Brazil requests consultations at WTO over Trump's tariffs
Mr. Trump has directly tied the 50% tariff on many imported Brazilian goods to the judicial situation of his embattled ally, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently under house arrest.
"The United States has flagrantly violated key commitments the country has agreed upon at the WTO, such as the principle of the most favored nation and tariff ceilings negotiated at that organisation,' Brazil's foreign ministry said in a statement.
The most favoured nation principle is a cornerstone of Geneva-based WTO, whose aim is to get countries to respect trade agreements. The principle directs its members to treat each other equally in trade. WTO panels are set if no agreement is reached in disputes between members.
'Brazil's government reiterates its availability for negotiation and hopes these consultations contribute to a solution to the matter,' the Brazilian foreign office said.
The U.S. government has not made comments about Brazil's move.
WTO needs revamp: Lula
Earlier, a Brazilian government official told The Associated Press that the case could drag on and there's no guarantee of success. The official, who wasn't authorised to discuss the matter publicly, spoke on condition of anonymity.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has repeatedly said that the trade body needs a revamp to be enabled to mediate in conflicts.
Brazil's government estimates that 35.9% of the country's goods shipped to the American market have been affected. That is about 4% of Brazil's total exports.
Mr. Trump directly tied the 50% tariff on imported Brazilian goods to the judicial situation of his embattled ally, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently under house arrest.
Last month, Bolsonaro was ordered to wear an electronic ankle monitor and to obey a curfew while the proceedings are underway. Lula is yet to speak about the move.
On Tuesday, the leftist leader said he wouldn't call Mr. Trump to talk about trade 'because he doesn't want to' speak about it. Lula said that he might instead 'invite him to attend (November's climate summit) COP in Belem.'

A bizarre string of fake applications in Bihar amid electoral roll revision drive continues, with the latest being an online request for a residence certificate in the name of US President Donald Trump. Authorities have rejected all such applications and lodged FIRs. In Trump's case, the application submitted on July 29 claimed he was a resident of Hasanpur village in Mohiuddin Nagar block, with a passport-style photo and even his actual parents' names — Frederick Christ Trump and Mary Anne MacLeod — listed, reported news agency PTI. The district administration rejected the application on August 4 and called the act a 'diabolical attempt' to disrupt the ongoing SIR drive. 'It appears there is a diabolical attempt to negatively impact the special intensive revision of electoral rolls which is underway as per the instructions of the Election Commission,' the administration said in a statement, as cited by PTI. The Samastipur district administration confirmed that a case has been registered at the Cyber Police Station for appropriate investigation. 'In view of the seriousness of the offence, a case has been lodged at the Cyber police station, Samastipur, for appropriate investigation and action,' the statement added. Opposition leaders slam electoral roll revision The incident has drawn strong reactions from the Opposition. Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala shared a news clip on social media that falsely claimed a certificate had been issued to the Trump application. 'This is the biggest proof that electoral roll revision in Bihar is a fraud, aimed at stealing votes. The Congress and Rahul Gandhi are fighting to thwart this design. Keeping quiet in such a situation is a crime. Let us all raise our voices and become watchdogs of democracy,' Surjewala said. The administration clarified, saying, 'The certificate has never been issued. Somebody has deliberately made such an application and it was rejected during scrutiny. An FIR has also been lodged. The guilty will not be spared,' the response read. Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra also criticised the Election Commission, mocking the process, she shared a video on 'X'. 'An exercise which the Election Commission has put its stamp on, which says it is comprehensive and it is accurate. Why don't you decide for yourself? We have in the district of Samastipur, an online application in the name of Donald Trump,' Moitra said. She further said the ongoing SIR was 'nothing but an exercise in mass disenfranchisement', claiming 65 lakh voters had been deleted without proper discussion. 'These forms are including mythical or animal photos and clearly made up names and addresses. The Lord Ram application lists Raja Dashrath and Maa Kaushalya as the parents... So this is the state of the SIR application,' Moitra added, referring to similar fake entries found in Khagaria district. (With PTI inputs)

Spacetech startup Xovian raises $2.5 million to build radio frequency satellites
Bengaluru-based spacetech startup Xovian Aerospace has raised $2.5 million in pre-seed funding to build artificial intelligence (AI)-native radio frequency (RF) satellite infrastructure. The round was led by Piper Serica and Turbostart, with participation from Inflection Point Ventures (IPV) and support from Eaglewings startup said unlike conventional satellites that rely on optical data and miss critical, obscured, or covert activity, Xovian 's AI-native RF satellites can capture and decode dynamic signals to provide data to various cofounder, Ankit Bhateja, told ET that there is a gap in the satellite imagery market , noting that industries like maritime, aviation, and defence needed real-time action tracking rather than just change detection provided through images.'RF data collected from maritime vessels, aircraft, and military sites will be fused into an AI-powered decision intelligence platform to offer actionable intelligence,' he startup has completed ground testing of its technology and is planning space trials by the end of the year using ISRO's PSLV fourth stage, which is designated for in-orbit scientific experiments. Xovian aims to deploy a constellation of over 10 satellites by 2027 to provide global, 24/7 radio frequency said the startup is in discussions for pilot runs with about six customers across Southeast Asia and the Middle East, with three companies in maritime, oil and gas, and weather forecasting already agreeing to onboard.'Our vertically integrated architecture ensures low latency, high fidelity, and complete control from space to insights. Amber to open copper laminate plant in Mysuru for Rs 800 crore

The investment will be Rs 800 crore to Rs 900 crore. The company is assessing the feasibility," one of the sources said. Amber Enterprises did not respond to ET's queries till press time company is already investing Rs 3,200 crore in an electronics manufacturing plant near the upcoming Noida International Airport at Jewar. Spread over 16 acres, this will manufacture high density interfaces and substances. The company intends to set up manufacturing units for printed circuit board ( PCB ) assembly, home appliances and consumer electronics here from laptops, IT hardware and semiconductors. The construction of the plant is yet to Group's subsidiary Ascent Circuits is also investing Rs 990 crore to set up a PCB manufacturing facility in Hosur , Tamil Nadu. This will produce a wide range of PCBs from single sided to complex multi-layer and specialty circuits, lighting and appliances. The company hopes to operationalise the plant in the first quarter of 2026. The plant will be spread over 12.37 acres. It will be next to Ascend Circuits, which the Amber Group ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) launched the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme in April. This initiative is designed to boost the domestic production of electronic components and sub-assemblies, aiming to position India as a key player in the global electronics value scheme offers a range of financial incentives to attract both global and domestic investments in the sector. It provides financial incentives linked to turnover, capital expenditure and incentives are applicable to several categories of electronic components like sub-assembly, bare component, selected bare component, and supply chain ecosystem and production auxiliary tools.
