Outlander fans urged to watch 'one of the best fantasy films ever made' as it streams for free
Outlander fans are invited to watch the Scotland-based fantasty adventure film that is streaming for free.
A historical fantasy drama with a cult following is set to arrive on BBC iPlayer, and fans of Outlander will not want to miss this free streaming opportunity.
The film, titled Highlander, is a surreal action-adventure that tells the story of an age-old war between immortal warriors. The narrative weaves together past and present-day storylines, focusing on Connor MacLeod, a man born in the Scottish Highlands in the 16th century.
Christopher Lambert stars in the leading role, alongside Roxanne Hart, Clancy Brown, and James Bond legend Sean Connery.
Despite being a commercial flop upon its initial release, the film has since gained cult status and has inspired several sequels and television spin-offs.
Rotten Tomatoes provides the following synopsis: "When the mystical Russell Nash (Christopher Lambert) kills a man in a sword fight in a New York City parking lot, he leaves a sliver of an ancient weapon lodged in a car in the process.
"After brilliant forensics specialist Brenda Wyatt (Roxanne Hart) recovers evidence of the mysterious weapon, she and her partner, Lt. Frank Moran (Alan North), embark on an investigation of Nash that will land them in the middle of a dangerous, centuries-old feud between powerful immortals."
While parts of the film are set in 1980s New York, there are also flashbacks to the Scottish Highlands in 1536, where Connor fights against the rival Fraser clan as a warrior of the MacLeod clan, reports the Scottish Daily Express.
Outlander enthusiasts surely know the Fraser name well, as the series stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe as Jamie and Claire Fraser in the enchanting tale.
Similar to Highlander, Outlander traverses different eras, starting in 1946 post-World War II Britain and then travelling back to 1743 on the cusp of the Jacobite Rebellion in Scotland.
Decades on, Highlander maintains a 69% fresh rating from critics and a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, where viewers continue to discuss the film.
The Telegraph penned: "Made with such superstyle Highlander does have entertainment value but this can only be a one-off."
The Financial Times opined: "Close your brain to the illogicalities of the time-chopping structure and there is much to marvel at.
"A truly heroic stomp through time and space," the BBC added, with the Chicago Reader commenting: "Lambert, with his beetle brow, broken nose, and vaguely crossed eyes, remains an amiable oddball presence, and Sean Connery radiates charm and nobility in a bit as an elder immortal who shows Lambert the rules of the game."
Some critics were less impressed, as the Guardian wrote: "Even Gerry Fisher's camerawork can't convince me that this is other than the most inutterable tosh."
The New York Times expressed: "Since none of the characters makes sense even on the movie's own terms, Highlander keeps on exploding for almost two hours, with nothing at stake."
Empire Magazine offered a more measured approach, adding: "Don't go in expecting too much and you should be ok."
Fans have been sharing their heartfelt endorsements, with one writing: "Growing up there were many movies of action and adventure and dragons and sorcery and this movie took the fantasy genre for me as a child and expanded it into the future of possibilities."
Another fan, expressing admiration for Queen's contribution to the film's music, said: "An extraordinary cult classic movie that will endure for so many many generations. Not only with the cinema fans but also Queen fans."
A third admirer commented on the film's overall impact, commenting: "An excellent epic fantasy film with a great soundtrack by Queen and plenty of action. Not boring in anyway. One of the best films ever made with a nice Scottish Theme."
One more stated: "One of the greatest sci fi action movies of all time even the out dated effects work here and awesome story, excellent plot."
And yet another viewer praised the film enthusiastically, adding: "A fantastic film. Story, acting, score, an action. It has it all. Clancy Brown plays a fantastic villain one of the best performances to date. Highlander is a true classic."
Highlander will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer from May 9.

Teacher sacked over secret OnlyFans insists ‘I NEVER thought they'd catch me'.. leaving GMB's Susanna Reid speechless
TV host Susanna Reid was left speechless after interviewing a teacher who was sacked for having an OnlyFans account. The Good Morning Britain presenter had been quizzing Kirsty Buchan, who was banned from teaching after she was spotted on the adult platform by pupils. 5 5 5 Speaking to Susanna and co-host Richard Madeley, the 34-year-old admitted: "I didn't think I would be caught, I didn't think I would be famous." The mum-of-one, also known as Jessica Jackrabbit x, worked at Bannerman High School, in Glasgow, when she joined the site. But she was caught out when pupils stumbled across her account, where she rakes in tens of thousands of pounds each month for posting raunchy snaps. After the interview, Susanna said: "Thank you for coming in to talk to us this morning. "I can imagine that people will have strong views. It's good to meet you." And handing over to weather presenter Laura Tobin, Susanna quipped: "Let's have a look at weather now with Laura, who's all covered up in a field in Kent." A disciplinary hearing for the sacked teacher was told her profile was discovered by pupils in 2022 and reported to headteacher Seonaidh Black. Pictures of Ms Buchan, 34, "posing in lingerie" were handed over by shocked students. In her bio she admitted to being a "good teacher gone bad... really bad". The profile was also easily accessible, requiring no payment or sign up. Ms Buchan, who had originally been a pupil at the school before teaching there, did not attend the hearing. In her absence, the headteacher described the OnlyFans model as a "teacher who wanted to do a good job". One concerned mother had even contacted Ms Black and reported how her son left messages for Ms Buchan on her OnlyFans profile. 5

Gogglebox star reveals life-changing health diagnosis he's 'hidden for decades'
Former Gogglebox star Daniel Lustig-Webb has publicly shared that he is deaf in one ear after decades of hiding his health condition. The 50-year-old TV personality rose to fame during his five-year tenure on the hit Channel 4 reality series which he featured on with his ex-husband Stephen Webb from 2018 to 2023. Earlier this week he opened up to his 121,000 Instagram followers about the life-changing childhood diagnosis that has 'shaped his life'. 'I've been half deaf since I was a child,' he said in a new interview. He explained that he contracted mumps when he was younger causing an infection which ultimately led to 'complete and permanent hearing loss in one ear.' Before continuing to Scenemag: 'For years, I hid it. I didn't want people to see me as 'different' or less capable. At school, it was tough, I was often picked on and teachers told me I was 'thick' because I struggled to concentrate, not realising it was because I couldn't hear properly. 'It made me really insecure. I thought I was just failing.' He described trying to keep up in social situations 'exhausting' due to his condition and has at times been 'forced to pretend' he could hear what people were saying which took 'its toll'. 'I've had to learn to listen differently, and sometimes I just switch off,' the Hove-based hairdresser added. 'I feel ready to be open about it. At 50, I feel like it's finally time to stop hiding and to be proud of who I am,' he explained alongside his plans to learn sign language to connect with the wider community. 'Deafness isn't a weakness, it's part of me,' Daniel shared hoping to shed light on the 'isolation and frustration' that comes with being hard of hearing. 'It's part of millions of lives. And it should be talked about openly, without shame,' he continued. The latest figures from the Royal National Institute for Deaf People indicating upwards of 18 million adults across the UK are affected by hearing loss or tinnitus. As he enters a new decade he is 'learning to love and accept all parts of [himself]'. Fans have shared their support for Daniel in the comments on Instagram. 'You should never hide yourself you are a beautiful person inside and out,' jopurdy2 said. 'Be proud and loud, love and hugs,' shared. Earlier this year, Daniel opened up about the impact of his breakup with his ex, Stephen. The pair – who had been together for 11 years and married for six – announced their shock break-up in April 2024 but have remained in each other's lives as friends. More Trending In recent interview, however, Daniel revealed that he 'didn't see [the split] coming' and called the end of their relationship 'devastating' and 'traumatic'. Speaking on podcast Suddenly Single, he said: 'We were completely entwined for so long, with our businesses, the dogs, we were so close in everything we did. 'There was nothing underhand happening, no-one had slept with anyone else.' View More » In the end, their differences became too much with Daniel adding: 'Stephen was the complete opposite to me, and we'd say opposites attracted, but fundamentally that was our problem in the end.' Consecration review – creepy nuns deliver the classic moves of holy terror very effectively
This is the way the world ends, not with a bang but a wimple. In this well-crafted horror movie, a young woman called Grace (Jena Malone) finds herself up against a bunch of nuns who may or may not be trying to do something extremely dodgy with an unknown relic, and as with last year's Omen prequel, there's a nice line in casting here from the Ladybird Book of Horror Nuns. There's dotty young nun who pops up going 'peekaboo' (Eilidh Fisher), an arrogant mother superior (Janet Suzman), a hardliner weapon-of-Christ sort (Jolade Obasola), and the rather rarer spooky nun with one eye hidden behind an ominous white bandage (Alexandra Lewis). Their acting is uniformly excellent, as is that from Danny Huston, who plays a priest who introduces himself thusly: 'I'm Father Romero, I'm here from the Vatican,' which announces him as probably up to no good from the get-go. Grace arrives to identify the body of her brother (Steffan Cennydd), seemingly involved in a murder-suicide, has reasons of her own for being less than a fully paid-up God squad member, and while the reasons may not be much of a surprise if you've seen a few of these kinds of films, this is a very nicely put together example. Sure, it's purest hokum, but real pride has gone into crafting it.. Cocooning the treats of the storytelling in natural splendour, Consecration boasts some gorgeous location work; filmed on Skye and other scenic areas, there are rolling highlands, vertiginous cliff-tops, a tumbledown abbey on the crest of a hill – which you just have to accept as the site of the Knights of the Morning Star, an ancient dark force in the church. The world of the film feels real, a splendid argument for less green screen, more green fields – kudos to veteran British horror helmer Christopher Smith (Severance). Consecration is on digital platforms from 16 June.
