Plea for one more overnight train between Thoothukudi and Chennai
The Thoothukudi District Passengers' Welfare Association has appealed to the General Manager, Southern Railway, to introduce one more overnight train to connect this coastal town with Chennai. In a memorandum, president of Thoothukudi District Passengers' Welfare Association M. Brammanayagams said Thoothukudi, which got train connectivity with Chennai 145 years ago, still has only one train, 'Pearlcity Express Train'. Since patronage for this section is overwhelming, the Southern Railways should introduce one more overnight train between Thoothukudi and Chennai. Moreover, a daytime train should also be operated from Thoothukudi to Chennai via Madurai and Tiruchi instead of the link train to Chennai. An early morning intercity express train should be introduced between Thoothukudi and Kollam via Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Shencottai and Punalur as it will be of great help to the people travelling to Kerala. Air-conditioned coaches should be added to the Thoothukudi – Palakkad Express Train on both directions and the Thoothukudi – Mettupalaayam Express Train should be operated thrice a day. The ongoing development works at Thoothukudi Keezhur railway station like extension of platform 1 and concreting of platforms 2 and 3 should be expedited, Mr. Brammanayagam said.

Passengers miss connection train; Southern Railway to pay Rs 10k compensation
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Southern Railway has been directed to pay Rs 10,000 compensation each to five Mookambika-bound travellers who missed the connection train from Mangalore due to the delayed arrival of the first train. The Thiruvananthapuram District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission also asked the railways to pay Rs 2,500 as costs. The complainants had booked tickets in the Maveli Express from Trivandrum Central Railway Station to Mangalore Central Railway Station to visit the Kollur Mookambika Temple. The scheduled boarding date was 10.08.2017 and arrival time at 8.05 hours next day. They also booked tickets on the Mangalore-Karwar Express to travel to Byndoor Station (Mookambika Road). The second train was scheduled to depart from Mangalore station on 11.08.2017 at 9 hours. According to the complainants, the Maveli Express reached the Mangalore Central Railway Station's outer at 8.20 hrs but was stopped there till the connection train in which they had to travel to Byndoor railway station left the central station. The complainants alleged that the train was halted in the outer though the central station had vacant platforms. Due to deficiency in service by the railways, the complainants said, they had to catch a bus for further journey resulting in monetary loss and mental agony. The railways submitted that the Maveli Express reached Mangalore station at 9.08 hrs. The allegation that Mangalore- Karwar Express is a connection train for Maveli Express is factually incorrect. Hence, the latter cannot be detained at the station until the arrival of Maveli Express. The Mangalore- Karwar Express left station at scheduled time of 9 hrs.

Southern Railway drops plan to cut sleeper coaches on Nellai, Podhigai Express after backlash in Tamil Nadu
CHENNAI: Following stiff opposition from passengers and several political parties, Southern Railway on Tuesday scrapped its proposal to reduce the number of sleeper coaches on the Chennai-Tirunelveli Nellai Express and the Chennai Egmore-Sengottai Podhigai Express. However, the revised coach compositions for other trains, including the Chennai-Coimbatore Cheran Express and Chennai-Mettupalayam Nilgiris Express, will proceed as planned. An order from the transportation branch of the Madurai railway division confirmed that the existing coach configurations for the Nellai and Podhigai Express trains — comprising 8 sleeper coaches, 5 AC three-tier coaches, 2 AC two-tier coaches, and 1 first-class AC coach — will remain unchanged. The earlier proposal had suggested reducing sleeper coaches from 8 to 7 and increasing the number of AC three-tier coaches from 5 to 6, which stands cancelled, revealed the order issued by the Senior Divisional Operational Manager of the Madurai division. On Tuesday, TNIE published a report highlighting how the proposed change would have reduced the availability of sleeper class berths while increasing the number of higher-fare AC berths. Earlier in the day PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss had strongly criticised the railways' decision to reduce the number of sleeper coaches.
