"Proud moment for me as my family was present at Rashtrapati Bhawan": Para-archer Harvinder Singh after being conferred with Padma Shri
Kaithal (Haryana) [India], May 28 (ANI): India para-archer and Paris Paralympics 2024 gold medallist Harvinder Singh said that it was a 'proud moment' for him as his family was present at the Rashtrapati Bhawan when he received the Padma Shri award on Wednesday.
India's para-archer Harvinder Singh, who won the gold medal in the Paris 2024 Paralympics, was named among the recipients of the Padma Awards 2025.
Speaking to ANI, Harvinder Singh said, 'Very happy to receive the fourth-highest civilian award for India. My family is really very happy. It was a proud moment for me as my family was present at the Rashtrapati Bhawan when I received this award.'
Harvinder has tasted success in the past year with his consistent performances. He got his hands on India's first-ever gold medal in para-archery at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. It was a one-sided affair in the men's individual recurve open event.
Harvinder ousted Poland's Lukasz Ciszek with a straight-set win, 6-0, in the gold medal match. His triumph in Paris marked a medal in two successive Paralympics, having won a bronze medal in the recurve para-archery at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020. His triumph in Tokyo was India's first medal in archery in the Paralympics.
The Padma awards, among the country's highest civilian honours, are conferred in three categories: Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan. The awards are given in various disciplines, such as art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, and literature.
The Padma Shri award is the fourth-highest civilian award of the Republic of India after the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, and the Padma Bhushan. With his Paris Paralympics gold, Padma Shri recognition, and an unwavering focus on upcoming championships, Harvinder Singh is determined to continue his dominance in para-archery and bring more laurels to India. ANI 30 May 2025, 16:46 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], May 30 (ANI): The Indian Junior Women's Hockey Team suffered a 1-3 defeat in a shootout against Chile after a 2-2 draw over four quarters in their fourth match of the friendly Four Nations Tournament in Rosario, Argentina, on Friday, according to a release from Hockey India (HI). Sukhveer Kaur (35') and Kanika Siwach (47') were the goalscorers for India, while Jacinta Solari (27') and Captain Laura Muller (42') scored for Chile. Chile opened the scoring in the second quarter, with Jacinta Solari converting a penalty corner in the 27th minute. India equalised five minutes into the third quarter, as Sukhveer Kaur also converted a penalty corner. Chile regained the lead in the 42nd minute through a field goal from Captain Laura Muller. However, India started the fourth quarter strongly, with Kanika Siwach continuing her goalscoring streak by netting the equaliser in the 47th minute. With neither side able to find a winner in regulation time, the match went into a shootout, where Chile emerged victorious, winning 3-1. Josefina Constanza Gutierrez, Isabel Leonor Messen, and Trinidad Antonia Barrios scored for Chile, while Sonam was the lone scorer for India in the shootout. India will next face Uruguay on June 1. Bumrah eager for England challenge, eyes Dukes ball, swinging conditions
New Delhi [India], May 30 (ANI): World No. 1 Test bowler Jasprit Bumrah is looking forward to testing himself once again in England's seam-friendly conditions as India prepares for their upcoming five-match Test series. The tour begins with a warm-up game on June 13, followed by the first Test at Headingley in Leeds on June 20. 'Playing in England is always a different challenge,' Bumrah told former Australia captain Michael Clarke on the Beyond23 cricket YouTube channel, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo 'I always love bowling with the Dukes ball,' he said. 'But I don't know how much the Dukes ball is doing right now because there's always constant changes to the ball. But the weather, the swinging conditions. And then when the ball becomes soft, there's always a challenge. So I always look forward to playing in England,' he noted. Bumrah, who has already impressed in English conditions, sees the Dukes ball as a key component in the series. However, he pointed out that the biggest challenge for bowlers will be once the ball softens -- a phase when maintaining control becomes more difficult. This will be Bumrah's third Test tour of England. In his previous eight matches (excluding the 2021 World Test Championship final), he has taken 37 wickets at an average of 23.78 and a strike rate of 51.9 , he has been effective with the Duke ball. Speaking about the team's fast-bowling arsenal, Bumrah expressed confidence in the depth of the pace unit. Alongside him, India's squad includes Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Arshdeep Singh -- all capable of making a serious impact.
