Lily James to star in Subversion

Lily James has joined the cast of Subversion.
The 36-year-old actress will star alongside Chris Hemsworth in the thriller that has been described as "Die Hard on a submarine".
The story centres on a once-promising naval commander (Hemsworth) who is blackmailed by a cartel-like organisation into piloting a dangerous submarine carrying illegal goods across international waters.
He is thrust into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse with a Coast Guard officer (James) in pursuit and must get past blockades and survive perilous threats from both inside and outside the submarine.
The film is being directed by Patrick Vollrath for Amazon MGM and is being produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura for di Bonaventura Pictures alongside Stephen Shafer and Greg Cohen.
Production gets underway in September in Australia.
Lily recently revealed that she wants to take on "unlikely roles".
She features in the new movie Relay with Riz Ahmed and Sam Worthington and took the part because she is eager to challenge herself professionally.
Lily told The Hollywood Reporter: "Honestly, I was so excited to work with [director] David Mackenzie and Riz that I almost would've done any old thing that they put in front of me.
"That being said, you love to find work that's surprising and characters that take you in a direction you didn't anticipate. And particularly at this point in my career, I want to keep pushing myself to play unlikely roles, roles that surprise me, and have something to get my teeth into. So that [unconventionality] was definitely what was very appealing about this role and story."
The Downton Abbey star recalled how she was impressed by the script for Relay and hopes that audiences are similarly surprised by the thriller's plot.
Lily said: "Relay felt like this really gripping, dark thriller that exposes the world of whistleblowers and the idea of this greater control and always being watched. It felt really surprising, and I was thrilled to get to work with such a unique filmmaker in David Mackenzie. His movies feel so cinematic and grounded and bold and original."
The actress explained how she managed to develop strong chemistry with Riz, despite the fact that the pair barely filmed together.
She said: "Riz is also one of the most exciting actors out there, especially when you see what he's able to convey with no dialogue in the first 20 minutes of the movie.
"The connection we were able to build despite our characters very rarely being in the same room together was a real challenge. And when I watched the movie for the first time at TIFF on the big screen, I was like, 'Wow, it's incredible that there's this great electricity between these two characters when they barely meet.' So it was quite a sleight of hand that David pulled that off in terms of filmmaking."

Lily Allen recalls being bullied for having 'poor hygiene' by an ex-partner

Lily Allen was bullied for her "poor hygiene" by an ex-partner. The Smile singer - who split from Stranger Things actor husband David Harbour in 2024, after four years of marriage - has revealed she faced "abuse" over her uncleanliness by a past boyfriend. Without revealing their identity, she told friend Miquita Oliver on their Miss Me? podcast: 'It was somebody I was in a relationship with who would do it to me, and I don't think that it was real. 'I think that it was like a form of bullying and abuse, it was a horrible one. 'And as bullying forms of abuse go, it's a really horrible one.' She continued: 'Yeah, it was like done on purpose to make me feel self-conscious and s*** about myself. And make them feel powerful.' On a recent episode of the podcast, Lily admitted she "can't remember" how many abortions she's had. The 40-year-old singer revealed during a conversation about birth control that she used to get pregnant "all the time". Speaking about contraception, Lily shared: "I just remember I have an IUD [contraceptive coil] now. "I think I'm on my third maybe fourth and I just remember before that it was a complete disaster area. Yeah, I'd get pregnant all the time." She subsequently discussed her experience of abortions, admitting she can't remember how many she's actually had. Singing to the tune of Frank Sinatra's My Way, she said: "Abortions I've had a few ... but then again ... I can't remember exactly how many." Lily added: "I can't remember. I think maybe like, I want to say four or five." The British star revealed that one of her ex-partners actually paid for her to get an abortion and, at the time, she considered it to be a "romantic" gesture. She shared: "I remember once getting pregnant and the man paying for my abortion, and me thinking it was so romantic!" Miquita then said: "I actually think that is romantic!" However, Lily quickly rubbished that suggestion, observing that kids "are a lot more expensive". The LDN hitmaker - who has daughters Ethel, 13, and Marnie, 11, with ex-husband Sam Cooper - said: "No, I don't think it's generous or romantic. Think about that investment, like that's how much is it ... 500 quid? Kids are a lot more expensive."

Unknown actor is spitting image of JFK Jr. in show

A relatively-unknown actor set to portray John F. Kennedy Jr in a new TV series is the spitting image of the late American icon in new photos from set. Paul Kelly, who has signed on to star in Ryan Murphy's upcoming American Love Story series, could be seen shirtless filming scenes in New York this week. The Hollywood newcomer, who has limited experience in theatre and modelling, was said to have beaten out thousands of actors to score the role of the '90s heart-throb, and photos of him in character certainly show why. American Love Story will chronicle the whirlwind romance and 'It couple' evolution of JFK Jr. — the son of former US President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jackie Kennedy — and his fashion publicist wife Carolyn Bessette (played by Sarah Pidgeon). Australian actress Naomi Watts is set to star as Jackie Kennedy in the show, while Grace Gummer will play Caroline Kennedy. In real life, JKF Jr. met Bessette in 1992 when she was hired to give him a clothing fitting on behalf of designer Calvin Klein. Their union generated widespread media attention, much to the discomfort of Bessette, who struggled with accusations she was exploiting the relationship for fame. Kennedy and Bessette secretly married in Georgia in 1996. Upon their return to Manhattan from their honeymoon, the couple were met with a swarm of the world's press at their apartment. 'Getting married is a big adjustment for us, and for a private citizen like Carolyn even more so,' Kennedy told the pack of reporters. 'I ask you to give her all the privacy and room you can.' Three years later, Kennedy, then 38, and Bessette, 33, tragically died in a plane crash alongside Bessette's sister Lauren, 34, in July 1999. Kennedy, who was flying his Piper Saratoga aircraft after receiving his license the previous year, had departed from New Jersey en route to Massachusetts for the wedding of his cousin, Rory Kennedy. The couple intended to drop Lauren off at Martha's Vineyard as their first stop, and while Kennedy checked in with the nearby control tower, the plane was reported missing after failing to arrive on schedule. It triggered a frantic search party, with debris soon recovered from the Atlantic Ocean. Navy divers recovered three bodies from the ocean floor 'near and under' the wreckage, according to a statement issued by Admiral Richard M. Larrabee of the Coast Guard at the time. The National Transportation Safety Board ultimately determined that pilot error was the probable cause of the crash. An autopsy determined the victims died upon impact. Kennedy Jr. was just three years old when his father, the 35th US president, was assassinated in 1963.
