Latvia joins UN Security Council for first time
Latvia was elected on June 3 to the United Nations Security Council for the first time in its history. Along with four other countries – Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Liberia – Latvia will serve a two-year term, beginning in January 2026, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. Reacting to the vote, Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze called it a "historic day for Latvia." "We are honored by the trust placed in us and ready to take on this responsibility to defend the rules-based international order," she wrote on the exception of Latvia – which is taking a seat on the council for the first time – all the elected countries have previously served. The newly elected countries will take the place of Algeria, Guyana, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia, whose terms will end in December 2025. They will join the five non-permanent members that were elected last year – Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia. The UN Security Council is the main UN body responsible for maintaining international peace and security. It is composed of 15 members, including five permanent members – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The permanent members hold veto power. Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Kremlin has repeatedly used its veto power to block resolutions concerning its actions in Ukraine. Latvia, a vocal critic of Russia, has consistently pushed for stronger Western support for Ukraine. The Baltic nation has been a steadfast ally of Ukraine – it recently delivered 1,500 combat drones to Ukraine and has committed providing military support at the level of 0.25% of its GDP every has also urged the European Union to adopt tougher measures against Russia, including an EU-wide ban on issuing visas to Russian citizens. Santa Ono rejected to lead University of Florida after GOP backlash
June 3 (UPI) -- Dr. Santa Ono, the former president at the University of Michigan, was rejected Tuesday as the next president at the University of Florida amid backlash from Republicans over his earlier support of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Tuesday's decision by the 17-member Board of Governors comes one week after UF's Board of Trustees unanimously approved Ono as the finalist. Ono was on track to become one of the highest paid public university presidents in the country. He was due to sign a five-year contract with a base salary of $1.5 million and incentives to earn as much as $15 million over the life of the deal. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who signed the 2023 bill banning DEI initiatives in public colleges, delivered a lukewarm response when Ono became the presidential pick, saying Ono's statements made him "cringe." Other Republicans, including Sen. Rick Scott and Reps. Byron Donalds and Greg Steube expressed outrage. "The UF Board of Trustees has made a grave mistake," Steube wrote in a post last week. "Dr. Ono gave it his best 'college try' walking back his woke past, claiming he's now 'evolved.' But I'm not sold. This role is too important to gamble on convenient conversions." Republican state Rep. Jimmy Patronis also questioned the presidential search committee's decision to make Ono the sole finalist. "UF sets the benchmark for education nationwide. There's too much smoke with Santa Ono. We need a leader, not a DEI acolyte. Leave the Ann Arbor thinking in Ann Arbor," Patronis wrote on X. During questioning for the role, Ono stated he believed DEI programs do more harm than good. He said he closed the University of Michigan's DEI offices in March and vowed DEI would not return to Florida's campus, if he were president. "The fact is some of my past remarks about DEI do not reflect what I believe, and that evolution did not take place overnight and it was shaped over a year and a half of thinking, discussions, listening to faculty, staff and students and their thoughts on the DEI program," Ono said. Ono, who was criticized for allowing an encampment of pro-Palestinian protesters to remain at the University of Michigan for a month, vowed last week during questioning to fight anti-Semitism at the University of Florida. "Let me be very clear: based on my experience, I believe that anti-Semitism is not just one form of hatred among many," Ono said. "It is a uniquely virulent and persistent threat, especially on college campuses today."

Editor's Note: Video aired in 2023, after police arrested multiple people in connection to the armed robbery at Crispin Auto. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Nearly two years after the crime occurred, a woman has pleaded guilty for her role in an armed robbery at an Urbana dealership in 2023. On June 7, 2023, a Crispin Auto employee was robbed at gunpoint and a car was stolen. The next day multiple people were arrested in a McLean County town. Police officials said the car they were driving in was stolen from an Urbana dealership. Michaella Campbell pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery on Monday. She was ordered to serve 48 months of probation, 180 days in the Champaign County Correctional Center (with credit for 145 days previously served) and 100 hours of public service work. If Cook County approves, the probation will be served in their jurisdiction. WCIA previously reported that surveillance video obtained after the aggravated robbery shows the incident started with a test drive involving an employee and two White women. When the three returned to Crispin Auto, two Black men were recorded on surveillance footage running up to the car as the employee was getting out. One pointed a gun to the back of the employee's head and shoved her out of the way. Seconds later, the same employee was pepper sprayed by one of the women before she got in the car with the other suspects and drove away. Third defendant in U of I pro-Palestine protest pleads guilty to misdemeanor Three other people were arrested alongside Campbell, according to the Urbana Police Department. This included Michael Roberts, Deandre Young and an unnamed female juvenile. Roberts and Young previously pleaded guilty, in June and December of 2024 respectively, to aggravated robbery. They each received 48 months of probation, and a 180-day jail sentence. Roberts received 366 days credited for time served, while Young received 545 days credited for time served.
