Where is John Mateer in latest Heisman Trophy odds?

USA Todaya day ago
The 2025 race for the Heisman Trophy is one of the most wide-open contests in recent history.
College football's most prestigious individual award won't be handed out until December, but there's already plenty of intrigue around this year's contestants.
That's because none of last year's four Heisman finalists are returning to college football this season. Colorado's Travis Hunter took home the award for the 2024 season, beating out his fellow finalists in Boise State's Ashton Jeanty, Oregon's Dillon Gabriel and Miami's Cam Ward.
Strangely enough, none of the next six highest vote-getters are returning to college either. Arizona State's Cam Skattebo, Army's Bryson Daily, Penn State's Tyler Warren, Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, Indiana's Kurtis Rourke, and Syracuse's Kyle McCord are all off to the NFL, meaning the top ten finishers in the Heisman vote from last year have are gone.
This means that there's plenty of opportunity for the next wave of collegiate stars to make a name for themselves. Once again, the top four vote-getters get to go to New York City for the Heisman presentation.
BetMGM has updated their Heisman Trophy odds earlier this week, and they reflect the chaos that could ensue in this year's race. Currently, it's Arch Manning of Texas who has the shortest odds to take home the trophy at plus-600, followed by Garrett Nussmeier (LSU) at plus-850 and Cade Klubnik (Clemson) at plus-900.
While Manning was a five-star prospect and has garnered plenty of hype due to his name, he's still unproven as a full-time starter in college football. Players like Nussmeier, Klubnik, and Drew Allar of Penn State (plus-1400) are all proven starters, but each needs to take the next step toward superstardom in 2025. The top non-quarterbacks in BetMGM's odds are wide receiver Jeremiah Smith of Ohio State (plus-1000) and wide receiver Ryan Williams of Alabama (plus-3500).
When it comes to Heisman pedigree, there are few programs that can go face-to-face with the Oklahoma Sooners. Seven OU players have hoisted the famous bronze statue. Those players are Billy Vessels (1952), Steve Owens (1969), Billy Sims (1978), Jason White (2003), Sam Bradford (2008), Baker Mayfield (2017), and Kyler Murray (2018).
The Sooner who has the best chance to join those legendary players this season is starting quarterback John Mateer, who would be the fourth Oklahoma QB to take home the award. Mateer's odds currently sit at plus-2500, which places him in a three-way tie for tenth. He has the same odds as Carson Beck from Miami and Sam Leavitt from Arizona State.
However, Mateer falls below players like Dante Moore at Oregon, LaNorris Sellers from South Carolina, Julian Sayin from Ohio State and DJ Lagway at Florida. Each of those quarterbacks are going off at plus-1800. Mateer will get to have quarterback duels with Manning, Nussmeier and Sellers in 2025, as well as Ole Miss' Austin Simmons and Alabama's Ty Simpson, who both have plus-4000 odds.
The Heisman will be decided this fall, not this summer. Mateer enters his first season with the Sooners, but it's his second season starting in new OC Ben Arbuckle's system and his third season in it overall, after he was a backup in 2023. He knows what his offensive coordinator wants and how to operate Arbuckle's Air Raid scheme.
Mateer's main focus will obviously be winning games this year. However, if he's able to help propel Oklahoma back to where it belongs, he could be in consideration for the ultimate individual hardware this year in what could be one of the wildest Heisman Trophy races of the past few seasons.

Familiar faces, new places: 10 biggest QB transfers to know ahead of the 2025 college football season

With the 2025 college football season just weeks away, it's time to re-familiarize yourself with the myriad transfers that happened during the offseason. Here are 10 of the biggest quarterback moves over the winter and spring as teams like Miami, Louisville and Colorado looked to add veteran QBs to replace their starters who were taken in the 2025 NFL Draft. Miami QB Carson Beck (from Georgia) A year ago, Beck was a Heisman favorite and hoping to become a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Now he's at Miami looking to salvage his draft prospects following a disappointing 2024 season that ended with an elbow injury. Advertisement After completing 72% of his passes and averaging 9.5 yards an attempt in 2023, Beck completed just 65% of his throws and averaged 7.8 yards an attempt in 2024. He also threw twice as many interceptions as he suffered a torn UCL in his throwing arm during Georgia's win over Texas in the SEC title game. If Beck looks more like he did in 2023, Miami has a great chance to make the College Football Playoff. Former Georgia QB Carson Beck is now at Miami. The Seminoles and Crimson Tide meet in Week 1 and Castellanos made it known in an interview with On3 that 'I just don't see [Alabama] stopping me.' Advertisement Those are big words from a guy who lost his starting job in 2024 before deciding to transfer. In eight games last season, Castellanos threw for 1,366 yards and 18 TDs with just five interceptions. Florida State is hoping he's a massive upgrade over the QB play the team had last year in its disastrous 2-10 campaign. Iowa QB Mark Gronowski (from South Dakota State) One of the best quarterbacks at the FCS level moved east to try to give the Hawkeyes an offensive spark. Gronowski was a four-year starter at South Dakota State and threw for more than 20 TDs and rushed for more than 400 yards in each of the past three seasons. In 2024, he completed 61% of his passes for 2,721 yards and 23 TDs while rushing 83 times for 577 yards and seven scores. If he posts those numbers in 2025, Iowa will be a sleeper contender to make the Big Ten title game. UCLA QB Nico Iamaleava (from Tennessee) Beck was the highest-profile transfer of the offseason until the Iamaleava saga became the story of the spring. The former five-star recruit left Tennessee in the spring over a reported NIL dispute and transferred to his home state where he will start at UCLA. Advertisement Iamaleava's first full season as a starter was a relative disappointment. Tennessee made the College Football Playoff, but it was on the back of a stellar run game and a strong defense. Ten of Iamaleava's 19 TD passes came over UT's four non-conference games. And he threw just five TDs against SEC opponents who weren't Vanderbilt. While Iamaleava went back to California, Tennessee added the guy who was set to be the Bruins' starter had Iamaleava stayed in Knoxville. Former App State QB Joey Aguilar went to Tennessee after Iamaleava's transfer and has the inside track to start for the Vols. Nico Iamaleava left Tennessee for UCLA during the spring. (Photo by) (Ric Tapia via Getty Images) Oklahoma QB John Mateer (from Washington State) Mateer and former Washington State offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle are tasked with reviving an Oklahoma offense that sputtered throughout much of the 2024 season. Advertisement Mateer was one of the most productive QBs in college football a season ago with 29 TD passes and 15 rushing TDs. He threw for over 3,100 yards across 12 games while also rushing for 826 yards on 178 attempts in his first season as a starter. In addition to Mateer, OU also added former Cal RB Jaydn Ott through the transfer portal ahead of what could be a make-or-break season for coach Brent Venables in Year 4. Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza (from Cal) Mendoza has shown flashes of excellence over two years at Cal as he slots into the starting lineup for an Indiana team that made the College Football Playoff a season ago behind a stellar season from former Ohio QB Kurtis Rourke. Mendoza completed 69% of his passes for 3,004 yards and 16 TDs in 2024. He was 25-of-36 for 233 yards and 2 TDs in Cal's win over Auburn and threw for 285 yards and two scores in the Bears' one-point loss to Miami. Mendoza could be an early pick in the 2026 NFL Draft with a strong season. Yahoo Sports draft analyst Nate Tice is a big fan of Mendoza's potential. Advertisement Duke QB Darian Mensah (from Tulane) Mensah comes to Duke after a strong debut season at Tulane. He was 189-of-287 passing for 2,723 yards and 22 TDs with just six interceptions in 2024 as the Green Wave made the AAC title game. Mensah was one of the first QB transfers of the offseason as the Blue Devils and coach Manny Diaz moved early to secure his services. Former Texas QB Maalik Murphy started for Duke in 2024 and is now at Oregon State. Louisville QB Miller Moss (from UCLA) Like Iamaleava, Moss wasn't able to parlay a stellar bowl game start at the end of the 2023 season into sustained success in 2024. After throwing for six TDs against Louisville in the Holiday Bowl, Moss tossed just 18 TDs over nine games in 2024. He lost his starting job after a three-interception performance against Washington in early November that dropped USC to 4-5 on the season. Advertisement Now he takes over for Tyler Shough at Louisville after the well-traveled Shough parlayed a strong season in Jeff Brohm's offense into becoming a second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Colorado QB Kaidon Salter (from Liberty) Salter is hoping to bounce back from a disappointing 2024 season. But he first needs to win the starting job with the Buffaloes. Coach Deion Sanders said at Big 12 media day that he wasn't sure if Salter or freshman Julian Lewis would be his team's QB. Salter's 2023 stats were phenomenal; he had 42 total TDs and threw for over 2,800 yards while rushing for more than 1,000 as Liberty made the Fiesta Bowl on the heels of an undefeated regular season. But the Flames took a step back in 2024 and Salter did too. He completed just 56% of his passes last season and had 22 total touchdowns. Colorado brought both Kaidon Salter and Julian Lewis to Big 12 media day. (Photo by) (Stacy Revere via Getty Images) Houston QB Conner Weigman (from Texas A&M) Weigman is looking to play more than six games in a season for the first time in his college career. He appeared in just 15 games over three seasons with the Aggies after a shoulder injury derailed the start of his 2024 season. After missing four games, Weigman shined in an early October start against Missouri. However, he struggled in the two games that followed and lost his starting job to Marcel Reed. Advertisement At Houston, Weigman has a clear path to the starting job as the Cougars look to bounce back from a 4-8 season with a significant upgrade at QB. The four QBs who threw passes for the Cougars in 2024 combined to throw just nine TDs and 16 interceptions. Other notable transfers: Utah QB Devon Dampier (from New Mexico), Missouri QB Beau Pribula (from Penn State), Wisconsin QB Billy Edwards (from Maryland), Northwestern QB Preston Stone (from SMU), Tennessee QB Joey Aguilar (from UCLA and Appalachian State), Auburn QB Jackson Arnold (from Oklahoma), Kentucky QB Zach Calzada (from Incarnate Word), Rutgers QB Athan Kaliakmanis (from Minnesota), North Carolina QB Gio Lopez (from South Alabama), Syracuse QB Steve Angeli (from Notre Dame), Virginia QB Chandler Morris (from TCU), Cal QB Devin Brown (from Ohio State), Tulane QB Brendan Sullivan (from Iowa)

2025 Miami Dolphins Fantasy Preview: Make or break for Tua Tagovailoa

The Dolphins gave us more of the same in 2024. They were dynamite when Tua Tagovailoa was healthy and a disaster when their quarterback was out of the lineup. Business as usual. Despite the spreadsheets going brrr, the design of the offense was vastly different, creating jaw-dropping risks for fantasy managers in 2025. 2024 Miami Dolphins Stats (Rank) Points per game: 20.3 (22nd) Total yards per game: 325.4 (18th) Plays per game: 63.6 (9th) Dropbacks per game: 42 (9th) Dropback EPA per play: 0.09 (15th) Rush attempts per game: 26.4 (19th) Rush EPA per play: -0.25 (31st) Tua on the hot seat The Dolphins played two games with Tua to start the year before he suffered a concussion that landed him on injured reserve. That sent Miami scrambling and left them with Tyler Huntley at quarterback. The move, in turn, forced them into a check-down scheme for the ages. Their team aDOT of 6.7 was the third-lowest of the last decade. Head coach and offensive mastermind Mike McDaniel schemed up easy throws for his backups and kept that philosophy in place even when Tua was active in the second half of the season. This resulted in career receiving numbers for Jonnu Smith and De'Von Achane, but the wide receivers were left hanging. Injuries were also an issue on the other side of the ball, but Miami's defense held on and finished the regular season ranked eighth in EPA per play. We're probably discussing at least a playoff loss for the Phins if McDaniel knew how to get more out of his backup quarterbacks. Instead, McDaniel is on the hot seat and Tua's career is on the ropes. Passing Game It's hard to stress this enough, but Tua was one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the league last year. Tagovailoa ranked: EPA per play - 7th Completion percent over expected - 8th Adjusted completion rate - 2nd Huntley, on the other hand, couldn't match that production. He ranked: EPA per play - 37th Completion percent over expected - 12th Adjusted completion rate - 12th Huntley showed some ability to execute what was asked of him, but, at the end of the day, his efficiency was putrid. That's to say nothing of a single dreadful start made by Skylar Thompson and a few comically futile snaps from Tom Boyle. As expected, all of the Miami players experienced drastic splits with and without Tua. Will Tagovailoa play a full season this year? Who knows. He's undoubtedly more prone to concussions and likely to spend longer on the bench when that does happen than the average passer. In redraft—where you can cut players at will—his availability is not an issue. The 2024 passing yardage leader is free money as the QB22. The risk becomes much more tangible in Best Ball drafts where you are stuck with him for the entire season. Moving to his receivers, Miami simply gave up on their explosive passing game last year, leaving both Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle out to dry. Hill's falloff from 3.72 yards per route to 1.75 is one of the most dramatic falloffs of the past decade. If Hill's woes were exclusively related to his wrist injury or the design of the Miami offense, he could easily bounce back as a WR1 in 2025. He started to pick up the slack at the end of the season with two 100-yard games over the final five weeks. On the other hand, if he simply lost a step as the league's premier speed receiver, his days as an elite fantasy asset are over. Waddle experienced a similar dropoff in efficiency—cratering from 2.5 YPRR to 1.5—but he's five years younger than Hill. You wouldn't expect him to be past his prime already, though that's not entirely impossible. Waddle is going at a discount compared to his 2024 ADP, but drafters are far more confident in him rebounding compared to Hill. He has fallen 24 spots versus last year while Hill is down 20 spots. Given the value of early-round picks, that's a massive discount for Hill and only a modest markdown for Waddle. Hill offers a better ceiling outcome and comes at a better price relative to his 2024 cost. If you want to gamble on this offense, he's your man. Miami only had one other relevant pass-catcher last year—Jonnu Smith—and they just sent him packing to Pittsburgh. Smith emerged as a premier checkdown option in Miami's stunted offense. He averaged a 6.9/67/.9 receiving line over the final eight weeks of the season. Even including his slow start, only four tight ends averaged more yards per route than Jonnu (1.95) on the season. The Dolphins lured Darren Waller out of retirement to replace Smith. Waller averaged 1.55 YPRR, 9.4 PPR points per game, and had a 73.1 PFF receiving grade in his final season with the Giants in 2023. All three marks were top-15 among tight ends. He could be a viable seam-stretcher for Miami if he still has some juice in 2025, but it's hard to bet on a player who last played an (almost) full season in 2020 and has spent more time in the past year pursuing a rap career than professional football. Malik Washington's 2024 stats tell you all you need to know about Miami's WR3. He averaged .86 YPRR, good for 105th in the NFL. That put him just a handful of spots ahead of dead last among wide receivers. He wasn't bad with the ball in his hands. The rookie posted 4.7 yards after the catch per reception, placing him 38th among qualified wideouts. He simply couldn't earn a target to save his life in a crowded pass-catching room. Whether he or free agent addition Nick Westbrook-Ikhine wins the WR3 job is immaterial to fantasy managers. Running Game Miami's underwhelming passing output was surprising, but their dead-on-arrival ground game was shocking. Their -.21 EPA per play average on rush attempts ranked 315th out of 320 team-seasons over the past decade. Raheem Mostert ran for 18 touchdowns at 4.8 YPC in 2023. He found the end zone twice at 3.3 YPC last year. Achane, the team's lightning-in-a-bottle on the ground, went from 7.8 YPC—the highest market for a running back with at least 100 attempts in NFL history—to 4.5. Achane also set the record in NFL Next Gen's rush yards over expected metric at 2.87 per carry two years ago. The previous high-water mark was 1.86. He fell to -.42 RYOE per attempt in 2024, one of the worst marks in the league. While some of this can be chalked up to Achane running hotter than the sun as a rookie, a large part of his decline has to be blamed on the environment. Miami's stuff rate (carries stopped at or behind the line of scrimmage) was 29.3 percent last year, the fourth-highest mark of the past decade. Achane is a back who thrives on clear runways but doesn't have the power to turn small losses into modest gains. With the team's offensive line collapsing and the threat of a deep shot vanishing from the passing attack, Achane never had a chance to show off his home run speed last year. The good news is that he became a de facto third receiver for the Phins by leading all running backs in slot routes (120) and wide routes (58). Achane caught 78 balls for 592 yards and six scores. He led all running backs in all three categories, allowing him to finish as the PPR RB5 despite the poor rushing metrics. With Jonnu gone, his receiving role gives him an unprecedented floor. The upside for elite efficiency also gives him an immense ceiling. Jaylen Wright appears to be in line for the RB2 role with Mostert being cut early in the offseason. Like Achane, Wright's rushing metrics were underwhelming to say the least. He averaged a paltry 3.7 YPC on 68 attempts as a rookie. Miami only spent a sixth-round pick on Ollie Gordon and $1.4 million on Alexander Mattison as potential replacements for the backup job. GM Chris Grier traded a future third-round pick to move up for Wright in the fourth round last year. He isn't guaranteed the backup gig or any standalone work, but an RB51 pricetag is a minimal cost for a likely handcuff in an offense built on efficiency. 2025 Miami Dolphins Win Total DraftKings Over/Under: 7.5 Pick: Under (-105) The Dolphins are an all-or-nothing team. Either Tua stays healthy and the team excels or he misses time, McDaniel is fired, and the team looks to reset in 2026. I'd take the under on them this year, given the fragility of Tagovailoa's health and the potential for Hill to be over the Hill (pun intended). If you want to bet overs, taking a long shot like +750 to win the AFC East makes more sense than a simple win total play.

Celtics' Jordan Walsh reveals message from Joe Mazzulla after ejection

The Summer League Celtics dropped their first game of the tournament on Monday, July 14, losing to the Miami Heat 96-100. Jordan Walsh's ejection in the second quarter likely played a roll in the defeat. Walsh, 21, was having his best game thus far, before picking up two consecutive technical fouls, the second of which saw him push Pelle Larsson into the stands where Brad Stevens, Mike Zarren and new Celtics owner Bill Chisholm were sitting. Despite Walsh's poor decision-making, it would appear that Joe Mazzulla was a fan of the fire and fight that Walsh displayed on the court. When speaking to reporters in attendance after the game, Walsh shared a message Mazzulla had sent him via text. 'As soon as I got ejected, I got to the locker room, I checked my phone, He was texting me, 'I loved this out of you,'' Walsh said. 'So take that for what it is, but Joe was hype.' Mazzulla has developed a reputation for his unique approach to coaching and how he looks to challenge his players both mentally and physically. As such, it should come as no surprise that Walsh's heated moment was something that endeared him to the championship-winning coach. Nevertheless, Walsh will likely want to avoid such lapses in judgment moving forward. After all, minutes are up for grabs this season, and mistakes like the one against Miami could harm his chances of cementing himself as part of the team's rotation moving forward.
