Grant suspensions leave elderly struggling in eligibility review
Rudy Leray, 60, said she received her first social grant in April but her profile was blocked and now has to undergo review because she received financial assistance from her daughter.
The SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) said at least 210,000 beneficiaries were flagged to be active in the labour market.
Spokesperson Andile Tshona said they initiated the delayed payments because they want to root out corruption and ensure that grants are going to the right beneficiaries.
'Sassa has flagged some beneficiaries who could have additional sources of income that were not disclosed. In this case they are working or have businesses while they also receive grants,' said Tshona.
'Beneficiaries are obliged to disclose changes in their financial circumstances at the time of application for grants or if their situation changes afterwards.'

Image: Supplied A lawyer and an auditor were among motorists arrested for excessive speeding this weekend along the N2 near Park Rynie, as part of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport's ongoing "Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense, and Alufakwa" road safety campaign. MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, commended the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) team stationed at Park Rynie for their vigilance and commitment to curbing road carnage. 'We wish to pause and commend the RTI team from Park Rynie working along the N2 for their vigilance and dedication towards ensuring road safety this weekend,' said Duma. Among those arrested was a lawyer who was allegedly clocked at 222km/h in a blue Mercedes-Benz while travelling from Umtata, nearly double the legal limit in a 120km/h zone. He initially failed to stop when instructed, prompting officers to give chase before apprehending him. The man was taken to Scottburgh Police Station and released on R3,000 bail. Also arrested was an auditor from Reservoir Hills, who was caught driving at 177km/h in a Hyundai. He was also taken to Scottburgh Police Station and granted R1,500 bail. A third motorist, whose name has not yet been released, was arrested after being caught driving at 178km/h and remains in custody awaiting bail. Video Player is loading. 'However, we must hasten to point out that professionals such as the lawyer and auditor should know better.' Duma expressed concern about the broader societal impact of reckless driving. This as the agency continues to conduct reviews of some grant beneficiaries. 'We are intent in drive to assist all our clients to have their grants reviewed as seamlessly as possible so that no one leave our offices without being assisted and being burdened with back and forth. 'It is for this reason that we want everyone, especially at the senior level to get their hands dirty as well and be on the ground to assist our important clients,' said Sassa CEO Themba Matlou. ALL hands on deck to avoid August 2025 SASSA Grant crisis
The agency is worried August 2025 SASSA Grant disbursements will be heavily disrupted next week if senior staff don't step up. This is the word from SASSA CEO, Temba Matlou, asking for 'all hands on deck' in August from top agency staff. The idiom in question is most often used to describe avoiding an impending crisis. And the country's millions of 'core' social welfare recipients should be concerned. As we've reported previously, August 2025 SASSA Grant payments will see a fourth date added. This is to assist clients with income verification issues. A new fourth payment date comes into affect this month for those who have been called up for review. In a release, Matlou says: 'Executives and Senior Managers in all nine provinces are called on for an all-hands-on-deck approach to beneficiaries under review.' Of course, the August 2025 SASSA Grant crisis refers to a quarter-of-a-million recipients who have been identified for review. Initially, the agency focused on biometric verification of clients' identities. Now, however, they're homing in on those who are cheating the income limits and still getting their SASSA grant payments. SASSA is responsible for paying social grants to 45% of the population. Image: File As such, Matlou says affected clients they will not be inconvenienced by verification of their August 2025 SASSA Grant. 'We are intent to assist all our clients and have their grants reviewed is seamlessly as possible. No one leaves our offices without assistance. It is for this reason we want everyone, even those at a senior level, to get their hands dirty,' Matlou says. Moreover, the agency wants to educate about the new fourth payment date coming in for the August 2025 SASSA Grant cycle. 'Ongoing social grant reviews has put a spotlight on us as an organisation. The August 2025 SASSA Grant window will test our capacity to handle inflow to our local offices. We have no room for tardiness at the expense of the vulnerable,' says Matlou. If you're earning extra income, you're encouraged to declare it to the agency as soon as possible. Image: File The vast majority of August 2025 SASSA Grant payments will proceed without hinderance. However, here's what you'll need to do if you are one of the 250 000 under review: Visit your nearest SASSA branch in-person. Bring along a recent bank statement (from the last three months on an active account). Proof of income (a valid work payslip or employment discharge confirmation). Copy your ID (plus your child's ID if applicable). Marriage/death certificate (relating to your partner). Supply your proof of residence (no older than three months).
