Olly Murs speaks out about X Factor experience as ex-stars slam ITV show
Olly Murs has defended the legacy of The X Factor after a string of stars slammed the programme. The show, created by Simon Cowell, has produced some of the biggest names in music, but while the majority of the contestants celebrate their experience, others have hit out at it.
In recent years, the programme has come under fire, with some former stars claiming that there was a lack of care – an allegation which has been strongly denied by the production team. After 2011, the programme began to see a decline in viewing figures before it was announced in July 2021 that it would no longer air.
Over the course of its tenure on TV, the show produced winners including the likes of Leona Lewis, Rak-Su, Little Mix, Ben Haenow, Louisa Johnson and Matt Cardle. Meanwhile, other successful artists such as One Direction, Olly Murs, Fleur East, Stacey Solomon and Rebecca Ferguson have gone on to have successful careers, despite not winning. It comes after reports of all the celebrities rumoured to be joining BBC Strictly Come Dancing 2025.
But Olly, who has been fiercely loyal to the programme, has now opened up about the legacy and how important it has been in the music industry. "I think there's no doubt we can all sit here and say that the X Factor was huge," he commented.
Speaking to BBC Radio Lancashire ahead of his headline slot, turning on the Blackpool Illuminations on August 29, he continued: "It's hugely successful for creating such stars, from the One Direction boys, to Harry Styles, Niall has obviously done things, Louis, I mean, all the boys from that band came out and did great stuff.
"You know, me, James Arthur, Little Mix, Lucy Spraggan – there's some real, I mean, the list goes on and on, to be honest. Alexandra Burke! There have been endless people who have come. Stacey Solomon, of course, even though she's not doing music, she's doing so well herself."
Olly went on to say: "There's just so many over the years that have just had such big careers. That's the thing. That's what the show was built on, bringing young people off the street or young people an opportunity and a chance to change their lives forever. We took it and embraced it and look where we are now."
Speaking about turning on the iconic Blackpool Illuminations, Olly told the press: "Very honoured to be asked, over the years so many iconic artists have done it so it's going to be a cool night and I'm very excited to do it." Reflecting on being asked, Olly revealed: "Surprised but happy and I've no doubt will be a super day, plus all the tickets are free for the event."
But what will the cheeky Essex chap be performing on the night? He explained: "Yeah, I'll be performing a full set with all the hits, and yes, I'll be playing new music which is exciting for me! Looking forward to the fans getting to hear it."
"Dance With Me Tonight," he revealed would be his one song to sum up the experience of Blackpool, as he explained: "Blackpool is a place for the families to have fun and enjoy the festivities all year round. From young kids to grandmas, this song gets everyone moving! I look forward to seeing everyone dance to it."

Olly Murs' wife Amelia shows off her growing bare bump in a grey bra as they share sweet behind-the-scenes clips from pregnancy shoot
Olly Murs ' wife Amelia showed off her growing bump in sweet behind-the-scenes clips from their pregnancy shoot. The fitness fanatic, 32, and her husband Olly, 40, share 15-month old daughter Madison, and are expecting their second child together. In one video from their new shoot, Amelia showed her bare bump in a grey Calvin Klein bra and low-rise jeans. Olly wore a matching outfit and playfully lifted his T-shirt up to show off his washboard abs, while Amelia pulled a funny face. The couple then changed into matching black ensembles, with Olly giving Amelia's bump a kiss. They captioned the sweet video: 'Bump's first cameo… here's a little BTS from a shoot we won't forget' Amelia and Olly announced their second pregnancy in April. In an adorable black and white video, the family of three were seen walking through the park with Madison sat on her father's shoulders. She wore a denim jacket embossed with the words 'BIG SIS', while Amelia held a reel of snaps of the baby scan. They penned in a caption: 'We're so egg-cited to share this..… Another Baby Murs on the way.' Olly and his bodybuilder partner tied the knot in July 2023 and announced the arrival of their baby girl on April 17. Just 48 hours after Amelia had given birth, the singer was back on tour supporting Take That. The singer told the crowd at the time how he had been juggling nappies and late nights, but felt guilty he had been working away from home. He said: 'It's been the most craziest time. Cos obviously on one hand I've got this beautiful baby girl, my wife is at home looking after her with the nappies, and the sleepless nights. They captioned the sweet video: 'Bump's first cameo… here's a little BTS from a shoot we won't forget' 'And I'm on tour with Take That. I feel guilty!' Last month, Olly candidly confessed he broke down in tears after he was forced to leave her just two days after her birth. He admitted to the emotional toll the decision had on him months after when he realised he had never got to know his daughter as a baby. Speaking with new dad Mark Wright on their Heart Breakfast show, Olly confessed: 'It was really hard for me as I had to leave two days after the baby was born to go on tour with Take That.' He explained: 'I didn't really process it at the time and a few months later me and Amelia were chatting and I just broke down in tears as I never got a chance to actually get to know this little baby.' Supporting his pal amid his decision to leave his family for work commitments, Mark added: 'But you were doing it all for her future.' While touring with Take That, Olly raced home to Essex after gigs to spend time with Amelia and Madison. In the exclusive clip obtained by Daily Mail last April, Olly explained: 'But this week I've been home. 'I've done the nappies, I've done the late nights and I can't wait to stay on tour. 'I'm joking! Honestly, she is truly awesome. 'I never thought I'd be a dad, so I can't quite believe it. Pointing to his manhood, Olly shouted: 'It works! And genuinely I'm super, super proud. And to be on this tour, it's just topped it off. So what an amazing time for me right now.'

Leigh-Anne Pinnock sizzles in racy bikini top and hot pants as she storms the stage at Boardmasters Festival
Leigh-Anne Pinnock sent temperatures soaring as she delivered a show-stopping performance at Boardmasters Festival on Friday. The former Little Mix star, 32, commanded the stage in a daring red, green and black bikini-style top teamed with a fringed black mini skirt layered over tie-dye yellow hot pants. The singer, who is carving out a sizzling solo career, completed the eye-popping look with fingerless green gloves, bright red Puma trainers and strands of ribbon flowing from her outfit in the colours of the Jamaican flag. Clutching a bold red microphone, she strutted and danced energetically across the stage, whipping up the crowd with her fierce moves and commanding stage presence. With her trademark curly hair tumbling freely over her shoulders, Leigh-Anne oozed confidence as she struck powerful poses mid-song, keeping the audience captivated from start to finish. The OMG hitmaker has been gearing up to release brand-new music, after she revealed she had left record label Warner Music Group. Leigh-Anne signed with Warner as a solo artist in 2022 and released her EP, No Hard Feelings, the following year. But her solo career stalled after Warner 'wouldn't pay for a music video' for her last single after she reportedly 'failed to impress' with her other tracks. More than a year later, Leigh-Anne revealed she was returning to music this summer - but had gone independent. Posting on her TikTok, Leigh-Anne said: 'It's been a bit of a weird time, going through some stuff with my current label. It's a whole thing. 'I couldn't really say anything as well, so it seemed a bit "Where's Leigh-Anne? Where's the music? What's going on?" And I felt I couldn't really explain what was actually happening.' She explained: 'Obviously I left my label and I'm now with Virgin. I'm fully independent guys eek! Like honestly, it's been the most amazing thing foor me, I think, I feel like it needed to happen to be honest. 'You think I've been in this industry for how long now? What's the point doing it if I'm not doing it my way? It just doesn't make sense, so that's all positive now and I feel really excited and really good.' It comes after the singer looked every inch of the doting mum as she posed for a very sweet family photoshoot with husband Andre Gray and their two twins daughters. The singer posted a carousel of Instagram snaps during their lavish holiday, covering her daughters' faces with a green heart emoji. The family were captured looking joyful as the little ones, three, were playing around in the stunning park. Leigh-Anne and the footballer, also 33, couldn't keep their hands off one another as they put on a smitten display in one snap. The proud parents were then snapped holding hands with each one of the twin and giving them a gentle look. 'Did one of those cheesy family photoshoots on our hols girls of course loved every second,' she captioned her latest post.
