Man Utd face potential transfer nightmare as AC Milan threaten to abandon deal

Metro2 days ago
Manchester United could be facing a transfer nightmare with AC Milan threatening to abandon a deal for Rasmus Hojlund, according to reports.
The Red Devils want to offload Hojlund this summer and AC Milan have held talks with United to sign the striker on loan with an option to buy.
Hojlund is thought to be AC Milan's No.1 transfer target – but the Denmark international reportedly wants to stay and fight for his place at United.
Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport now report that AC Milan could walk away from negotiations in what would be a significant blow to United.
The Red Devils are walking somewhat of a financial tightrope – and need to sell players before they can focus on bringing more fresh faces to the club.

Hojlund is among the players who've been put up for sale after United signed RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko in the summer transfer window.
But La Gazzetta dello Sport claim that AC Milan's sporting director Igli Tare 'won't wait forever' for Hojlund to make a final decision on joining the club.
The outlet adds that if Hojlund hasn't made his mind up by August 19, then AC Milan will turn their attentions towards three alternative strikers.
The other strikers AC Milan are looking at include Juventus' Dusan Vlahovic, Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson and PSG's Goncalo Ramos.
Former AC Milan and Italy head coach Arrigo Sacchi has called out Hojlund for delaying a potential move to the Serie A side this summer.
'We're not talking about van Basten, nor are we talking about one of the strongest centre-forwards in Europe at the moment. He's a decent player, nothing more,' Sacchi told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
'I understand the desire of the Rossoneri directors given that there is a shortage of strikers. But it has to be one that wants to come to Italy, one that doesn't throw a tantrum. More Trending
'I don't understand his choice. If Milan calls you, you pack your bags and get on the first plane to Malpensa.
'Milan, in the world of football, is a mystical name. I, along with all the players who are brought in, would take a tour of the trophy room so that we understand where we have come.
'Of course, Manchester United is also a legendary team. But on the one hand, there is a club, Milan, which is offering you a permanent job, and on the other hand, there is a club that is doing everything to try and sell you. What would you choose?'
Hojlund has scored 26 goals across 95 games for United since he joined the club in a £72m deal from Atalanta in 2023.

Mikel Arteta leaves fans baffled with 'three year' Arsenal Premier League boast

Arsenal get their Premier League season underway against Manchester United on Sunday and will hope to finally win a title under Mikel Arteta after finishing third three times under the Spaniard Mike Arteta has already drawn the attention of Arsenal's naysayers after the Gunners boss made a baffling comment in his first press conference of the season. The north London side get the campaign underway with a clash against Manchester United on Sunday as Arteta and co once again target a league title. ‌ Arsenal have seen plenty of investment this summer and signed Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera and finally a striker in the shape of Viktor Gyokeres. Sporting director Andrea Berta has been busy in the transfer window and will hope his work has strengthened Arteta's hand. ‌ The Spanish coach has overseen three consecutive second-place finishes in the top-flight and agonisingly missed out on adding Arsenal's first Premier League title. And Arteta remains adamant he will keep working to deliver what is required at the Emirates. ‌ "Yeah, you keep digging, digging, digging and you have to be digging because one day the gold is going to be there. That's all the time. When I've been taught, when I've been educated and that's it," said Arteta. "For three seasons we've had more points than any other team in this league, which is incredible. That's how you have all the consistency. Now we have to do it in a season to have one more point or the same amount of points and more goals different than any other team. That's the objective." The issue with Arteta's hypothesis is that it's not exactly correct. Despite finishing above Manchester City last season, it is Pep Guardiola's side who have still tallied the most points in the last three seasons. City claimed 251 points, Arsenal 247 and Liverpool 233. "Factually incorrect," pointed out one fan, "Second again." "Its hurts to always fail," another added. "'We've had more points than any other team in this league'. Clearly not son, else you'd have three titles, no?" ‌ "Even though he has never reached the lofty height of 90 points, he speaks as if he has experienced a tremendous championship battle," noted a further rival. "Keep digging bro… might find yourself in championship and eventually win it," joked another fan. And with the same sentiment one supporter said: "Keep digging, one day you might end up in Chelsea 's trophy room… still looking for something you can actually win." Nevertheless, Arteta is keen to get the season underway. "I'm super excited, I can't wait. It's been a really productive pre-season. We've made such an evolution in the squad as well and we're ready to go," he said. "The mood of the place, the energy around it, the enthusiasm that the boys, the staff came with from day one, now we're going to do better, to keep improving as a team and to win. That's what drives my energy and that's why I'm so excited." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Man Utd vs Arsenal: Predicted lineups today and confirmed team news

Manchester United host Arsenal in a blockbuster clash on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season. It is building up to be a striker showdown at Old Trafford on Sunday with both sides investing heavily in a new centre forward this summer. Arsenal parted with £64million to prise Viktor Gyokeres away from Sporting CP having walked away from talks to sign Benjamin Sesko, who was thought to be the club's leading target earlier in the summer. It allowed United to enter the fray, winning the race to sign Sesko who turned down a move lucrative move to Newcastle United to seal his move to Old Trafford. Arsenal fans have already got a glimpse of their new no14, featuring in pre-season games against Tottenham, Villarreal and Athletic Club. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. While Kai Havertz has provided a good account of himself this summer having recovered from a hamstring injury, Gyokeres will surely be given the nod on Sunday. Sesko however is still to play for his new club, only joining training on Wednesday following his £73m move from RB Leipzig. Ruben Amorim may resist the temptation to throw his new striker straight in and may consider a role off the bench. Mason Mount started as a false nine to little success in United's final pre-season match against Fiorentina and with Rasmus Hojlund firmly out of the first-team picture as it stands, Sesko will be desperate to make an immediate impact. Joshua Zirkzee could be another option having also returned to training this week. Andre Onana is in a race to recover in time from the hamstring injury he suffered on the second day of pre-season training back in July. The Cameroon international missed every pre-season game with the issue with Altay Bayindir stepping in but while his long-term future at United is uncertain, Onana is hopeful of being available this weekend. Noussair Mazraoui has not featured since picking up a knock in United's first pre-season match against Leeds while Lisandro Martinez is still working his way back from a serious knee injury. Arsenal meanwhile have a relatively clean bill of health with Leandro Trossard expected to be available after picking up a minor knock in the win over Athletic Bilbao. Riccardo Calafiori and Havertz both featured in that game after shaking off knocks but Gabriel Jesus remains sidelined. We are backing Sesko to get the nod up front but Matheus Cunha or Bryan Mbeumo could also be handed a role through the middle, allowing Bruno Fernandes to take up a more advanced role. Arsenal's new starting XI pretty much picks itself – Noni Madueke will hope to force himself into the starting XI but Arteta may keep faith in Gabriel Martinelli for now. United vs Arsenal takes centre stage on Sunday 17 August with kick-off scheduled for 4:30pm. Ruben Amorim reveals alternative if Man Utd don't sign Carlos Baleba

Ruben Amorim has named Mason Mount as an option in central midfield if Manchester United fail to strengthen in the middle of the park. United have rebuilt their attack with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko arriving at Old Trafford this summer, along with young talent Diego Leon at left-back. But issues remain unresolved in midfield – an area of the pitch that caused United major problems last season. Questions remain over Casemiro's ability to withstand the pace of the Premier League after another draining campaign last term while Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte have seldom shown promise as a midfield duo. Toby Collyer has been given the green light to join West Brom on loan with Bruno Fernandes expected to get more games in a deeper role. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. United are eager to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton but could be priced out of a move this summer. The Seagulls value the 21-year-old at £100million and while the midfielder is thought to be keen on the move, any deal may have to wait until this time next year. While Sporting CP star Morten Hjulmand has been linked, there does not appear to a genuine alternative to Baleba in mind. In any case, Amorim is prepared to make do with what he has at his disposal – viewing Mount as another option. 'I'm really happy with our players, they are working really well, we have different players for that position, so we are prepared to win any game with our players,' Amorim told a press conference ahead of the Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sunday. 'Maybe Mason Mount is a player that can play in that position if we want something different. 'But then we are going to find out during the season. But we have players to cope and win games in the Premier League.' More Trending Mount has largely operated in an attacking midfield role for Chelsea, England and United. Amorim is a huge admirer of the 26-year-old who has endured an injury-hit spell in Manchester since arriving from Stamford Bridge in 2024. Mount picked up a hamstring injury early on in Amorim's tenue last year but returned late in the campaign, scoring twice in the Europa League semi-final win over Athletic Club.
