Cowboys and VP of player personnel Will McClay agree on multiyear extension

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys have agreed on a multiyear contract extension with vice president of player personnel Will McClay, who has overseen the club's draft process since 2014.
The deal announced Wednesday comes the same week the Cowboys introduced new coach Brian Schottenheimer, who replaced Mike McCarthy, and hired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and special teams coordinator Nick Sorensen.
McClay's success in the draft, which includes 15 players who have made at least one Pro Bowl, has led to interest over the years from other teams wanting to interview him for general manager openings.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has held the GM title since buying the club in 1989, and McClay has said frequently he had no desire to leave the storied franchise.
The 58-year-old McClay has been with the Cowboys since 2002, when he was a scout while also on the coaching staff of the Dallas Desperados of the Arena Football League. He was the AFL team's head coach for five seasons.
McClay was promoted to VP of personnel in 2017. Among the picks in his tenure of running the draft are six-time All-Pro right guard Zack Martin, two-time All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons and star receiver CeeDee Lamb. All were first-round picks. Franchise quarterback Dak Prescott was a fourth-round choice in 2016.

Odell Beckham Jr. Sparks Steelers Rumors With Aaron Rodgers Comments

The team addressed that need by acquiring two-time Pro Bowl receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks and Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith from the Miami Dolphins, but it created another hole when it traded George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys back in early May. Pittsburgh's WR depth chart behind Metcalf leaves much to be desired. Roman Wilson, Calvin Austin III, Robert Woods, and Scotty Miller — Pittsburgh's presumed No. 2-5 receivers — logged a combined 61 catches, 810 yards, and four touchdowns last season, and with quarterback Aaron Rodgers taking over under center, the Steelers are rumored to still be in the market for an upgrade at receiver. During a recent appearance on the "Club Random" podcast with Ball Maher, former Giants, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams, and Miami Dolphins WR Odell Beckham Jr. hinted that he could potentially be on the verge of signing with the Steelers. "Why don't you join the Steelers, that'd be great because he's on the Steelers now," Maher asked. "I won't say that it's not a possibility, and I won't say that I haven't had any communications," Beckham Jr. responded. "... I'm not done, I'll tell you that." "I was actually supposed to be drafted to the Steelers. That was the meeting that I had when I was like, 'OK, I'm going to the Steelers,' and the Giants ended up taking me at 12 and the Steelers had the 16th pick, maybe, I think they took Ryan Shazier int hat draft." A three-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, Beckham Jr. has been ravaged by injuries over the last five years. He missed nine games in 2020, three in 2021, three in 2023, eight in 2024, and the entire 2022 season with a series of ailments including a lower lumbar issue, two torn ACLs, a shoulder sprain, a hip bruise, and an ankle sprain. Beckham Jr., who's currently a free agent, totaled just nine catches for 55 yards with the Dolphins last season. With the Steelers looking to add to their WR room before their Week 1 matchup against the New York Jets, it's possible Beckham Jr.'s phone could be ringing soon. Last week, the Cowboys made the expected move to start Milton over Prescott, who was sidelined in street clothes for the first week of the preseason. As Milton was in the midst of his matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, the young veteran ended up suffering a shoulder injury late in the game. He likely didn't have a ton of reps left, but the Cowboys pulled him out prematurely. Eagles' Landon Dickerson serves beers at practice while recovering from knee surgery

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Landon Dickerson played bartender and served cold ones for the Super Bowl champion Eagles with the injured offensive lineman's career temporarily on ice. The Eagles can't wait for Dickerson to resume his day job. Dickerson passed around beers Thursday at the end of a joint practice with the Cleveland Browns — with a brace on his right knee following meniscus surgery that will keep the three-time Pro Bowl lineman sidelined at least through the end of training camp. Dickerson was injured at the end of Sunday's open practice at Lincoln Financial Field. There is no set timetable for his return, and Brett Toth took first-team snaps at left guard this week at practice. Toth likely will start for the Eagles when they play their second preseason game Saturday against the Browns. 'Whatever they ask me to do, I'm going to step to the plate and give it the best I got,' Toth said. 'Hopefully I can perform to the standard that was before me.' Beyond that, there are no guarantees. The Eagles remain hopeful Dickerson could return for the season opener when the Eagles raise their championship banner on Sept. 4 against Dallas. 'Don't have to name any starters or any backups at any position,' coach Nick Sirianni said. 'Brett's done a nice job and I like the depth that we have at that position and I know we have options there, but you asked about Brett, I think Brett's doing a really good job and he's got a lot of versatility.' Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson remained confident that Toth could handle the spot but was relieved that Dickerson wasn't necessarily expected to remain sidelined deep into the season. 'It was alarming but I'm glad we got a good-case scenario,' Johnson said. 'Make no mistake, Landon's one of the, if not, the best guard in football.' Toth, who played at Army, has had three stints with the Eagles and spent a bulk of that time on the practice squad. 'H's a really smart individual, really good with the detail of the game,' Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo said. 'He understands a lot of positions, which is great to have a guy like that that can line up in multiple spots and be able to step in if something happens. So I think that's the biggest thing he brings and I think he's been in the system for a while.' ___ AP NFL:
