"Why Not Marathi?" Huge Row Over Penguin Names At Mumbai's Byculla Zoo

NDTV6 days ago

Mumbai:
The penguins at the Byculla Zoo have been in the headlines since they arrived in Mumbai in 2016. The penguins became available for public viewing from 2017 at the zoo and since then have become very popular among visitors to the zoo.
An idea initially pushed by Shiv Sena UBT leader and Worli MLA Aaditya Thackeray, these penguins became a subject of public debate from day one.
Seven years later, another round of politics has broken out over the naming of the penguins. BJP leaders say that since new penguins are born in Maharashtra, they should be given Marathi names so that Maharashtra's cultural identity and Marathi language are respected.
The controversy comes at a time when the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections are round the corner in Mumbai, and political parties are giving prominence to issues of identity and language.
What's In A Name?
In March 2025, eight penguins kept in Ranibagh gave birth to three chicks. The zoological museum administration named them Noddy, Tom and Pingu. This is what the BJP leaders are objecting to.
BJP leader from Byculla constituency Nilesh Bankar objected to this and sent two letters to the zoo administration.
According to the BJP leader, since Marathi has recently been accorded the classical language status, Marathi names should have been given priority while naming the penguins. "Giving English names to these penguins is injustice to the Marathi language. Isn't this hatred towards Marathi language?" he said.
BJP's Push For Marathi Names
BJP leaders said the penguins were born in Mumbai. Describing the newborn penguins as 'native residents'/'sons of the soil' i.e., bhumiputra from birth, the BJP argues they should be given Marathi names.
Letters were sent, warning the administration that if it did not take positive steps regarding Marathi renaming, the BJP would launch a "strong agitation". Copies of the letters have also been sent to the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Guardian Minister, and BMC officials.
However, there was no official response from the zoo administration to the BJP leaders, following which Nilesh Banker and other BJP workers protested in front of the zoo.
The Big Picture: BMC Elections
Mumbai has seen politics over language and cultural identity. Earlier these issues were limited to people and jobs, but now it has reached the penguin colony too. The controversy has become a subject of political, linguistic and cultural debate.
The zoo administration hasn't responded to the demands yet and there is no clarity yet on whether there will be any change in the names of these penguins or not.
Debate Over Expenditure
The opposition in the BMC had described the exercise of introducing penguins as wasteful expenditure and raised questions on whether the penguins will be able to survive in Mumbai's climate even with the climate-controlled facilities created for them.
Not only did they survive but the first penguin baby was born in Mumbai in 2018. Unfortunately, it did not survive and died within a week. However, since the programme has had success and the penguins are among the star attractions at the zoo.
So far most of the penguins at the Byculla zoo have had English names but this time around that could change.

Bihar Elections: Alliance On Track, NDA Seat Finalisation Soon; Nitish Kumar To Be CM Face

Last Updated: According to sources, ticket distribution in the Bihar assembly elections within the NDA is likely to follow the same formula as in the Lok Sabha elections The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has decided to contest all seats in the upcoming Bihar elections, with sources saying seat distribution may not have been decided yet but other factors have been considered. 'Which caste will get representation on which seat has already been decided for all the 243 seats," a top source told CNN-News18. The state leaders have held several rounds of meetings to understand the share of seats that the NDA wants to contest. Another two or three rounds of meetings are expected to take place before the focus shifts to the finalisation in Delhi. After that, a detailed meeting with the alliance partners will take place to firm up plans for all the 243 seats. Also, there is no doubt in the mind of the alliance that Nitish Kumar will continue to be the face of the bloc. The decision to continue as chief minister after the elections will be left to Kumar, the sources added. On the kind of commentary that political leaders have been making against Kumar's conduct, BJP sources indicated: 'Any sensitive and sensible politician will never make a remark on somebody's health… One should always refrain from commenting on the health of seniors." Alliance partners Chirag Paswan, Jitan Ram Manjhi, and Upendra Kushwaha will contest in the state. Paswan had expressed his wish to contest the assembly polls, pushing forward his 'Bihari first' stance, and his party gave the go-ahead in a recent meeting. According to sources, ticket distribution in the Bihar assembly elections within the NDA is likely to follow the same formula as in the Lok Sabha elections. In the Lok Sabha elections, BJP contested 17 seats, JD(U) 16, LJP five, while Jitan Ram Manjhi's HAM and Upendra Kushwaha's Rashtriya Lok Morcha contested one seat each. Although BJP contested one more seat than JD(U) in the Lok Sabha polls, in the assembly elections, JD(U) may contest on one or two more seats than BJP. As per sources, JD(U) may contest around 102–103 out of the 243 seats, while BJP may contest on 101–102 seats. The remaining roughly 40 seats will be allotted to Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM), and Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM). The BJP has decided that it will not award a ticket to a candidate whose feedback is negative in the last two surveys that the party has done. Seat sharing and seat allocation will also be done on the basis of ability to win. 'Any alliance partner who has lost the seat more than twice may be exchanged with the other alliance partner," the top sources added. Earlier, it was speculated that Union Home Minister Amit Shah would go to Bihar on June 15 but his visit stands postponed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to travel to Bihar on June 20 for an engagement in Siwan. The Election Commission has indicated that the Bihar assembly polls will take place in either two or three phases. The full bench of the EC, including chief election commissioner Ganesh Kumar, is expected to travel to Bihar this month. First Published: June 10, 2025, 13:09 IST

'CAT Exam Was Less Difficult': Sonali Bendre's Raj Thackeray Answer 'Confuses' Netizens

Last Updated: Recently, Sonali Bendre denied rumours linking her to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray in an interview. Sonali Bendre recently left netizens confused when she addressed her link-up rumours with Raj Thackeray. After a video of the actress opening up about her alleged relationship with the politician surfaced online, several social media users reacted to it and wondered, 'Kehna kya chahte ho (What do you want to say)?" While one of the social media users argued that Sonali is only confusing everyone with her cryptic response, others joked that it was easier to clear competitive exams than understand her answer. 'This video of Sonali Bendre reminds me of those SSC LDC-style clerical exam questions on family or blood relations—like, 'If this person's brother is someone's fufa and his mausi is another person's daadi, then how are they all related?'" one of the users wrote. If you can solve this puzzle of Sonali's connect with Raj CAT paper has less difficult Blood Relation puzzles. Too many variables. — Crystal Clear (@Crystal_x_Clear) June 9, 2025 This video of Sonali Bendre reminds me of those SSC LDC-style clerical exam questions on family or blood relations—like, 'If this person's brother is someone's fufa and his mausi is another person's daadi, then how are they all related?" #sonalibendre #ANI #SmitaPrakash — Nikhil Pandey (@Nikhil_Pandey04) June 9, 2025 What Did Sonali Bendre Say About Raj Thackeray? Recently, Sonali Bendre denied rumours linking her to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray and told ANI, 'I don't know. I mean, a lot of people… I think it's just not in very good taste when people talk about it like that. First of all, I mean, there are families involved and people involved in all of that." The 90s diva explained that the association between the two families goes back decades and added, 'Other than the fact that my brother-in-law and my sister… my brother-in-law who's a cricketer and hence used to play cricket with Raj's cousin… Sister's husband and they always played together. Secondly, my sister's mother-in-law was the head of the department that taught us English literature in the (Ramnarain) Ruia College, which I'm from." The actress further revealed a personal family connection, saying, '…so they all knew each other. For me, the connection was that Sharmila, Raj's wife, her mother, and my Maasi were best friends. Her mother has held me for 10 days because you know how, oh, her, my mother's younger sister, Maasi. So when she delivered Raj, they all came laughing. Oh, her elder sister's baby. Let's go and see the baby. They've come to the hospital and seen me." First Published:

Robert Vadra Summoned Today For Questioning In Land Deal Case By Probe Agency ED

New Delhi: Businessman Robert Vadra, the husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi and brother-in-law of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, has been summoned for questioning today by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case linked to a 2008 Haryana land deal. The ED served the summons today; Mr Vadra is yet to show up at the federal agency's office in central Delhi. Mr Vadra was questioned in the case for about 16 hours over three days in April in an ED action that he had termed a "political witch hunt" against him and his family. The deal at the centre of the ED case against Mr Vadra is about a land in Haryana that was bought by his company, Skylight Hospitality, in 2008 for Rs 7.5 crore. Its value spiked after Mr Vadra obtained a permit to develop a housing society on the land. In 2012, he sold it to DLF for Rs 58 crore. With the Congress in power in Haryana at that time, the BJP accused them of stealing the land from farmers to give to Mr Vadra. Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who was then the Chief Minister, had denied the allegation. "The Congress did not give even an inch of government land to Robert Vadra. If the BJP shows proof, I will leave politics," he had said when the BJP raised the issue again before last year's assembly elections.
