New Chinese car brands unveil models including cheaper version of Range Rover Evoque

Independent25-04-2025
New Chinese car brands Omoda and Jaecoo – part of China's Chery automotive group – have unveiled a new model each at the Shanghai Motor Show, just a year after their launch in the UK.
Jaecoo, the more premium of the two brands, has unveiled the new Jaecoo 5 – a battery electric vehicle that will also be available as a petrol model.
The Jaecoo 5 looks like a scaled down version of the Jaecoo 7, a car with a striking resemblance to the Range Rover Velar. So it's no surprise that the car looks very much like the Velar's smaller sibling, the Range Rover Evoque.
While the look of the Jaecoo 5 might be like an Evoque, the price won't be – we'd expect it to be around the £35,000 mark. That puts it slightly above the price of the Omoda 5, with which the new Jaecoo shares its tech.
That tech sharing means we can expect a 61kWh battery and a range of around 250 miles, making it competitive against some similarly priced rivals, although behind the likes of the new Skoda Elroq and newly crowned World Car of the Year, the Kia EV3.
As with the Omoda 5, the Jaecoo 5 is also expected to be available with a 1.6-litre petrol engine with a hybrid also possible in due course. Our guess is that the petrol Jaecoo will cost around £27,450 – putting it between the Omoda 5 petrol and cheapest Jaecoo 7 model.
Although the styling of the Jaecoo 5 is very similar to the Jaecoo 7, the front end is slightly more aerodynamic making it look even more like a Range Rover. Inside, the look is very generic with a portrait-orientated touchscreen sat above twin wireless charging pads on the centre console. A second digital display sits in front of the driver.
Following a very similar theme, the new Omoda 7 is bigger than the Omoda 5 and shares its tech with the Jaecoo 7. That means a plug-in hybrid system that Omoda calls intelligent super-hybrid technology with a small battery and 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine for a claimed total range of 745 miles on a full tank and full charge.
Design-wise, the Omoda 7 looks very much like a slightly stretched version of the Omoda 5, but with additional LED lighting at the front, a more pronounced kick up of the window line towards the back at the side, and a longer rear overhang for a bigger boot.
We'd expect the Omoda 7 to be priced just below the Jaecoo 7 that comes with the SHS (Super-Hybrid System) so a starting price of around £32,500.
Both the new Jaecoo 5 and Omoda 7 will be in showrooms in August, but they'll be beaten by a new flagship Omoda model that wasn't at the Shanghai Motor Show.
The Omoda 9 is already shown on Omoda's website with a starting price of £44,990 for a model that also uses the SHS plug-in hybrid system. Little else is known about the new car other than the price, its claim of 93 miles of EV range, its massive 660-litre boot capacity, 4.7 metre length and 700 mile-plus total range. It can be ordered now in a choice of five colours and is set to arrive before the other newcomers in June of this year.

Isn't that just the sweetest little border collie? Our day has instantly been improved after seeing its happy little face. Unfortunately, we were then forced to look at the face of the new Jaecoo E5. Day ruined. Seriously, what is going on with the design of this thing? It looks like a Range Rover Evoque was redrawn using only a ruler and then uploaded to a computer using 1970s spec CAD software. Advertisement - Page continues below Jaecoo says this is its 'compact, urban friendly SUV' so it's smaller than the current 7 and will be on sale in the UK very shortly, with first deliveries scheduled for October. Where the 7 is available in petrol or hybrid forms though, this new little'un will be offered as the internal combustion-engined 5 or the all-electric E5. Does look slightly more acceptable with a proper grille up front, doesn't it? Anyway, we now know pricing and specs for both the petrol-powered version and the EV. The standard 5 will get a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine with 145bhp and a seven-speed dual-clutch auto, while the E5 will house a 61.1kWh battery for 248 miles of range and a 204bhp electric motor for a 0-62mph time of 7.7 seconds. And yes, Omoda (which, like Jaecoo, is also a Chery brand) already has small crossovers named the 5 and E5. This isn't confusing at all. Inside we're told both cars get a 'digital-first cabin' with a 13.2in portrait touchscreen and a 'Hi JAECOO' voice assistant. The electric one also gets a 'Pet Mode' hence the image above. There will be 'Pure' and 'Luxury' trims, with the entry level versions kicking off at £24,505 for the petrol engine and £27,505 for the aesthetically challenged EV. All-electric Range Rover Evoque lookalike for just £27,505

New Chinese brand Jaecoo has taken the UK by storm in 2025 delivering over 10,000 of its new Jaecoo 7 SUVs already this year. The Range Rover Velar lookalike has gone down a storm with buyers who have fallen for its good looks, efficient plug-in hybrid powertrain and – most of all – its value for money. Next up in the UK this October is the smaller, all-electric Jaecoo E5 that promises more of the same. First shown at the Shanghai Motor Show in April this year, the E5 follows the same styling themes with more than a hint of Range Rover Evoque about it. Although smaller than the Jaecoo 7, the E5 offers even better value. Just £27,505 gets you the entry Pure model with a six-speaker Sony audio system, adaptive cruise control, a panoramic camera system and a 13.2-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and 'Hi Jaecoo' voice control. Moving up to Luxury costs you a still very reasonable £30,505 and adds a panoramic sunroof, wireless mobile phone charging, heated and ventilated electrically adjustable front seats, multi-coloured ambient lighting, and an eight-speaker Sony stereo. Both models are powered by a 61.1kWh battery feeding a 204bhp electric motor, getting the E5 from 0 to 62mph in 7.7 seconds. Jaecoo claims a maximum range for the E5 of 248 miles, while charging at speeds up to 80kW might not be class leading these days, but it still means a 30 to 80 per cent charge should take around 27 minutes. Both models also get V2L (Vehicle to Load) capability, meaning you can power household appliances from the car via a three-pin plug. Jaecoo also says there are 35 interior storage spaces, while the boot is an impressive 480 litres that can grow to 1,180 litres with the seats down. The E5 is dog friendly, too, with a 'Pet Mode' that keeps the cabin cool for pets when the car is parked, while there is also a range of Jaecoo-branded pet accessories available. Jaecoo also claims that the E5 has been developed specifically for UK roads, hopefully answering some of the criticisms levelled at the E5's sister car, the Omoda E5, with which it shares many of its EV components. Jaecoo, along with Omoda, is owned by Chinese car maker Chery, which has also decided to bring its own-brand cars to the UK starting with the cheerily-named Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8. And like those cars, the Jaecoo E5 will come with a standard seven-year warranty with eight years cover for the battery. As with the Jaecoo 7, a petrol Jaecoo 5 model will follow the electrified model in due course.

New Jaecoo E5 is a Range Rover lookalike with a very attractive price

Meet the new Jaecoo E5: the latest compact electric SUV to arrive on our shores, and the first EV from China's much more affordable alternative to Land Rover. As such, prices start from £27,505, significantly undercutting rivals like the Ford Puma Gen-E and Kia EV3. The E5 is powered by a 61.1kWh battery and 204bhp front-mounted electric motor, which deliver an official range of up to 248 miles – more than the Ford, which is good for 233 miles at most from a single charge; meanwhile, the 0-62mph sprint should take 7.7 seconds. The Jaecoo's 80kW maximum charging speed is behind the curve, but still sufficient for a 30 to 80 per cent top-up in 27 minutes. If you're after a rugged-looking petrol-powered SUV, the larger Jaecoo 7 (a rival for the MINI Countryman and BMW X1) is available through the Auto Express Find a Car service from £30,115 or just over £250 per month thanks to our latest lease deals. Advertisement - Article continues below Even though the E5 is an electric 'urban‑friendly SUV', Jaecoo claims it's up to venturing off the beaten track; its approach angle of 20 degrees and departure angle of 30 degrees are nearly identical to the Jeep Avenger's. Plus every model features a 540‑degree panoramic camera system. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Vehicle-to-load (V2L) charging capability means owners can use the car's large battery to power a laptop or camping equipment. Plus there's a 'Pet Mode', like in Teslas and the new Kia EV5, which keeps the cabin cool and secure if you have to quickly pop into a shop or are perhaps setting up tents. Inside, all Jaecoo E5s feature a 12.3-inch portrait touchscreen, which will be used to control almost every function because there are hardly any buttons. But there supposedly more than 35 storage spaces dotted around the cabin, plus a 480‑litre boot that expands to 1,180 litres when the rear seats are folded down. The E5 is available in two trim levels: Pure and Luxury. Standard kit includes the big touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a six-speaker Sony stereo, six-way manually adjustable front seats, a suite of 19 driver-assistance systems including adaptive cruise control, and a seven-year/100,000-mile warranty. Upgrading to Luxury spec brings the price up to £30,505, and adds a panoramic sunroof, a wireless charging pad, heated and ventilated front seats, ambient lighting and an eight-speaker Sony sound system.
