TENOM: The Tenom Pangi hydroelectric power plant is in operation, starting May 14, two years after being damaged by floods and a landslide. Deputy Chief Minister cum State Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said the 66MW facility is a key power source for the state. "The gradual restart of all three turbines at the Tenom Pangi Hydroelectric Power Station, from October 2024 to April this year, shows the strong dedication of the staff," he said. "They worked hard to restore the plant's operations and helped increase its power supply to 66MW, which also adds to the electricity reserve for the Sabah Grid." Shahelmey reaffirmed the government's commitment to a reliable electricity supply, highlighting ongoing plans to meet rising residential and commercial demand and support future development. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? State bond repayment not solely Warisan's doing, says Masidi

Published on: Sunday, August 10, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 10, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun ( pic ) has clarified that the repayment of RM1 billion in state bonds in 2019 was not solely the result of actions by the then Warisan government. He said the bonds, issued in December 2014 during the Barisan Nasional administration, came with a Bank Negara Malaysia requirement for a dedicated Sinking Fund to ensure repayment on maturity. Advertisement Under the terms, RM200 million was to be deposited annually into the fund over five years, allowing the state to accumulate the necessary amount before 2019. By the time the Warisan administration assumed office in 2018, most of the funds had already been secured for the repayment. Masidi said the RM1 billion in the Sinking Fund in 2019 enabled a one-off payment to settle the bond debt in full. He stressed that the repayment reflected prudent planning by the previous administration rather than any special initiative by its successor. Advertisement Masidi added that the current government remains committed to providing accurate information on state finances and countering any misleading claims. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Highway authority denies claim that motorcyclists need to pay tolls from Oct 2025

THE Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) has denied a viral social media post claiming that motorcyclists will have to pay tolls from October 2025, calling it false and misleading. The post, titled 'Motorcyclists Can Experience Paying Tolls Starting October 2025', was uploaded on Aug 9, 2025, by the account ebidmotor across Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. In a statement, LLM said the post contained 'inaccurate information that could have misled highway users, particularly motorcyclists' and 'has harmed the reputations of the Government, the Works Ministry, LLM and the concessionaires involved.' LLM explained that PLUS Malaysia Berhad is currently testing an open toll system using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology. 'If the test is successful, implementation will be carried out in stages on highways operated by PLUS Malaysia Berhad. The main objective of this system is to streamline traffic flow, enhance user comfort, and reduce congestion at toll plazas,' it said. 'There are no changes to the categories of vehicles subject to tolls at this time, including motorcyclists. Therefore, the post uploaded by ebidmotor is untrue, misleading, and can cause unnecessary concern among motorcyclists,' it added. LLM urged the public not to believe or spread unverified claims and instead 'refer to official sources and statements verified by the authorities.' —Aug 10, 2025 Main image: Malay Mail

"For the record, PLUS Malaysia Berhad is currently testing an open toll system using Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology. "If successful, the system will be implemented in stages on highways operated by PLUS Malaysia Berhad. The main objective is to improve traffic flow, enhance user convenience and reduce congestion at toll plazas," it said in a statement today. Meanwhile, Bernama also reported that LLM stressed that there has been no change to the categories of vehicles subject to tolls, which excludes motorcycles.
