Middle East airspace closure disrupts flights from SVPI airport in Ahmedabad

Time of India6 hours ago

Ahmedabad: Air travellers in Gujarat faced a spate of disruptions on Monday as multiple international flights to and from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport in Ahmedabad were either delayed or cancelled due to the closure of airspace in parts of the Middle East.
Several departures to key Gulf destinations, including Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Kuwait City, were delayed by several hours. One flight each departing from the city airport to Abu Dhabi and Kuwait City was cancelled entirely.
Additionally, inbound flights from Abu Dhabi (two), Dubai, and Sharjah also experienced extended delays, with one Abu Dhabi-bound arrival cancelled. These flights were delayed anywhere between 45 minutes to three hours.

The disruptions come amid ongoing airspace restrictions in certain Middle Eastern regions, reportedly due to security concerns. Airlines operating on these routes have had to adjust their flight paths or cancel operations altogether. In an official advisory, the SVPI airport operator stated, "Due to the closure of airspace in the Middle East, flight operations from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International airport have been impacted.

Passengers are requested to check with their respective airlines on the status of their flights before arriving at the airport."
With several Gulf nations serving as key hubs for onward international connections and hosting large Gujarati diaspora populations, such disruptions have left hundreds of passengers stranded or forced to reschedule travel plans. Several airlines operating along the route have issued travel advisories urging passengers to check their flight status before leaving.
"The flight operations into, out of, and through the Gulf countries have stabilised and are operating as scheduled. However, as airspace over Iran remains restricted, some flights may take alternate routes, which could result in longer travel times. We recommend keeping a close watch on your flight status for the latest updates," said IndiGo airlines on its social media handle.
"Due to the recent regional situation, a number of Emirates flights were rerouted en route to Dubai on June 23, but there were no diversions. After a thorough and careful risk assessment, Emirates will continue to operate flights as scheduled, using flight paths well distanced from conflict areas. Some flights may incur delays due to longer re-routings or airspace congestion, but Emirates' teams are working hard to keep to schedule and minimise any disruption or inconvenience to our customers.
We advise all customers to check flight status before proceeding to the airport," states an advisory by Emirates.

Chaos at Doha, Dubai airports, flyers stuck: Airlines resume Gulf, Europe flights; UAE, Qatar airspaces reopen

NEW DELHI: Flights to and from West Asian and European hubs resumed Tuesday after closures of UAE and Qatari airspaces triggered mass disruptions across global aviation late Monday night. Key airports - Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi - began reopening in the early hours, stabilising operations across the region. West Asia is India's primary air corridor to the world, with Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi serving as essential transit points for millions of travellers. Air India said it would "progressively resume flights to the region starting Tuesday", with most Gulf operations expected to be back from June 25. Europe-bound flights, previously grounded, are also being reinstated, while services to the US East Coast and Canada "will resume at the earliest opportunity". Hundreds of flights were affected Monday night as critical West Asian hubs, including Sharjah, shut down - a fallout of the Iran-Israel conflict. Aircraft en route from Indian cities were diverted mid-air, returned to origin, or held on the tarmac as operators scrambled for clarity. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Major players serving the India-Gulf corridor - Emirates, IndiGo, Air India, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Akasa, SpiceJet, Air Arabia - reported widespread operational halts. "Some flights may experience delays or cancellations due to consequential impacts and extended re-routings or flight times," an Air India spokesperson said. "We are committed to minimising disruptions and restoring schedule integrity. Air India will continue to avoid airspaces assessed as unsafe at any given time." Air India Express announced a staggered return starting Tuesday. Its first West Asia flight, Delhi to Muscat, was set to depart Tuesday, followed by routes from Mumbai, Kozhikode, and Jaipur to Muscat, Riyadh, and Jeddah. Flights to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah, and other cities will resume Wednesday. "Guests are advised to check their flight status," the airline said. IndiGo reported stabilised operations. "Flight operations into, out of, and through the Gulf countries have stabilised and are operating as scheduled. However, as airspace over Iran remains restricted, some flights may take alternative routes, which could result in longer travel times," the airline said. Qatar Airways said operations resumed after Qatari airspace reopened. "Our focus is to help passengers return home or reach their onward journey safely. We are working tirelessly to restore operations," the airline said. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . AI Masterclass for Students. 'I was not sure of getting back home': Kolkata professor airlifted from Iran after 10-day wait; returns with just $20 in pocket

KOLKATA: Falguni Dey, the geography professor from Kolkata who got stranded in war-ravaged Iran, returned to the city on Tuesday morning after a gruelling 10-day wait. Dey, along with other Indian passengers, was evacuated by the Indian embassy on a Mahan Air flight from Mashhad late on Monday night. "Over the past 10 days, I was caught between hope and despair. Even after the flight took off from Mashhad, I was not sure of getting back home. In the past 10 days, my hopes were shattered a number of times. When the flight landed in New Delhi and I came out of the immigration checks, it started to sink in slowly," Dey said. After Israel launched a missile strike on June 14 — a day before his scheduled departure — Dey was on the run to evade the destruction caused by Israeli missiles and drones. With $200 in his pocket, he travelled from the north to the west of Iran. His attempts to cross Iran first through Azerbaijan and then through Armenia were unsuccessful. He reached Mashhad on Sunday and got himself registered with the Indian embassy for evacuation. When he returned home on Tuesday morning, he had $20 left with him. Five buses parked outside the hotel took us to the airport in the evening," he recounted. The flight took off from Mashhad at 1:30 am and reached New Delhi around 4 am. Two officials from the Bengal govt were present at the airport. "My flight to Kolkata was scheduled at 5 am and the Bengal govt officials helped to complete the formalities in time," he said. Dey called his wife to inform her about his return after he reached New Delhi. When he reached Kolkata airport, his wife was waiting outside. "My phone rang at 4 am and it was a call from his India number. I could not believe my eyes. He asked me to reach the airport fast," said Kanyakumari Dey, his wife. Since Dey was stuck in Iran, it was a prolonged fight for her, too. From their Jadavpur home, she coordinated with officials at the Tehran office, filed visa applications for him, followed up with the embassy offices, counselled him when he was depressed, and continued to keep the hope in him alive. "I lost hope twice when Azerbaijan and Armenia declined his visa and I felt that we would not be able to bring him back. He was stuck in a situation where everything was at odds. He survived as he has a steely nerve," she said.
