Record-breaking ridership
The Namma Metro hit a new milestone on Monday, clocking its highest-ever single-day ridership - just a day after the city's long-anticipated Yellow Line began operations.
According to figures released by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), a total of 10,48,031 commuters rode the metro network that day - marking a record across all active lines.
Here's the breakdown:
– Purple Line (Line 1): 4,51,816 passengers
– Green Line (Line 2): 2,91,677 passengers
– Yellow Line (Line 3): 52,215 passengers on its first full day
– Interchange stations usage: 2,52,323 commuters switched between lines

Long-weekend spike and commuter excitement
The launch was followed by a long weekend, with Independence Day falling on Friday, August 15, Krishna Janmashtami on Saturday, August 16, followed by Sunday. In this regard, several Bengaluru residents planned quick weekend trips and getaways to popular nearby sites or their native towns.
This amplified the rush at the Yellow Line metro as both daily commuters and leisure travellers flocked to experience the new corridor.
The back story behind the Yellow Line
Spanning 19.143 km, the fully elevated Yellow Line connects RV Road in Jayanagar to Bommasandra, cutting through key zones like Electronic City. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 10 and began serving the public on August 11.
Built at an estimated cost of ₹7,600 - 7,610 crore and spanning 16 stations, the line runs with three trainsets at 25‑minute intervals for now, with plans to ramp up frequency as more trains arrive in the coming months.

Uttar Pradesh's temple towns of Mathura and Vrindavan transformed into a virtual fortress, with thousands of police personnel deployed across the cities as lakhs of devotees poured to celebrate Shri Krishna Janmashtami. The authorities stepped up vigilance to ensure smooth and safe celebrations in the entire braj area. To maintain law and order, district authorities divided the city in four zones and 18 sectors, deploying more than 5,000 police officers and personnel, news agency PTI reported. More than 300 CCTV cameras have been installed in and around the famous temples. Additional security arrangements have been made at the ShriKrishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadheesh Temple and Banke Bihari Temple. Entry of all heavy vehicles into Mathura has been banned, and vehicle movement on routes leading to the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi temple has been significantly restricted due to heavy crowds, officials said. Social media activity is under strict watch, and the inner area of the Janmasthan temple has been designated a red zone with extra police presence. The yellow and green zones around it are manned by plain-clothed personnel, including women officers. Barricades have been set up at multiple points, where police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) teams are screening visitors to prevent the entry of unwanted elements, they said. Entry to the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple is now through the northern gate (Govind Nagar side), while the main gate is being used for exit. Mobile phones, key rings, wristwatches, and any electronic devices are strictly prohibited inside. Devotees have been advised not to carry items like shoes, bags, matches, lighters or umbrellas to the temple, and to leave them safely at their accommodation to avoid difficulties during the exit, which will be from a different point. To assist pilgrims, police have launched a website to provide information on temples, routes, restrictions and other guidelines. Railways have extended services and added temporary halts to accommodate the influx of devotees arriving from Delhi, Bhopal and other cities. Several trains will run to Mathura until August 18. Chhath Ghat, Yamuna cruise service: CM announces plans to make Delhi tourism hub
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) Developing a 12-km-long 'Chhath Ghat', Yamuna cruise service and a tourism circuit are some of the major plans of the Rekha Gupta government to boost tourism in Delhi. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday announced the construction of the Chhath Ghat along the Yamuna, which will be one of the largest riverfront spaces in the country and is expected to welcome lakhs of devotees during Chhath Puja and other major events. To further revitalise the riverfront, regular Yamuna Aarti will also be organised, she said. The Delhi CM made these announcements while speaking at an Independence Day celebration, according to an official statement. The government will soon launch a comprehensive tourism circuit linking Delhi's most significant heritage landmarks, enabling visitors to experience the city's cultural journey through a seamless and well-curated route. This initiative will integrate historic forts, monuments, museums and cultural centres into a tourism experience that would reflect Delhi's past and the present. Plans are also underway to introduce a state-of-the-art Yamuna cruise service, offering tourists a scenic journey through the city's cultural and spiritual heart, she said. She said that the capital will not only preserve its historic grandeur but also embrace modern infrastructure to attract both domestic and international visitors. 'These tourism projects will not only strengthen our economy but also give every visitor a deeper, more soulful connection to our capital," she said. Gupta also spoke about her vision to make Delhi a global hub for tourism, education and healthcare and emphasised that both the government's efforts and citizens' involvement were needed to transform Delhi. '…this change will only be possible with your support. I have two appeals to every Delhiite: First, plant a tree in the name of your living or late mother. Second, let us give Delhi freedom from garbage. Until 15 August 2026, let us pledge not to litter on roads or in public places, and work together for a clean, beautiful city," she said. At the event, she also accused the previous government of depriving Delhi residents of the benefits of the Ayushman scheme. She said her government implemented it on the very first day after taking the oath. To strengthen the healthcare infrastructure, a target of 1,100 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs has been set, out of which 166 have already been completed, the CM said. Additionally, in August, five major hospital expansion projects will be inaugurated, adding 1,300 new beds, new OPDs and state-of-the-art medical equipment, Gupta highlighted. To address the shortage of medical machines in hospitals, 150 dialysis machines, 20 CT scan machines, and 12 MRI machines have been installed. New medical superintendents have been appointed in 28 hospitals, and 1,500 nurses have been given permanent appointments. Further, she said that Delhi's hospitals have been connected to the Hospital Information Management System (HIMS), enabling patients to book appointments online and access facilities like digital health records and a unique health ID. The three-day conclave, which began here on Thursday evening, is being organised by the Kerala Travel Mart (KTM) Society in association with the state tourism department. Billa said Kerala stood to benefit greatly from the sector's growth due to its inherent advantages. The summit has attracted over 675 buyers, including 65 from abroad, representing countries such as the UAE, UK, USA, Germany, Australia, and Brazil. Seventy-five exhibition stalls have been set up for sellers.
