Battle of the beauties: What really happened between Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai? Was there a rivalry?
In 1994, two Indian women made the country proud on global platforms —
Sushmita Sen
was crowned Miss Universe while
Aishwarya Rai
clinched the Miss World title. Since then, the two have often been pitted against each other, both during their pageant days and later in their film careers. Despite public fascination with the idea of a rivalry, both Sushmita and Aishwarya have maintained that no animosity ever existed between them.

Sen Breaks Silence on Relationship with Aishwarya
In a past interview with WildFilmsIndia, Sushmita Sen addressed longstanding speculations about her dynamic with Aishwarya. She stated that they were never close enough to have any sort of conflict, saying, 'We never had enough time to be enemies, rivals or friends.' She added that both were focused on their individual journeys and ambitions, with little time for distractions. According to Sushmita, 'We always wanted to be the best in our own ways — which we have proven to be.'
Sushmita also emphasized that any notion of rivalry existed more in the public imagination than in reality. 'People should keep one thing in mind — if we ever had any rivalry, it was in our own work,' she said, pointing out that both of them were working hard to build their careers from the ground up. She stressed that comparisons were unfair, especially when both were still evolving professionally. 'There is no such thing as rivalry. The sad part is that people don't understand that,' she remarked.

Maninee De Reflects on Pageant Days
Actor Maninee De, who competed alongside Sushmita and Aishwarya in the Miss India 1994 pageant, also shared her perspective. She recalled that the idea of rivalry was mostly fueled by the media. 'This was media-created,' she said, explaining that while Aishwarya had already gained attention as a model, Sushmita was the lesser-known contestant at the time. However, there was no hostility between the two. Maninee described both as gracious and dignified individuals even at a young age.
She went on to share a personal anecdote about how Sushmita inspired her to take part in the pageant. 'She told me I am very exotic and my USP is that I spoke very well,' Maninee revealed, crediting Sushmita with encouraging her to apply. Their bond extended beyond the contest, with Sushmita often reciting poetry to her late at night, considering Maninee someone who truly understood her writing.
Aishwarya's Warmth and Grace Remembered
Maninee also spoke fondly of her interactions with Aishwarya. During the pageant, she won the Miss Congeniality award, and Aishwarya personally told her she had voted for her, calling her 'genuinely the sweetest of the lot.' Years later, during a chance meeting at a film screening, Aishwarya greeted her with affection and even met her daughter warmly, further dismissing any rumors of discord.
Enduring Legacies Beyond Comparison
Both Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai went on to establish themselves in Bollywood. Aishwarya starred in acclaimed films such as Devdas, Taal, and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, and was last seen in Ponniyin Selvan II. Sushmita made her mark in movies like Biwi No.1 and Main Hoon Na, and recently appeared in the series Aarya and the film Taali. Despite constant comparisons, both have forged unique and successful paths.
While the public narrative often hinted at competition, those closest to the situation confirm there was only mutual respect and personal focus. In the end, both women continue to be celebrated for their contributions — not as rivals, but as icons in their own right.

Saru actress Anushka Merchande shares her heartfelt family tradition with her sisters on Yoga Day
On the occasion of International Yoga Day , actress Anushka Merchande, best known for her role as Anika in the television show Saru, reflected on a deeply personal and cherished tradition—Sunday morning yoga sessions with her sisters. Speaking about the ritual, Anushka shared, 'Every Sunday at sunrise, my sisters and I roll out our yoga mats — a ritual that started years ago and has become a tradition we deeply cherish. Between stretches, laughter, and quiet reflection, we reconnect — not just with ourselves, but with each other.' She fondly recalled how their yoga journey began at home, guided by online videos: 'I still remember our first session — following a YouTube video on our living room TV, confusing our lefts and rights, falling over more than we balanced.' Over time, the sisters transitioned from their living room to a nearby park, embracing nature as part of their practice. 'Barefoot on the grass under open skies, surrounded by trees and the sounds of nature, made the experience feel more peaceful,' Anushka said. 'It was also about feeling connected to ourselves, to each other, and the world around us.' On this Yoga Day, Anushka revealed their special plan: 'We'll begin with 12 rounds of Surya Namaskar, followed by a short gratitude meditation, and writing down one intention each — something we want to carry forward with love and mindfulness.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Febre entre os homens de 40 anos, estimula a vontade e energia Baixa na libido Saiba Mais Undo Anushka's portrayal of Anika in Saru has already struck a chord with audiences, and her words reflect the same sincerity and warmth she brings to her screen roles. ‘Maar na': Shubman Gill tells Rishabh Pant to hook bouncer for six, his reply: ‘Respect karna pada tagda'
Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant's stump mic chatter was as entertaining as their batting during the India vs England first Test at Headingley. In between their solid defence and attractive boundary that made England's bowling attack appear ordinary, Pant and Gill constantly chatted while standing at the striker's and the non-striker's positions. Sometimes, it was teasing each other, sometimes related to what the bowler was trying to do, and sometimes it was just pure fun. And all of that was in Hindi. India's Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill(Action Images via Reuters) They were so entertaining that they also caught the attention of legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who termed it a strategy to confuse the English fielders. Among many episodes between Gill and Pant during their mammoth 209-run partnership for the fourth wicket, Gill teasing Pant to go after Brydon Carse was perhaps the best. It happened in the first session of Day 2. The over number was 94. Carse was trying to test Pant's backfoot play by banging the ball in. In the fourth ball of that over, Carse bowled a well-directed bumper at Pant's body. The Indian keeper-batter ducked under it. As Carse was going back to his mark, Gill told Pant "maar na," which translates to "Hit ma, no." Pant generally likes to take on the short ball, but this one from Carse was a bit too short. His reply to Gill was pure gold. "Bada ball daal dia yaar. Respect karna pad gaya bohut tagdaa. (He bowled a good one, man! I had to give him a lot of respect)." Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill's remarkable 209-run partnership was the highlight of India's first innings in the opening Test against England. Resuming on 359-3, with Gill unbeaten on 127 and Pant on 65, the pair displayed a compelling mix of composure and aggression that pushed India firmly towards a commanding position before an unexpected collapse. Gill, captaining India for the first time after Rohit Sharma's retirement, played with maturity beyond his years. He brought up his highest Test score of 147 with elegant strokeplay, surpassing his previous best of 128. His innings, laced with 19 boundaries and a six, was a masterclass in timing and placement. His off-drive against Chris Woakes to reach the milestone was particularly memorable, showcasing his growing stature as a leader and batsman. At the other end, Pant unleashed his trademark attacking style. Resuming on 65, he brought up his seventh Test century—and fourth against England—in thrilling fashion, lofting Shoaib Bashir for a one-handed six. The celebration that followed, a somersault, was as energetic as his 134-run knock. His 146-ball innings featured 10 fours and four sixes and kept the scoreboard ticking briskly. Together, Gill and Pant added 209 runs in just 49 overs, steering India to 430-4 and seemingly toward a total in excess of 500. Their contrasting styles complemented each other perfectly: Gill anchored the innings with finesse while Pant injected momentum with his fearless hitting. However, the end of their partnership triggered a dramatic collapse, with India losing their final seven wickets for just 41 runs. Still, the stand between Gill and Pant stood out as a blend of flair and focus, a vital foundation in India's innings that showcased the next generation of Indian batting brilliance.
