with viewers and even critics, with the series receiving an impressive 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Series two concluded in May of this year, with some fans left furious over its ending they branded 'garbage'. It ended on a major cliffhanger over the character of Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and her fate following a shocking confrontation with Abby (Kaitlyn Dever).
