IN the world of press photography there are legends – and then there is Arthur Edwards.
Our royal photographer has been on The Sun's staff for 50 years, and in that time he has become a household name for his brilliant pictures.

And to mark his incredible career, Arthur, who is still working at the age of 84, was last night presented with the well-deserved Lifetime Achievement prize at the annual Press Awards.
He received the honour for a feat in national newspaper history that is unlikely ever to be repeated.
In half a century working for Britain's favourite newspaper, lorry driver's son Arthur has visited 120 countries to take photos – not only of the royals, but also many of the world's best-known faces.
Today he shares some of his favourite pictures – a tiny fraction of the thousands he has taken for readers of The Sun since he joined the staff in December 1974.
Lady Diana Spencer, 1981
Probably my most famous Diana picture came about because I knew that the girl who would marry Prince Charles was a nursery assistant.
But I didn't know where she worked, so I went to three pre-schools in West London before I came across the Young England Kindergarten in Pimlico.

I knocked on the door and asked the principal: 'Does Lady Diana Spencer work here?' When she said yes, I asked if Diana would pose for a photograph for The Sun.
Diana agreed, but she wanted to have two of the children with her.
Suddenly the sun came out. With the help of God's light, an ordinary photo became a fabulous picture.
Margaret Thatcher and her cat, 1978
I was sent to Flood Street in Chelsea, where Mrs Thatcher lived when she was leader of the Opposition.
Prince Harry & Meghan make money trashing the Royals - why should we pay for his security? | Royal Exclusive Show
It was the Sunday before the 1978 Tory Conference and The Sun's Editor asked if I could get a picture of Mrs T writing her speech.

She was known as 'Thatcher the Milk Snatcher', but the Iron Lady showed her soft side in 1978 – as Arthur snapped her sharing a quiet moment and a saucer of milk with a cat

She looked so young back then and happily posed for a photo. But when she was seeing me off later, a cat jumped up on the wall.
I saw the soft side of our future Prime Minister – who would become known as the Iron Lady – when she almost purred: 'Kitty, you want your milk.'
Despite being nicknamed Thatcher the Milk Snatcher when she was Education Secretary and ended free school milk for children, she happily poured some into a saucer for the cat.
It made a couple of brilliant pictures.
David Beckham getting his OBE, 2003
I have photographed David many times, and he has always been a superstar.
Nothing is too much trouble for him.

When he received his OBE from the late Queen, I asked his wife Victoria to smile.
But she never does, and she looked at me as if I was asking her for a thousand pounds.
So David just kissed her on the nose, which I thought was lovely, and it made a great picture.
Sir Paul McCartney, 2001
He was promoting some scarves that his wife Linda had designed.
But the photo call at Kew Gardens was so chaotic that he walked away.

Back then, The Sun was starting to print colour pages, and I was desperate for a bright photo that would get into the paper.
So I waited outside the main pavilion until he came out, and I said: 'Excuse me, Sir Paul.'
He replied: 'Call me Macca.'
When he realised what I wanted, he pulled a lemon out of his pocket and posed happily for this very colourful picture.
Donald Trump, 2016
During his first campaign for the US presidency in 2016, he was at his Turnberry golf course in Scotland.
I tried to get a photo that was different, so I took him with a copy of that day's Sun.

I asked him to take his hat off but he said no, adding that his hair wasn't good, and he would not do it.
On the plane home, I said to my colleague, The Sun's Chief Feature Writer Oliver Harvey: 'I don't think he's got a prayer in the election.'
How wrong can you be?
Prince Charles and Ronald Reagan, 1981
I was in Wellington, New Zealand, at the start of a world tour with Prince Charles when we heard the shocking news that US President Ronald Reagan had been shot.
The royal tour was due to end in Washington DC, and after the assassination attempt, we assumed that leg would be cancelled.

But by the time we had visited Australia and Hawaii, President Reagan had recovered, and his first official meeting was with the prince at the White House.
They were sitting by the fireplace and I asked them both to stand up. Reagan, who was still frail, could not believe what I'd asked.
But Charles stood up and said: 'The British press – they are so persistent.'
Prince Philip, the Queen and Zara Phillips in carriage, 1984
Every year Philip competed at the Royal Windsor Horse Show.
The Queen and their granddaughter Zara are on his carriage.

Philip's biggest fan was his wife, who suffered every fault and every mistake he made – but when he won, she always cheered the loudest.
Harry and the hand mark, 2015
This is the moment he got his revenge on me for revealing during New Zealand's breakfast TV that he was losing his hair.

Harry's purple handed artwork
We were visiting a youth club where the youngsters asked him to do a hand print on the wall in purple paint.
He did – then placed his hand firmly on my head.
Prince Charles with Tom Jones and Lionel Richie, 2019
I seem to have been taking pictures of Tom Jones all my life, from his early days in Wales to last year's D-Day celebrations in Normandy.
Although he is quite old now, like Elvis, Sir Tom has never lost that fabulous voice.

Lionel Richie is a great friend of the now King Charles. I photographed him at the Coronation concert at Windsor Castle, but I love this picture of the three of them, which I took in Barbados.
Brian May on Buckingham Palace roof, 2002
Queen guitarist playing the National Anthem on the palace roof to open Her Majesty's Golden Jubilee concert. Genius.
Not many people bothered to photograph it because there was a star-studded line-up to come, including Cliff Richard, Ozzy Osbourne and Paul McCartney.

Afterwards, Brian asked if he could use my picture of him finishing in triumph – playing the guitar that his dad had made for him – on his social media.
Naturally I said yes, because he had done such a brilliant job under immense pressure.
Later, Brian invited me to tea and we became quite good friends.
Tony and Cherie Blair, 2005
I went along to Downing Street with our political editor Trevor Kavanagh who was interviewing the Prime Minister in the beautiful garden.
15
Cherie Blair asked for a photo with Tony — Arthur said, 'Give him a hug'
His wife Cherie asked if they could have a picture together? I said 'give him a hug'.
They loved the photo so much the Blairs gave a signed copy to every visitor to No10. I've got a signed copy of it at home.
Mother Teresa, 1980
Prince Charles went to visit Mother Teresa in Calcutta and pray with her, which of course we couldn't photograph.
15
Of all his rich and famoous subjects, Arthur says Mother Theresa was the most humble, compassionate person
But I photographed her these orphans who had been abandoned on the streets and this wonderful woman, who is now a saint, took them in.
Of all the famous people I've photographed, she was the most humble, compassionate person. I am so lucky to have met her.
Princess Anne and Gorbachev, 1980
I have been to the Kremlin a few times, including once when I photographer Diana Ross there.

Jac Jossa posts sad song with lyrics about ‘not wanting to be seen' after Dan's texts to Christine McGuinness revealed
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) JACQUELINE Jossa appeared to share her feelings about husband Dan Osborne being comforted by Christine McGuinness during their marriage breakdowns. The EastEnders actress shared a downbeat song on social media after The Sun revealed their hotel meet and flirty nickname. The lyrics she used were: "And I don't want the world to see me." It comes after we told of Dan's raucous nights out with newly single Christine while Dan was still building bridges with Jac over previous cheating claims. A pal told The Sun: 'Dan and Christine have known each other for years. 'Their friendship goes as far back as 2019, when Jac was heading Down Under to the I'm A Celeb jungle, when they had a brilliant night out at a fund-raising gala in London. 'They stayed in touch sporadically and would bump into each other at events and their messages got pretty flirty. 'Some were seen by mutual friends. 'She would call him 'D' in texts and it became an open secret among their circles. 'There is no suggestion anything sexual happened, but it's fair to say there was a spark between them.' Our source said the pair met at London's The Hoxton hotel in March 2023 — a year after Christine called time with Paddy, 51. How Christine McGuinness & Dan Osborne 'comforted each other' amid marriage breakdowns, had hotel meet & flirty nickname And the following month, she cheered him on at a celebrity football match in Cheshire. They also partied together at a restaurant called Habbibi in Leeds. Dan moved out of the family home briefly earlier this year as their marriage hit the rocks once again. But they jetted off on a make or break holiday and looked to be patching things up. Their relationship has suffered countless cheating allegations over the years. In 2019, Dan confessed publicly to having made 'mistakes'. He said: 'I've done things I shouldn't have done.' And Jac said she had "given him hell" over the allegations.

David Beckham reaction to knighthood joke in front of King Charles says it all
David Beckham and his wife Victoria are reportedly set to be given knighthoods in King Charles' Birthday Honours List next week, with Sir Rod Stewart's brutal joke seemingly coming true Sir Rod Stewart's light-hearted prediction about David Beckham's getting a knighthood - made right in front of King Charles - looks to be coming true. Reports have emerged that Beckham is set to receive a knighthood in the King's upcoming Birthday Honours. The former England footballer had previously been considered for the merit several times, but was never included on the final list. In 2017, Beckham's apparent disappointment at being overlooked became public when a trove of contentious emails - allegedly from him - were leaked. Bearing that history in mind, Stewart, who was knighted in 2016 for his contributions to music and philanthropy, made a playful jab at Beckham during an event they attended alongside the British monarch. During the award presentation at a ceremony for 'The King's Foundation', Stewart quipped in front of the King: "I am also wonderfully honoured to be a knight, and David, yours is coming soon." Beckham, amused, was seen smiling and shaking his head, taking the joke in good spirits - even in the King's presence. Now, new reports indicate that Stewart's prediction was accurate. According to The Sun, Beckham will officially become a 'Sir' next week, while Victoria Beckham is expected to be styled as "Lady Beckham". The 50-year-old was named an ambassador to the King's Foundation last year, further solidifying his relationship with the royal family. Recent public moments suggest a friendly rapport between Beckham and the King. At the Chelsea Flower Show last month, the King asked Beckham: "You got it, didn't you?" referring to a birthday gift. Beckham responded: "It was incredible, thank you. It was very kind." Beyond his footballing achievements in England - 115 caps for the Three Lions, plus various trophy-laden stints at Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain - Beckham has made a mark as a football executive, co-founding Inter Miami in MLS, home to Lionel Messi. He has also championed numerous charitable causes, particularly through UNICEF, and was awarded an OBE in 2003. However, it has taken over two decades for that to be elevated to knighthood. His prospects took a hit in 2017 following the publication of controversial emails allegedly written by him. One message reportedly said he "didn't care about being knighted," and another read: "It's a disgrace to be honest and if I was American I would of [sic] got something like this 10 years ago." Beckham later claimed some of the messages had been tampered with. A friend told the Mirror at the time: "To be honest, he does feel that he has given so much to his country... you don't really mean it. "While he was frustrated in those emails, he was over it the moment he sent them. Getting the knighthood is not what his work is about. He doesn't care if he gets a knighthood or not." Typically, honours recipients are notified weeks in advance, so Beckham and his wife may already know of the honour. You can buy Princess Diana's iconic outfits at a Beverly Hills live auction this month
Along with being the People's Princess and a devoted humanitarian, Diana, Princess of Wales was a fashion icon for the ages. The late, great royal was as known for her fabulous formal and enviable jewel collection as she was for her casual-cool street looks: think Harvard crewnecks over athleisure bike shorts and oversized menswear blazers with riding boots and baseball caps. Lady Di has a closet that most people would pay good money for—and you can do just that as the largest live auction of the princess's clothes comes to Beverly Hills later this month. Entitled " Princess Diana's Style & A Royal Collection," the auction will take place on Thursday, June 26 at The Peninsula Beverly Hills beginning at 10am PDT in person, as well as online. Hosted by Julien's Auctions, the event will feature 300 garments and artifacts from the beloved public figure, inviting bidders "to step beyond the palace gates and experience a more intimate perspective of royal life—to understand who they were, what they cherished, and how they hoped to be seen." Along with dresses (taffeta Elizabeth Emmanuel evening gowns, lilac Versace skirt suits), shoes (custom Jimmy Choos, two-tone Chanel pumps), accessories (lambskin Dior handbags, Prada leather totes) and more, the sale will also feature items once worn by Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen Mother, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and other members of the royal family. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Julien's Auctions (@juliens_auctions) It's not the first time that items from Princess Diana's wardrobe have been put up for auction in the greater Los Angeles area—a velvet Jacques Azagury dress worn by Lady Di was sold at a 2023 Julie's Auctions event in Hollywood for a whopping $1,143,000, as reported by CBS News. It goes without saying that the sartorial selections at this month's auction will likely pull in similarly hefty prices: A Bellville Sassoon floral day dress worn by Diana Spencer in the late '80s and early '90s currently has a potential selling price of $200,000 to $300,000 on the auction site. The proceeds do go to a good cause, though, with a portion of the money raised benefitting Muscular Dystrophy UK, an organization that funds research, provides care and advocates for those living with the muscle-weakening disease.
