MCA reminds BN leaders to focus on coalition's survival, revival instead of relying on others

The Star01-05-2025
PETALING JAYA: MCA reminds Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders to focus on the coalition's survival and revival instead of diverting attention or relying excessively on other parties for political continuity.
MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng said recent remarks by MCA secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon about Barisan's lack of a clear direction were grounded in genuine concern for the coalition's future, not intended to assign blame.
'His statement reflects the aspirations of MCA's grassroots. As the party's secretary-general, it is Chong's duty to convey these voices to fellow component parties,' said the Tanjung Piai MP in a statement Thursday (May 1).
Wee's comments came in response to criticism by Umno supreme council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi, who had accused MCA of faulting BN without self-reflection.
Puad was responding to Chong who had recently urged MCA to take charge of its destiny if Barisan continued to drag its feet over a clear direction for the coalition.
'We sympathise with MCA. However, MCA should not blame BN for this. MCA must ask itself: why has support for the party from the Chinese community declined?
"Why did MCA win only two (parliamentary) seats in the 15th General Election (GE15)? This has nothing to do with Barisan,' Puad said in a Facebook post.
Wee also reiterated that MCA's stance is that Barisan must define a clear direction as the coalition remains the ideal choice for Malaysians.
'All of Barisan component parties, including Umno, MCA and MIC must rebuild their confidence in the coalition and work diligently towards its recovery, rather than continuing to rely on external parties, which ultimately weakens Barisan strength and principles.'
Wee also added that MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, in several of his speeches during party gatherings and celebrations, had repeatedly stressed that MCA's current priority is to strengthen the party and restore Barisan's position.
This, he said, demonstrated MCA's continued loyalty to its role as a component party and its commitment to working with coalition partners to regain public support.
'MCA firmly believes that Barisan's multiracial power-sharing model, and its practice of moderate, inclusive politics, remains the most realistic and effective approach for governing a plural society. This approach not only preserves racial harmony and social stability but also drives national development and prosperity. In reality, any governing political coalition would inevitably adopt the coalition's model,' he said.
MCA Youth deputy chief Mike Chong has also called on Puad to engage in self-reflection and return to the right path upholding the spirit of Barisan rather than relying on others purely for personal survival.
He added that Puad's remarks appeared to lean in favour of Pakatan Harapan, rather than aiming to restore Barisan, and risk dismantling the "house" that has been built since before the country's independence.
'This is why MCA secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon stressed that Barisan lacks a clear direction. His statement also reflects the voice of the majority of Barisan grassroots members. Puad should not continue to ignore the grassroots. Doing so will only weaken BN and alienate more of its members.
'What Puad needs to confront is the genuine concern among coalition members including Umno members about whether Barisan should continue to bow and rely on others, or instead fully deliberate and determine its future direction, focusing on efforts to revive BN as a leading political force once again.
'Even Puad himself has said that Barisan must uphold the values of moderation and values that has long practised. The question is, can Puad honestly say that his new allies, especially those from DAP, uphold those same values of moderation? Or are they still deeply entrenched in the politics of extremism and destruction?' Mike asked.

Over 100 illegal bases found along Kelantan-Thailand border

KOTA BHARU: More than 100 illegal bases remain active along the Kelantan-Thailand border despite intensified enforcement efforts and the closure of unauthorised routes since December last year. The General Operations Force (GOF) Southeast Brigade commander, Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid, confirmed the presence of these bases in Tumpat, Pasir Mas, and Tanah Merah districts, which serve as key pathways for cross-border violations. 'The terrain and the proximity of these illegal bases to public settlements make continuous monitoring challenging,' he told Bernama. Between January 1 and July 14 this year, 71 individuals were arrested for illegally crossing the border via Sungai Golok. The detainees included 54 men and 17 women from Malaysia, Thailand, Pakistan, and Myanmar. All arrests were made under Section 5(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, involving 42 Malaysians, 26 Thais, two Pakistanis, and one Myanmar national. Nik Ros Azhan noted that most arrests occurred along Sungai Golok, previously the main route for border residents. 'Although the closure order was issued some time ago, there are still individuals who try to take advantage of these illegal routes without considering the security and legal risks,' he said. Some detainees claimed they crossed briefly for shopping, visiting relatives, or leisure, while others sought informal employment in construction, plantations, and restaurants. Additionally, some arrests were linked to the smuggling of subsidised goods. Since Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat ordered the shutdown of illegal jetties and bases in December 2024, residents with relatives across the border have been compelled to use the official Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) complex. The stricter enforcement has also affected boat operators along Sungai Golok, who now face declining customers as border crossings are no longer unrestricted. Nik Ros Azhan stressed that the GOF, alongside other security agencies, will continue tightening border control to protect national sovereignty. 'Anyone wishing to enter the neighbouring country must use legal routes and comply with immigration laws,' he said. On July 5, Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan called for stronger border enforcement through increased manpower, improved security assets, and better inter-agency coordination. He highlighted that the numerous illegal routes along the Kelantan-Thailand border remain a critical national security issue. - Bernama

Madani gov't snubbed for harbouring Zakir Naik who sanctions rape of 'not fully covered' women

A HUMAN rights activist has hit out at the Madani administration for its hesitation to deport global celebrity preacher Zakir Naik who has seemingly accorded green light to the rape of women are not 'fully covered up' or in Islamic term, failed to don the hijab or perhaps purdah. Azira Aziz who is also a corporate and commercial lawyer claimed that 'it boggles my mind why the Madani government protects problematic religious preachers like this man'. 'People like him is why survivors find it difficult to access justice. My heart breaks whenever a survivor asks me, 'Pn Azira salah saya ke saya dirogol? (Mdm Azira, is it my fault that I was raped)?' she penned on X. 'Just deport him.' It boggles my mind why the Madani government protects problematic religious preachers like this man. People like him is why survivors find it difficult to access justice. My heart breaks whenever a survivor asks me, 'Pn Azira salah saya ke saya dirogol?' Just deport him… — Azira 🇲🇾 🌺 (@ladymissazira) July 14, 2025 Azira was alluding to a statement made by the controversial Muslim scholar that 'if the girl wasn't fully covered up, she is to blame' for the rape herself and 'if she was covered up, then the rape and murder that befall her is a test from God''. The fugitive Indian national preacher was answering the question if an individual who has committed a rape accidentally killed the girl, would be forgiven by Allah if he has repented and what justice would be accorded to the victim in this instance. Setting the record straight, a commenter stated recounted that although Zakir Naik has been around in Malaysia long before the Madani government existence, it was nevertheless guilty of harbouring him. 'In fact, the government should have prevented him from coming here. Anyway, the Madani government is at fault for not deporting him,' she berated as a fellow commenter revealed that it was the Barisan Nasional (BN) government prior to Pakatan Harapan taking over that granted Zakir Naik's PR (permanent resident) status. In fact, the approval came from current Deputy Prime Minister and UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who was then the home minister. Another commenter asked Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri and Religious Affairs Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar 'if such view can be accepted as part of the Malaysian culture'. While many men and women netizens supported Zakir Naik's deportation, a few argued that the latter is an asset 'to maintain the conservative votes'. As one commenter bluntly put it, 'with many Malays worshipping Zakir Naik, the opposition is bound to cook up a storm for the ruling government should he be deported'. Moreover, DAP of today is unlike the party of yesteryears for it 'no longer dare to touch Zakir Naik unlike the time of PH1.0'. Whatever the case is, there are always two sides to the coin as a handful of commenters concur with his seemingly narrow view for 'Zakir Naik is merely highlighting how women can prevent rape'. – July 17, 2025

MACC sorry over Beng Hock death, but still no accountability

YOURSAY | 'Ensuring that such incidents never happen again requires more than words and gestures.' Beng Hock's death: MACC apologises to family, offers contribution for son Robbie98: To start, you need to review the offence for which the late Teoh Beng Hock (an aide to then-Selangor state executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah) was called to, the MACC offices that fateful day in 2009. It was over allegations that Ean Yong, then a Selangor exco member, had misused his allocations. A princely sum of a few thousand ringgit in a country where millions routinely go 'missing'. The keyword here is allocation, not stolen money. Teoh died in a secure building with limited access. The coroner and court initially said it was suicide, but this decision was overturned by the appeals court, which also sought to seek the truth with a verdict of death due to 'external' influence. How many people were in contact with him in a secure place at night was the obvious question. The answer we don't know forever tarnishes the credibility of MACC. An apology from MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki is certainly the right start after a long 16 years. We shall give you compensation, get on with your life, and nothing else can be achieved. Sir, this is the wrong answer. What the grieving, courageous family is looking for is justice for their loss, to know who killed Teoh, and for closure of this deplorable saga. This tragedy is a stain forever on the MACC and the political games our 'elites' play. EmEmKay: The formal apology from MACC is a historic development in a tragedy that has haunted Malaysia's conscience for years. However, for Teoh's family - and for many Malaysians - the path to justice is incomplete without decisive action to hold individuals accountable for acts committed under the commission's watch. Ensuring that such incidents never happen again requires more than words and gestures; it demands transparency, reform, and the unwavering pursuit of justice. Amadeus: Azam, a mere apology will not bring Teoh back. The murderers should be held accountable for their actions. This isn't a matter of turning the other cheek when being slapped; this was someone's son, brother, husband, and father. Shouldn't the murderers be accountable for their actions? Attorney-General Dusuki Mokthar, what if this happened to your kin? Would you say no further action (NFA)? As for the compensation offered, is that from the murderers or the people's money? MarioT: An apology without taking any action against those responsible for Teoh's death only brings more trauma and pain to the family. Sixteen years of waiting for justice turned out to be a fiasco. The MACC chief commissioner should, in all honesty, ask himself whether he has truly carried out his duties in a fair and just manner by avoiding taking action against those responsible. Would he treat the case in the same manner if it had happened to one of his family members? Coward: Don't take the money. It's not atonement on their party. They just want to pay to shoo you away. Moreover, it is not atonement that you want or need. If you accept the money, then the perception is that you settle the matter with MACC. Your lawyers will tell you that this will have a big impact on any legal pursuit and redress later. TC: Can MACC or the police call up all the MACC officers in court to hear their versions, and let the public see them, their names, and their current positions? It does not mean they are guilty, but why hide themselves if they are not guilty? Will they dare to appear in public? Why are they mysterious, faceless, and nameless? Ringgit: Death in custody, and you just offer your deepest sympathies and extend an apology? Malaysians want justice for Teoh. According to the country's rule of law, no one should be allowed to die in your custody with any form of cover-up or hiding of information. Please instruct your team at MACC to provide the utmost cooperation to the police, arrest the culprit and charge them in court. You are no judge, so do not conclude on behalf of the public. Please do your part! Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim may appreciate your work, but most Malaysians don't share his view. Quigonbond: MACC is so tone-deaf. The family have already succeeded in a civil case against MACC. It's hilarious to try to bribe them with a goodwill contribution, which is not even a proper function of MACC. The only thing missing here is criminal accountability. Sun n Moon: Still no closure after 16 years for the family. On a bigger scale, why so much focus and attention all these years just on this case and family? What happens to other unexplained death cases in the custody of other families who have suffered the same fate and agony, but not much attention and investigation is given? BrownMacaw9225: This unfortunate episode has tarnished MACC's reputation. Let us all pray that all the affected parties be magnanimous about the matter and move on. Let it be a lesson to all government agencies that the life of any Malaysian matters and not to abuse their power or authority. May God guide us daily. Blue Lights: This apology has long been overdue in Teoh's case; we can finally see the family getting some closure. The tragedy needs this magnanimous public contrition. Sighhhhhhh: Where does the buck stop? All those who were involved, even those who were not there in person, especially if they are in charge, must take some responsibility.
