Sarzameen director opens up on Ibrahim's speech issue, reveals he got film because of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani
In the past, Ibrahim Ali Khan has candidly spoken about his speech impediment and hearing issues, which were caused due to a severe case of jaundice he experienced shortly after birth. Talking about Ibrahim's speech issue and his character's stutter in a recent chat with Indian Express, director Kayoze Irani shared, 'The speech issue was there in the film before Ibrahim was even a part of it. But I wanted the relatability to be there. I brought it out of him. Because the character needed to be vulnerable. In the non-aggressive scenes, I definitely wanted him to be vulnerable. So we designed the scenes around Ibrahim.'
The director also revealed how Ibrahim bagged Sarzameen, which was initially meant to mark his acting debut. Kayoze shared, 'With Ibrahim, I was on the set of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023). Ibrahim was an AD (Assistant Director). He was filling in for Ranveer Singh as they were setting up the shot. Karan sir and I both were sitting behind the monitor and we felt he's got a face for the camera. So we decided to launch him. We did an audition, readings, and a six-month workshop by Atul Mongia with him. That's how we brought him onboard.'
Before Nadaaniyan and Sarzameen, netizens witnessed a glimpse of Ibrahim's acting talent in a behind the scenes clip from Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023), where he was hilariously rejected as a prom date by Alia Bhatt as they recreated a scene from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001). New Delhi: Ibrahim Ali Khan's debut in Naadaniyan on March 7, 2025, was one of the most anticipated star kid introductions in recent times. The film failed to live up to the expectations, but somehow the first glimpse of Kayoze Irani's Sarzameen later took a chance of restoring it. Debut director Kayoze Irani spoke to NDTV about spotting Ibrahim Ali Khan on the sets of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani as an Assistant Director, and how it led to him casting the young lad in Sarzameen. Kayoze Irani says, "I was on the sets of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in Delhi, and we were sitting by the monitor. When we saw Ibrahim, we were struck by the thought that this boy has a face made for the camera, and we thought, let's give him a shot. We conducted extensive workshops with him, and that's how he came on board." He adds, "Ibrahim was facing the camera for the first time. We shot for Sarzameen before Nadaaniyan. We did about six months of workshops, and what worked for me, with Ibrahim, was that we were able to tap into Ibrahim as a person, and he brought that into Harman, the character." Plot In Sarzmeen, Ibrahim Ali Khan plays the role of Harman, a seemingly innocent child who grows up to be a militant. A complicated relationship with his father (Prithviraj Sukumaran) and a disturbed childhood drives his character to the farthest end of seeking vengeance. The story of Sarzameen revolves around Colonel Vijay Menon, who plays the role of a dedicated Indian Army officer who is committed to his duty in Kashmir, to the extent that he might choose his duty over family. He combats a personal crisis when his son Harman (Ibrahim Ali Khan) becomes radicalised by terrorists. The story then unravels to highlight the conflict between Vijay's responsibility towards his nation and his love for his son, particularly after he returns as a changed man.

Ibrahim Ali Khan got yelled at by Sarzameen director Kayoze Irani for being late to work: ‘I was aggressive, stopped talking to him'
The only piece of advice that actor Boman Irani gave his son, Kayoze, on the first day of production on the film Sarzameen, was to not lose his temper. Kayoze had worked as an assistant director on several projects previously, and was susceptible to getting angry on set. In an interview, he admitted that he yelled on a few occasions during Sarzameen, and had an altercation with Ibrahim Ali Khan that resulted in him shutting the young actor out entirely. Sarzameen was the first film that Ibrahim shot for, although the Netflix rom-com Nadaaniyan was the one that was first released. Both movies have been co-produced by Karan Johar. Appearing on Cyrus Broacha's podcast, Kayoze acknowledged the trolling that Ibrahim faced for his performance in Nadaaniyan, and claimed that the young actor was being praised for his work in Sarzameen. 'This role was a lot more suited to him. I was actually quite excited about his casting. We did six months of workshops; his first day of shoot was on Sarzameen. Ibrahim brought his own life experiences into the character. And the truth is, Ibrahim and me had the most to prove on this film. I wanted to prove that there is a star out there. I'm so happy that he's got such a positive reaction this time around.' 'I lost it once on him. I like punctuality. Once, I didn't talk to him all day. I sulked, but I think that was the best scene he did. When I was not talking to him is when he did his best scene. I lost it. This was in Mumbai, but we were shooting very far, in Vasai or something. I shouted a little bit. I can't repeat the language. I said, 'Next time you are late to the set…' And I stopped. I lost it. I was a little aggressive.' Kayoze said that even Ibrahim's 'harshest critics' will have to admit that he has a striking screen presence, and admitted that he knew there was work to be done on him before shooting could begin. 'That's why we gave ourselves six months,' he said. Sarzameen opened to negative reviews. Kayoze said that he is working on a comedy film next.
