Penang fishermen receive new boats under SIMP scheme
GEORGE TOWN: Six fishermen from southern Penang have been given new boats and engines under the Social Impact Management Plan (SIMP) scheme, marking a significant improvement in their livelihoods.
For Hashimi Hamzah, 50, from Sungai Batu, the new boat is an early birthday gift ahead of his 50th birthday on July 3.
His previous boat was destroyed in a storm six months ago, forcing him to work as a crew member on others' boats.
'The new boat is an unexpected blessing. It means a lot to me because all this while I had to work on other people's boats as a crew to earn a living. Now, I can go out to sea on my own again.
'My nets are ready, and with this new boat, I can fish farther, faster, and more safely,' he said in a statement issued by Silicon Island Development Sdn Bhd.
Other recipients include Hamdan Bakar, 59, from Teluk Kumbar, who expressed gratitude for the upgrade. His new boat allows him to cover a wider fishing area, increasing his income.
'If it were up to my own means, I might only be able to afford a 40-horsepower engine. This new boat and engine are a huge relief.
'Now I can fish with peace of mind,' said Hamdan, who has been fishing solo since he was young.
See Bak Chooi, 65, from Gertak Sanggul, shared similar sentiments, saying the new boat restored his confidence to return to sea after his old vessel became unsafe.
'This assistance proves the state government's concern for the plight of traditional fishermen. Getting a new boat feels like getting a new car.
'Now I can go further to catch fish and prawns, it's a big difference compared to my old boat,' he said.
The SIMP scheme aims to support fishermen by providing better equipment, ensuring safer and more productive fishing trips.

With four lanes in each direction, the bridge is designed to meet future transportation needs and support the development of the man-made island, which will house the proposed Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) depot and Green Tech Park. The bridge is also a key component of the Pan Island Link 2A (PIL2A), a strategic initiative aimed at improving connectivity between Silicon Island and the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who disclosed this yesterday, said the contract for the bridge project had been awarded and construction will begin this month. He said phase one is targeted for completion by mid-2027 to support the opening of Silicon Island's first operational factory, with full commissioning expected at the end of the following year. 'In the meantime, a temporary steel bridge has been built to provide access for construction and infrastructure works on Silicon Island, which now spans 64.75ha of the intended 931ha. Phase One of the island with a total of 64.75ha reclaimed to date. — CHAN BOON KAI/The Star, Silicon Island Development Sdn Bhd 'It helps expedite the mobilisation of machinery and workers who used boats before this. This is a model development,' Chow said during a visit to the Silicon Island project site. The visit included a preview of the designated areas for the Mutiara Line LRT depot and Green Tech Park, which are gradually taking shape. Chow said work on the LRT project will begin once the Notice to Proceed is issued to SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd (SRS) in several weeks' time. Chow also said a new community facility, Medan Selera Matang, was being built in Permatang Damar Laut overlooking Silicon Island. It will feature a village community management council hall, fishermen's one-stop service centre, food stalls, restaurants and storage sheds for fishermen. For the initial water supply needs of Silicon Island, a suction tank and pump house will be built. The total construction cost for the community facilities, pump house and suction tank is estimated at RM36mil.

Stability issue hits barge at Silicon Island project site; no injuries reported
GEORGE TOWN: A barge operating at the sand rehandling station of the Penang Silicon Island project site experienced a stability issue this morning. Fortunately, all 11 crew members on board, comprising two Malaysians, one Chinese national and eight Indonesian nationals, were successfully rescued without injury. Silicon Island Development Sdn Bhd chairman Datuk Seri Farizan Darus said initial assessments indicated that operational factors, including a possible discharge pipe issue, had affected the hopper load during offloading. "Our emergency response team was immediately deployed to the site to manage the situation. "This includes implementing precautionary measures to contain any potential oil spillage," he said in a statement this evening. Farizan said the Marine Department, the Department of Environment (DOE), and other relevant agencies were promptly notified of the incident. "The project developer is fully cooperating with the relevant authorities, and Penang Infrastructure Corporation Sdn Bhd will continue to monitor the situation closely," he said. Earlier today, it was reported that reclamation works for the Penang Silicon Island project were progressing smoothly, with some 60ha reclaimed as of last month, since work commenced in September 2023. State Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the reclaimed area accounted for around 6.5 per cent of the total 920ha designated for Silicon Island.
