The best and worst hats of Royal Ascot - from mad millinery to 90s mother-of-the-bride fails

Daily Mail19-06-2025
A faux parrot perched on a bed of feathers, a deck of playing cards sprouting from the brim of a teacup and wide brims festooned with more blooms than the Chelsea Flower Show - it can only be Royal Ascot.
The high society occasion is one of the main events in the fashion calendar, statement hats are always the focal point of racegoers' eye-popping looks - although not always for the right reasons.
One newspaper columnist today described Queen Camilla 's choice of millinery in the week so far as 'walnut whip and a 'feathery ocean liner' and said her choice of headgear was reminiscent of a mother-of-the-bride in 1988.
Cutting words indeed, but the wife of King Charles was perhaps not the only one to miss the mark and look liike she was on her way to an exchange of vows in a coutnry church.
Carole Middleton also looked as if her undeniably expensive Philip Treacy hat could have come from the bridal party section of Debenhams.
Other's however, nailed their looks perfectly. Lucy Mecklenburgh as she channelled old Hollywood glamour in a powder blue fascinator complete with netting clad with small silver stars and a sizable bow
MAD HATTERS
Another racegoer certainly had all eyes on her as she daringly mixed cerulean, navy and yellow shades together and tied them into a sizable feather hat paired with ruffled satin bows
Milliner Tracy Rose is a common face at the races, attending many of the events to show off her bizarre showstopper collection of hats.
On Tuesday, she showed off her wares to imposing effect, donning a blue satin waved hat embroidered with large hot pink flowers and orange leaves, showcasing several bursts of colour to mark the start of summer.
One reveller was photographed sporting a very colourful ensemble which consisted of a yellow hat with colourful peacock feathers which playfully sat on the side of her head.
Another racegoer certainly had all eyes on her as she daringly mixed cerulean, navy and yellow shades together and tied them into a sizable feather hat paired with ruffled satin bows.
Alexandra Bertram, the brand and creative lead at the Ascot racecourse almost went the opposite way, opting for an all-black dress by Club L London and a Victoria Grant gold fascinator with black netting which had the word 'Dreamer' sewn on.
She said on her Instagram that she was 'obsessed with this insane hat,' which also had Playboy-esque bunny ears cropping out the top.
While some men are required to wear a top hat, depending on what enclosure they are in, TV host Francesca Cumani decided to combine the traditionally masculine race day ensemble and give it a more feminine twist.
The 42-year-old sported a cream Lock and Co top hat with a black flower wrapped around its base complete with black netting. She paired her accessory with an Emma Caderni vintage dress.
MOTHER-OF-THE-BRIDE MISSES
Carole Middleton was also wearing a wide-brimmed minimalist brown floral Phillip Treacy creation and Robinson Pelham oak leaf and acorns earrings she wore on her wedding day
Other racegoers chose to proudly wear more comedic hats, with one reveller casually strolling around the grounds with a faux parrot on her head.
The bird, which was completely made out of green feathers and beads for eyes, was placed on top of red flowers, echoing its natural habitat.
But some may have taken the hat craze a tad too literally, with two women linking up to pay an ode to the Hat Matter, a fictional character in Alice in Wonderland.
One woman was snapped sporting a hat reminiscent of the Mad Hatter's famous pocket watch along with his phrase: 'We're all mad here.'
Each number of the time was made out of playing cards of different numbers and suits, while the other racegoer simply donned a red and black fascinator with the other playing cards sprawling out of the top.
New-Jersey-based Milliner Ines Hernandez Tallaj also hopped on the feather trend, pairing it with a groovy 70s design.
Her extremely wide-brimmed fascinator brought together blue, orange and pink hues together which were swirled together in a vintage print.

Dancing with the Stars Grand Finale set to be rocked by shock kissing scandal

Dancing with the Stars is set to be rocked by a shock kissing scandal on Sunday's grand finale. According to an eye-witness, 63-year-old funnyman Shaun Micallef is set to go one step too far with host Chris Brown on the glittering final dance-off. A source revealed exclusively to Daily Mail this week that during filming Micallef planted a kiss on the lips of Brown in front of the studio audience - leaving the famed TV vet lost for words. The moment came in a post-dance interview on the Sky Deck during the Dancing With the Stars grand finale. Brown, who has been good humoured about the comedian's relentless kidding around all season, was suddenly stopped in his tracks when Micallef appeared to 'proposition' him. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'We should get some lunch after this, is this really happening?' Micallef joked as Brown reviewed the scores. 'He then went in for a kiss and they locked lips, leaving Brown in shock', the source revealed. 'He seemed to lose all composure for quite a while after that.' Micallef then turned to the camera, recalled the eyewitness, and said, 'That [kiss] is not for Channel Seven.' A spokesperson from Seven confirmed the 'interaction' took place, was not cut from the final edit, and will air during Monday's episode when Shaun and his dance partner Ash-Leigh Hunter strut their stuff in the Grand Finale. It comes after fan favourite Osher Günsberg was shown the door during a dramatic episode of Dancing with the Stars earlier this season. Taking to the ballroom with a Tango routine backed by David Bowie 's 1980 hit Fashion, the TV host put in a feverish performance that failed to impress the judges. Taking his cue from the evening's 'Kings and Queens of song' theme, judge Craig Revel Horwood did not mince words when delivering his verdict. 'Well that was a right royal mess! I don't know what that step was, coming down the ramp, darling, but it was fumbled...' Craig began, but a furious Osher interrupted. Visibly annoyed, Osher snapped, 'Would you like to try going down that Perspex ramp in those heels, sir? You're more than welcome to show me.' He continued to rage: 'But I need you to be doing it in a tango step while the person next to you is on one foot kicking, and you're holding their momentum against you. After you!' Craig seemed taken aback by the fiery exchange, replying to a fuming Osher, 'That is not my job'. He then continued on with his critique despite the tense atmosphere, which had host Sonia Kruger visibly shocked. 'It was completely erratic,' Craig said, after dismissing Osher's remarks. Craig told the frustrated TV personality, 'You were making mistakes left, right and centre.' Fellow judge Mark Wilson did offer Osher some words of encouragement, telling him that he admired his determination to improve his dancing skills. However, the final score was a dismal 15 points and Osher was sent home. Dancing with the Stars competitors are now set to head into the Grand Finale on Monday.

Love Island Ofcom complaints skyrocket to 9000 as viewers blast 'abusive' behaviour leaving stars 'broken' - and ANOTHER on-screen romp in shared bedroom sparks major backlash

Love Island Ofcom complaints have skyrocketed to a whopping 9000. Viewers of the ITV2 dating show have blasted the 'abusive' behaviour that has left stars 'broken' and ANOTHER on-screen romp which has sparked major backlash. 9,339 viewers were very unhappy some of the scenes that occurred during the programme - with the majority being about the alleged bullying towards Shakira Khan, 22. The complaints were registered with Ocfcom and now the watchdog is investigating the show. Shakira and Harry Cooksley, 30, recently got back together after he went exclusive with Helena Ford, 29, leaving her heartbroken. The trio had been involved in a very messy love triangle from the very start of the series, after originally coupling up with Shakira, and then deciding to be with Helena. Many have questioned Harry's behaviour throughout the show. Despite sharing their concern over Shakira, many have taken to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share how well Shakira has been perceived. 'Shakira is the most respectful, self aware, mature person in Love Island history, never mind the fact that she's only 22.' 'Shakira is so real that she's willing to leave the villa without a man or winning instead of faking it with Conor till the end, if anything we can be proud of her for staying true to herself, but damn Harry?!?' '"I do like him, I just don't like him enough," you know what Shakira that's real.' 'Well you can't say Shakira is a game player! She could have faked it with Ty and Conor to get to the final and potentially win but looks like she dgaf about winning or getting to the final.' Duty of care is available to all Islanders 24/7. But 29 people did take to Ofcom to share their concerns about Harry after he opened up about his true feelings towards Shakira. The publication reported that 298 were made about the way Blu Chegini, 26, spoke to Toni Laites, 24, during an argument - and accused the star of 'stirring drama' to get more 'air time' as final approaches. Megan Clarke, 24, made a shock return to the villa last week after getting brutally dumped from the villa - and this led onto 55 complains about it. Daily Mail contacted ITV for comment. Meanwhile others took to social media to share their complaints about some of the Islanders getting frisky in the communal bedroom. Earlier this week viewers pointed out that Meg Moore, x, and Dejon Noel-Williams, x, had close under the sheets during Monday and Tuesday's episodes. One said on X: 'Meg and Dejon having sex is making me sick I'm making a complaint to OFCOM.' 'Ffs every night Meg and Dejon having sex save our eyes plz.' 'I do not want to see Meg and Dejon having sex twice producers. My day is ruined.' 'I feel like Meg and Dejon is sexually assaulting me in my own home. Please don't ever show them having sex on my screen again please!' 'WE DON'T WANT TO SEE MEG AND DEJON HAVING SEX.' Last week it was revealed that Love Island had racked up more than one thousand Ofcom complaints with fans appalled by the 'misogyny and bullying' on the ITV2 show, which has reduced stars to tears. The recent few weeks of the series have been full of drama, so it's no surprise that viewers have taken to the telly regulator to share their concerns. The complaints that have been made have been registered with Ofcom, the regulator will not be investigating the show. According to The Sun, a whopping 280 people took to the broadcasting watchdog to shared their complaints over Harrison Solomon, 22, Dejon Noel-Williams, 26, and 30-year-old Harry Cooksley's alleged misogynic behaviour. Meanwhile others (247 people) shared their concern about Shakira after some alleged bullying. And there are some episodes in particular that concerned viewers. The instalment that aired on July 20 received a number of complaints - including 222 viewers that weren't happy about Dejon's behaviour towards women. And a number of islanders raised some eyebrows on July 17. 69 people complained about Harrison's alleged misogynic behaviour and a further 27 took to the regulator to share concern about Shakira's well-being. Love Island's episode on July 15 bagged 184 in total about a number of different things. 107 people complained about Harrison's alleged misogynic behaviour and 44 weren't happy with how Lauren Wood, 26, was perceived on the show. 34 others thought that there was some bullying behaviour towards Shakira and Toni. Before entering the villa, the show share a number of care protocols with the stars, including training in language and behaviour. They are also told to suspend social media and are given ongoing support before, during and after they take part in the programme. ITV's official website states: 'Programme contributors will be offered a full package of measures to ensure they remain supported prior to, during and after the filming period on the show. 'After an initial trial period, the show will now formally introduce a guideline asking participants to pause social media handles and accounts for the duration of their time on the show, to ensure that both the Islanders and their families are protected from the adverse effects of social media.' The welfare services that islanders are offered include: comprehensive psychological support, training on impacts of socal media, financial management, conversations regarding the impact of participation on the show. They are also offered an aftercare package and guidance and advice on taking on management.
