Eagles running back Saquon Barkley declines invitation to join Trump's sports council
PHILADELPHIA — Saquon Barkley has declined an invitation to join President Donald Trump's council on sports, fitness, and nutrition, which is being revitalized under an executive order that also reestablishes the Presidential Fitness Test for American children.
Barkley, the 2,000-yard rusher for the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, was on a list of sports personalities that included golfers Bryson DeChambeau and Nelly Korda, WWE executive Paul 'Triple H' Levesque, football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor and retired New York Yankees great Mariano Rivera.
Barkley said Monday following Eagles' practice that he had actually declined the invitation.
'A couple months ago, it was brought to my team about the council,' Barkley said. 'So I'm not really too familiar with it. I felt like that I am going to be super busy. Me and my family thought it would probably be of best interest to not accept that. I was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned. I'm assuming it's something great, so I appreciate it but was a little shocked when my name was mentioned.'
Trump last week reestablished the Presidential Fitness Test for American children, a fixture of public schools for decades that gauged young people's health and athleticism with 1-mile runs, sit-ups and stretching exercises.
'This is a wonderful tradition, and we're bringing it back,' Trump said of the fitness test that began in 1966 but was phased out during the Obama administration.
The executive order also reinvigorated the national sports council that could have included Barkley.
Barkley won AP Offensive Player of the Year last season after rushing for 2,005 yards, eighth-best in NFL history, in his first season with the Eagles.
Barkley has golfed with Trump and former President Barack Obama over the last year and the running back attended the White House celebration of the champion Eagles while some teammates — notably star quarterback Jalen Hurts — skipped the ceremony.
Barkley visited Trump in April at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and caught a ride with the president to Washington on Air Force One and then to the White House on Marine One.
'He loved it,' Trump said then of Barkley's short flight on the presidential airplane. 'He's a great young guy and an incredible football player. Saquon had a season for the ages, running behind the most powerful offensive line in the NFL.'
Barkley, meanwhile, pushed back on social media criticism following the visit. He noted that he had already golfed with Obama, a Democrat.
'Maybe I just respect the office, not a hard concept to understand,' Barkley posted on X.

On Football: Cowboys can't afford to let Micah Parsons' contract dispute linger into the season
Jerry Jones is known for dragging contract negotiations so it's no surprise Micah Parsons is just the latest Dallas Cowboys star player to have to wait on a new deal. Dak Prescott had to play on the franchise tag in 2020 after being unable to reach agreement on an extension, and he didn't get another new deal last season until hours before the Week 1 opener. Jones eventually caved and made Prescott the highest-paid player in NFL history with an average of $60 million per year. CeeDee Lamb held out into late August last year following an All-Pro season before Jones gave him a four-year, $136 million deal. All-Pro guard Zack Martin held out of training camp in 2023 while waiting for a new contract. This is nothing new for Jones. Back when the Cowboys were America's Team, even Emmitt Smith couldn't get paid quickly. The Hall of Fame running back missed the first two games of the 1993 season because of a contract dispute. He eventually signed a $13.6 million deal — most for a running back at the time — after the Cowboys started 0-2 without him but they still ended up winning the Super Bowl. Jones mentioned that when training camp started. That's not a good sign that Parsons will get what he wants sooner than later. Jones operates on his own time and there's plenty of ego involved. He's been a unique owner since he bought the Cowboys in 1989 and named himself general manager. Hiring Jimmy Johnson to replace Tom Landry was Jones' best decision. Both men are in the Hall of Fame for it and the Cowboys won three Super Bowls under Jones. But they haven't reached an NFC championship game in 30 years and they won't get through a tough NFC East without Parsons, the two-time All-Pro edge rusher and generational talent. The Philadelphia Eagles are defending Super Bowl champions. The Washington Commanders faced the Eagles in the conference title game. Dallas has a big challenge trying to compete in the division and they'll need Parsons to have a chance. Jones hasn't even talked to his agent, David Mulugheta. Jones has said he had direct conversations with Parsons in the spring over a contract extension that would almost certainly make him the highest-paid defender in NFL history. By waiting for Myles Garrett (4 years, $160 million) and T.J. Watt (3 years, $123 million) to sign new contracts, Parsons is in line to make more than $41 million per year. The Cowboys waited to sign Prescott and were forced to give him more money than any other player because he was the next quarterback in line. Jones' patience has a negative impact on his checkbook. Parsons, who is a hold-in at camp, requested a trade last week. Jones blew it off. 'We have no intentions of trading Micah, and that's part of the negotiations,' Cowboys co-owner Stephen Jones told the team's website. 'That's just the nature of negotiations. I think any player that's holding out for a contract – I think I've read around the league where they've all requested to be traded. So that's part of it. We have no intention of trading Micah. He's right here in camp.' Business is business but there seems like there's some tension in this relationship that won't be erased until Jones and the Cowboys give in. Jerry Jones isn't certain Parsons will play in Week 1 against the Eagles. 'A big part of that is his decision. How would I know that?' he said. Parsons is scheduled to make $24 million in the final season of his five-year rookie contract and could be franchise tagged in 2026 without an extension. Prescott is confident a deal will get done because he's been through it. 'I can say from experience that it's just frustrating,' Prescott said. 'I hate that he's going through it, but as I've told him, keep handling things the way that you are, and I believe that he should be paid.' Longtime NFL super-agent Leigh Steinberg, who represents the Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes, also expressed confidence that Parsons will get his new deal. 'Despite the current friction and heightened public spotlight surrounding the Cowboys-Parsons contract deadlock, this situation will ultimately be resolved,' Steinberg told the AP. 'Micah Parsons is simply too valuable to the franchise – a generational talent who's irreplaceable on the field and central to the team's identity. The Cowboys, for all the noise, are ultimately pragmatic when it comes to retaining cornerstone players. How does the WNBA deal with sex-toy throwers? What to know about arrests and security

In the past week and a half, sex toys have been thrown on court during games in Atlanta on July 29, Chicago on Aug. 1, Los Angeles on Aug. 5 and Chicago again on Thursday night, with the most recent object hitting the court in the closing seconds of the Atlanta Dream's victory over the Sky. The sex toy that landed on the court in Los Angeles nearly hit Fever guard Sophie Cunningham during Indiana's game against the Sparks. Sex toys were also thrown at games in New York and Phoenix last Tuesday but didn't reach the court. Police say another toy was thrown at a game in Atlanta on Aug. 1, although it's unclear if that one reached the court. The distractions have created unexpected challenges for the league, the teams and the players, but also for arena security. Here's what to know. Are arrests being made? A man was arrested Saturday in College Park, Georgia, after he was accused of throwing a sex toy onto the court during the Atlanta Dream's July 29 matchup with the Golden State Valkyries, according to a police report. The report said he threw another sex toy during the Dream's Aug. 1 game against the Phoenix Mercury, but that instance did not seem to result in a delay of play. He is charged with disorderly conduct, criminal trespassing, public indecency and indecent exposure. All four charges are misdemeanors in the state of Georgia, meaning that if he is convicted, the punishment for each can be a fine of up to US$1,000 or jail time of up to 12 months. A misdemeanor for public indecency and indecent exposure may also require registration on the state's sex offender list. The report said the man told police 'this was supposed to be a joke and the joke (was) supposed to go viral.'` Another man in Phoenix was arrested after police say he threw a sex toy in the crowd at a Mercury game on Tuesday. Police say the 18-year-old pulled the sex toy from his sweater pocket and threw it toward seats in front of him, striking a spectator in the back. The man later told police it was a prank that had been trending on social media and that he bought the toy a day earlier to take to the game. He was later tackled by a volunteer at the arena who had witnessed the incident and began following him as the man tried to leave the arena. Police say the man was arrested on suspicion of assault, disorderly conduct and publicly displaying explicit sexual material. The New York Liberty told The Associated Press on Thursday night that there is an ongoing investigation into the throwing in New York and the team is cooperating with law enforcement. What difficulties do arena security face in stopping this? The types of sex toys being thrown onto the court generally do not include metal elements, meaning that arena metal detectors are not able to sense them. When carried on a spectator's body, they become even more difficult to detect. Arena security teams face challenges in catching these items, according to Ty Richmond, the president of the event services division at Allied Universal Security, a company that provides security services to certain NBA, WNBA, NFL, MLB and MLS arenas across the country. 'Not all stadiums are using a screening process that's consistent and can detect (the sex toys) because of what it would require — pat down searches, opening the bags, prohibiting bags,' he said. 'The conflict of expediency, of getting fans into the arena and into the venue, which is an important issue, and security and safety.' The limits of arena security make legal action one of the strongest deterrents for this kind of behaviour, Richmond said. 'The decision to prosecute and show examples of how people are being handled is very important,' he said. 'Without a doubt, I think it will make a difference. The application of it is important, and publicizing that is important.' There have not been any arrests made yet for the in Los Angeles and Chicago. In a statement to the AP, the Sparks said they are 'working with arena personnel to identify the individual responsible and ensure appropriate action is taken.' The WNBA has said that any spectators throwing objects onto the court will face a minimum one-year ban and prosecution from law enforcement. How is it affecting players? As the disturbances pile up, those on the court have become increasingly frustrated. 'Everyone is trying to make sure the W is not a joke and it's taken seriously, and then that happens,' Cunningham said on her podcast after nearly being hit by one of the sex toys on Tuesday. 'I'm like, 'How are we ever going to get taken seriously?'' No other professional sports leagues have faced sex toy disturbances like this. It has started a conversation online about the perpetrators' choices to throw them during games in a women's league and a league with a high-profile amount of lesbian and queer players. 'This has been going on for centuries, the sexualization of women. This is the latest version of that. It's not funny. It should not be the butt of jokes,' said Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve Thursday. 'The sexualization of women is what's used to hold women down, and this is no different.' Despite the criminal behaviour leading to arrests, at least one crypto-based predictions market is offering trades essentially allowing users to wager on whether sex toys will be thrown at future WNBA games. Players have also been sounding off on social media, echoing concerns about arena security protocols. Liberty forward Isabelle Harrison posted on X last week, saying 'ARENA SECURITY?! Hello??!
