Uttar Pradesh has achieved the target of extending old-age pension support to 61 lakh beneficiaries in the first quarter of 2025-26, prompting the state government to raise the bar to 67.50 lakh beneficiaries, an official statement said on Tuesday.In the first quarter of the previous financial year, the Uttar Pradesh government met its goal by crediting Rs 1,000 monthly pension into the bank accounts of 56 lakh elderly beneficiaries.For 2025-26, the Social Welfare Department set a target of 61 lakh pensioners under the old-age pension scheme - a milestone it has already surpassed, prompting the government to raise the target even higher, the statement said.The introduction of the single nodal account (SNA) system has made the pension distribution process fully digital and transparent, it said.Under this system, pension amounts are transferred directly to the Aadhaar-linked accounts, eliminating middlemen and ensuring timely, corruption-free disbursement.The SNA system also facilitates faster payments, easier audits, and more efficient fund tracking, ensuring that every rupee is used for its intended purpose, the statement said.The old-age pension scheme remains a cornerstone of the Yogi Adityanath government 's public welfare agenda, aimed at making financially vulnerable senior citizens self-reliant.Under the scheme, all eligible individuals aged 60 years and above receive Rs 1,000 per month to ease their financial hardship.Since the scheme's expansion began in 2017 - when it covered 37.47 lakh beneficiaries - its reach has nearly doubled, with the government now targeting 67.50 lakh beneficiaries.In keeping with the chief minister's directives, anyone found eligible beyond the set target is also included in the scheme.The reach of the scheme has grown steadily since 2018-19, when 40.71 lakh beneficiaries received Rs 1,879 crore.By 2019-20, the numbers rose to 47.99 lakh (Rs 2,698 crore), and in 2020-21 to 51.24 lakh (Rs 3,694 crore).The upward trend continued with 51.92 lakh (Rs 4,278 crore) beneficiaries in 2021-22, 54.97 lakh (Rs 6,083 crore) in 2022-23, and 55.68 lakh (Rs 6,464 crore) in 2023-24.In 2024-25, 55.99 lakh elderly beneficiaries received pensions, the statement said.The scheme is now even more accessible through its online application facility. In the rural areas, applications are verified by the block development officer, while in urban areas, the sub-district magistrate is responsible.The annual income limit for eligibility is Rs 56,460 in urban areas and Rs 46,080 in rural areas, the statement said.

Bolpur: A court in West Bengal's Birbhum district on Monday granted bail to TMC leader Anubrata Mondal after he surrendered in the court and moved an anticipatory relief petition in connection with the case of alleged use of abusive and derogatory language during a telephonic conversation with a police officer. Mondal's plea on health grounds was accepted by Judicial Magistrate Banikbrata Dutta of Bolpur Subdivision Court on a surety of Rs 1,000 and on condition that he will continue to cooperate with the probe and meet the investigating officer (IO) when summoned, court officials said. In a leaked four-minute telephonic conversation between Mondal and Bolpur police station inspector-in-charge Litan Halder on May 29 this year, the authenticity of which PTI couldn't independently verify, the Birbhum Trinamool Congress leader was heard hurling invectives at the police officer and threatening his wife and mother. Left red-faced by the audio-clip, the party issued him a four-hour apology deadline and a suo motu FIR was lodged against him by the police. Mondal was issued police summons and his security details withdrawn. Faced with party annoyance, Mondal tendered written apologies to both the police officer and the TMC state president Subrata Bakshi but avoided responding to the initial summons from Bolpur Police. On June 6, seven days after the purported audio clip surfaced, Mondal appeared before the Bolpur SDPO where his cell phone was reportedly inspected. Mondal arrived at the Bolpur Subdivision Court around 10.40 am on Monday for his voluntary surrender and his bail hearing was taken up post 2 pm. "The court granted him bail considering his age and the physical ailments he suffers from. There are no pre-conditions to his bail," said Nupur Dutta Banerjee, Mondal's counsel. "I had submitted before the court that the IO in this case did not duly comply with the notice served to Mondal under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, which outlines the procedure for police to issue a notice to individuals in cognisable offenses where arrest isn't immediately necessary," said Phiroj Pal, government lawyer, confirming that he opposed the bail prayer. "Secondly, we are still not privy to the police's case diary (CD) and have no idea how far the investigations in this case have so far progressed. We wanted the court to wait till we had the CD in our hand," he added. Pal said that the court was prima facie satisfied with the petitioner's submission that Mondal has cooperated with the police and that there has been no progress in the probe for a formidable period. In September 2024, Mondal was granted bail in the multi-crore cattle smuggling case when he stepped out of the Tihar Jail after remaining imprisoned for over two years.

Chandigarh: The Haryana Human Rights Commission has taken suo-motu cognizance of a media report highlighting an incident where a serving employee of the Public Health Department, a resident of Rohtak, was allegedly denied his salary in the post-COVID period because his Aadhaar record shows him as "deceased". This is despite the fact that he is alive and continues to discharge his duties regularly. As a result of this administrative lapse, the employee has reportedly been deprived of his lawful remuneration for an extended period. Upon review, the Commission observed that the Public Health Department failed to update the employee's record on the HKRN portal, despite being aware that the "deceased" status in Aadhaar was erroneous. This inaction has caused the complainant prolonged financial hardship and mental agony, undermining his right to work with dignity and creating unnecessary uncertainty. The Commission expressed concern that such errors can severely affect an individual's livelihood, confidence, and peace of mind. The full bench of the Commission, comprising Chairperson Justice Lalit Batra and members Kuldip Jain and Deep Bhatia, noted that such treatment appears contrary to Article 7 of the United Nations International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), which recognises the right to just and favourable conditions of work, including remuneration ensuring a decent living for workers and their families. The non-payment of wages for work performed constitutes a violation of the employee's human rights, particularly the right to livelihood and dignity as guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution and reaffirmed in international human rights instruments. The department's inaction amounts to an arbitrary deprivation of earnings, impairing the complainant's ability to support himself and his family. Reflecting on the situation, the Commission recalled a sentiment from Shakespeare's famous play 'Julius Caesar' that 'sometimes the dead may exert greater influence than the living'. However, the Commission observed that the present case revealed a stark inversion of that idea: a man undeniably alive, diligently performing his duties, is being officially treated as deceased. This erroneous classification not only deprived him of his rightful wages but also subjected him to indignity and unnecessary hardship. Ignoring the service of a living employee in such a manner is an administrative failure that the Commission cannot overlook. Finding prima facie evidence of administrative negligence and violation of the complainant's rights, the Commission directed immediate action to restore the employee's salary, correct all records, and ensure that no employee faces such an anomalous and unjust situation in the future. The Commission has called for a report on the necessary corrections to the Aadhaar record of the complainant from the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Rohtak, and the Commissioner and Secretary, Citizen Resources Information Department (CRID), before the next hearing on September 23.

Once a major tourist draw, Bird Park sees dip in visitors & revenue
Chandigarh: Conceptualised and built with the aim of boosting tourism in Chandigarh, the Bird Park located in the city's lush green northern fringe is seeing a gradual dip in tourist flow. The UT administration had left no stone unturned to woo visitors, equipping the park with the necessary facilities and other attractions. No wonder, it turned out to be a popular tourist draw then. A senior UT official said, "Earlier, a large number of visitors from Chandigarh Tricity used to visit the park. But later their number dwindled, and tourists from outside the Tricity started thronging the park. Though the park still gets visitors, and the craze is still there, it's not like what it was when it first opened." Records available with the Chandigarh administration show that from its inception till March 2023, a total of 5,16,860 visitors visited the Bird Park. However, there was a dip in tourist flow after that. In 2023-2024 financial year, the park saw 4,08,846 visitors. The number went down further in 2024-2025FY, with a total of 329,332 visitors. Naturally, revenue also saw a dip with every passing year. But it wasn't as much compared to the decline in the number of visitors. UT records show that from Nov 2021 till March 2023, the park authority earned a revenue of Rs 2.73 crore, while it came down to 2.63 crore in 2023-2024FY. The revenue went down further in 2024-2025FY, with the Chandigarh administration collecting Rs 2.60 crore during the period. So, from Nov 2021 till the end of the last financial year (March 2025), the authority earned over Rs 7.98 crore from the Bird Park. Students, who visit the Bird Park from time to time as part of their school trips, are also among them. The enclosures inside the Bird Park have been designed in such a way that the birds, apart from taking flight and nesting in the natural habitat, can stay at the aviary while visitors can walk past them. The structures enclose thousands of plants of varying canopies, which provide an ideal habitat, food, and shelter for the birds that can fly freely and breed.
