Chirah Dam fast-tracked for twin cities' water security
The move follows directives from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, aimed at ensuring long-term water security for the twin cities. The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has submitted a formal proposal to the Punjab Secretary of Housing for project approval.
The Chirah Dam is expected to supply 28 million gallons of water per day (MGD) to the twin cities. The estimated cost of the project is approximately Rs80 billion. In parallel, two other key dam projects — Chahan Dam and Dadhocha Dam — are already under development and are slated for completion in the coming years.
Originally delayed under the Capital Development Authority (CDA), the Chirah Dam project is now being fast-tracked following a recent high-level meeting chaired by the prime minister. The meeting focused on addressing the escalating water demand and the gap in current supply. In response, WASA submitted a request to engage consultants for the preparation of the project's PC-I (Planning Commission Form-I).
Official sources say the Punjab Irrigation Department will oversee the construction of Chirah Dam, while WASA Rawalpindi will be responsible for establishing the surface water treatment plant and water distribution network. Upon completion, the dam will supply treated water equally to both cities — 14 MGD each.
Meanwhile, the Chahan Dam Water Supply Project — currently underway with Asian Development Bank loan funding of Rs33.95b — is being executed under the Dream Project. Once operational, it will add 17 MGD to Rawalpindi's water supply.
In addition, the Dadhocha Dam project is under construction by the irrigation department and will provide an extra 35 MGD to Rawalpindi. WASA Rawalpindi will manage the water purification, pipeline network, and rising main installations. For this, it has engaged Usmani & Co as the consulting firm to develop the PC-I documentation.
According to WASA Managing Director Rawalpindi, Muhammad Saleem Ashraf, the combined output from Chirah, Chahan, and Dadhocha dams will result in an additional 80 MGD of water — 14 MGD for Islamabad and 66 MGD for Rawalpindi.
These initiatives, coupled with existing water sources such as Khanpur Dam, Rawal Dam, and various tube wells, are expected to significantly enhance the region's water supply infrastructure and sustainably meet the long-term needs of both cities.

PSX rally continues as KSE-100 hits new high
Buying momentum continued at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), fueled by a strong economic outlook and robust corporate earnings, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index gaining over 700 points during the opening hours of trading on Thursday. At 10:50am, the benchmark index was hovering at 145,814.78 level, an increase of 726.29 points or 0.50%. The prospect of a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin over the war in Ukraine also underpinned sentiment, benefiting the euro, while weighing on oil prices as traders gauged the outlook for sanctions on Moscow. At the same time, markets largely shook off Trump's latest tariff threats, including an additional 25% tariff on India over purchases of Russian oil and a threatened 100% duty on chips. Japan's broad Topix index rose 0.9% to reach an all-time high, with the more tech-focused Nikkei also gaining by about the same margin. Advanced security features introduced in passport: Minister told
ISLAMABAD: The backlog of passport applications has ended, and advanced security features have been introduced, said Immigration and Passport (I&P) Directorate Director General (DG) Mustafa Jamal Qazi on Wednesday. Qazi said this, while briefing Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal at the passport headquarters. During the visit, the federal minister toured various sections of the Passport Directorate and observed the passport production process. The DG of passports, briefed the minister on the latest advancements in passport lamination and security features. The issue of passport backlog has been eliminated, with all pending passport applications being processed efficiently, Qazi further said. He said that the directorate is providing an easy online passport service for overseas Pakistanis, so that they can access essential services remotely. Thanks to modern printing technologies and state-of-the-art offices, the passport processing time has been significantly reduced, he said. Jamal expressed interest in the incorporation of artificial intelligence in passport production. He emphasised that the timely delivery of passports and the introduction of advanced security features in line with the government's vision is a commendable step forward for Pakistan. The CCoCIP directed the Ministry of Maritime Affairs to conclude deliberations with local fishermen on starting the international transshipment of seafood from the Gwadar Port. photo: file Listen to article The Cabinet Committee on Chinese Investment Projects (CCoCIP) has directed the ministries concerned to expedite work on finalising a road map for the relocation of Chinese industries to Gwadar along with other Chinese projects before the visit of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Beijing. In a recent meeting, the cabinet committee reviewed the implementation status presented by the respective ministries and divisions and took several decisions. It underscored the need for swift implementation of previous decisions to ensure an environment conducive for Chinese investors. The road map is being finalised, which will be tabled before the Chinese authorities during the upcoming visit of PM Sharif. The Board of Investment (Bol) highlighted the progress made on preparing the road map, which was being developed in coordination with the Ministry of Industries and Production. The CCoCIP directed the Bol to finalise the road map at the earliest and present it to the committee for consideration and approval. It noted with concern that the project linking the Gwadar desalination plant with the national grid through the extension of power distribution lines from Panjgur had not yet been completed. It directed the Power Division to submit recommendations within three days as to how a project of national strategic importance could be fast-tracked for early completion. Additionally, the CCoCIP voiced concern that despite repeated efforts, the cabinet's decision on the revision of electricity supply mechanism for the Rashakai Special Economic Zone (SEZ) had not been implemented. It urged the BoI to prepare a detailed case study, with specific timelines, regarding the delay. It also noted that the Power Division had submitted that the committee's decision to supply electricity to the Gwadar desalination plant from the national grid had been implemented. The CCoCIP directed the Ministry of Maritime Affairs to conclude deliberations with local fishermen on starting the international transshipment of seafood from the Gwadar Port and submit a compliance report in that regard. It instructed the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives to discuss and settle all the unresolved issues with the government of Sindh related to the proposed Karachi Comprehensive Coastal Development Zone and prepare a compliance report. It also observed the position submitted by the Ministry of Commerce, stating that the Statutory Regulatory Order (SRO) facilitating the export of potassium sulphate fertiliser from the Gwadar Port by relaxing the Export Policy Order had been issued. The cabinet body directed the Ministry of Planning to conclude deliberations with the relevant ministries and divisions on the foreign currency facilitation pilot project in the Gwadar Free Zone and submit a report regarding the implementation status of the project. It gave directives that the Power Division, in consultation with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), should fast-track the implementation of the cabinet's decision on the revision of electricity supply mechanism for the Rashakai SEZ and come up with an implementation report for review in the next CCoCIP meeting. In that regard, Nepra was asked to expedite the matter at its end. The committee emphasised that the Bol should implement the pending decisions forthwith as well as prepare a relevant report.
