As Coronation Street's Kit divides viewers, is he soap's next huge villain?

Metro25-07-2025
It's fair to say that Kit Green has been a complex addition to Coronation Street.
Previously known for his role as kindly everyman Damon Kinsella in Hollyoaks, actor Jacob Roberts has made his mark with his compelling performances as the much more reserved, calculating Kit.
But just over a year after his first appearance, we're no closer to understanding exactly which direction Kit is going in as a long-term character.
As the long-lost son of Bernie Winters (Jane Hazlegrove), Kit's past with killer Mick Michaelis (Joe Layton) and the latter's wife Lou (Farrel Hegarty) was explored in a flashback episode, revealing Kit's role in a horrific firework attack which left a woman severely injured.
However, although we saw a young Kit threaten Mick so as to protect himself from any consequences, I'm still reluctant to label Kit as an out and out villain.
A remorseful Kit trained as a police officer and, somewhere along the way, he became a corrupt cop. We've seen Kit cover up his own act of criminal damage and menace Beth Sutherland (Lisa George) into leaving Weatherfield after taking over her dodgy side hustle.
Yet, another incident saw Kit plant evidence in the vehicle of sexual predator Nathan Curtis (Christopher Harper), sending the evil man back to prison where he belonged. Kit also used his position to make life easier for late brother Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) and sister Gemma Winter-Brown (Dolly-Rose Campbell).
There seems to be a constant tug of war between the devil on Kit's shoulder and his conscience, meaning that he's not quite a villain, but also not a salt-of-the-earth good guy.
So, where does that leave him?
Well, many before Kit have transitioned from miscreant to popular anti-hero.
If Corrie chooses not to double down on his dark side and instead delves further into Kit's psyche, perhaps he'll follow in the footsteps of the multi-layered Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford), Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) and Gary Windass (Mikey North). They have all dabbled in manipulation, murder or both, but ultimately won over the audience.
Confirmation that new cobbles regular Brody (Ryan Mulvey), the boy that Mick raised as his own, was actually fathered by Kit, hints that Coronation Street is committed to cementing Kit as a key fixture.
After surviving being stabbed by Mick, Kit rejected Brody but made amends with interfering but well-meaning Bernie in a moment of genuine warmth.
When we see Kit around Bernie and Gemma, his vulnerable side comes out. Kit's blossoming romance with Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien) has softened him, too, and with imprisoned Mick having cut Brody off for good, this change in demeanour paves the way for Kit to get to know his son.
Kit has abandonment issues thanks to Bernie giving him up as a child, and this could be why he can't face parenthood.
But, with the show making excessive use of its police station set, will Kit get the chance to face these demons as thoroughly as he deserves? After all, it's whenever he's in work mode that Kit's ruthless side resurfaces.
While his ambiguity provides constant intrigue, we're increasingly curious as to whether he'll lean further into his nasty streak or listen to his moral compass, and how that could impact his future.
It might seem easier for Kit to be billed as a full-time 'bad boy'. All it would take is one outrageous act that crosses the line from scheming to sinister, and an ensuing pattern that prevents him from ever turning back, as with Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) and Richard Hillman (Brian Capron).

Still, Kit surely has a longer shelf life than that, and Jacob has the talent and staying power to turn things around for his alter ego and show that there are reasons for his underhand behaviour. More Trending
A strong path to redemption has created some of soap land's best-loved anti-heroes, from Emmerdale's Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) to Hollyoaks' Sienna Blake (Anna Passey).
That journey doesn't ensure an entirely reformed character; merely one who has earned empathy, likeability and, at times, adoration in the eyes of the viewer – something Kit could produce if given the capacity.
Slowly but surely, Kit's armour is cracking. Only time will tell whether this is enough to keep his fiendish side at bay, or if he will become Coronation Street's next big villain.

Coronation Street legend Sally Ann Matthews confirms exit 39 years after debut

Coronation Street star Sally Ann Matthews appears to have confirmed her departure from the ITV soap after a ten year stint. The Jenny Connor actress took to Instagram to share a picture of Jenny during one of her most hard-hitting storylines, which saw the character kidnap Jack Webster after the loss of her own son. Alongside the picture she wrote: 'I was supposed to stay for five months but ended up doing an extra ten years because I loved it so much! 'It's time though to play those parts I always hoped I would when I'd 'grown up.' Thanks Trafford Wharf Rd for the memories and endless laughter.' Metro has reached out to Coronation Street for comment. Fans are already reaching out in support of the actress, who first appeared in 1986 as the foster daughter of Rita Fairclough (Barbara Knox). 'Gutted tbh. Your character has me in fits…,' one said in the comments of the post, while another wrote: 'One of my favourite characters. She is Corrie old school honesty and humour and will be missed.' A third was clearly in disbelief, writing: 'SORRY WHAT.' Jenny's original stint on the cobbles lasted five years, with the character making a brief return in 1993. More Trending In 2015, Jenny arrived back onto the cobbles and straight into a disastrous relationship with Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell), before taking on a more permanent stint the following year. The character has been central to the programme for quite some time, kicking off when Jenny lost her husband Johnny (Richard Hawley) in a freak drowning accident in a sewer system. Former step-daughter Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan) would later arrive and in more recent months, convince her to use stolen money from the Underworld factory to buy back the Rovers Return. Emmerdale newcomer Joe Absolom reveals dark story for drug dealer villain

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) AFTER making a dramatic debut on Emmerdale last month, Joe Absolom's new drug dealing character, Ray, keeps mysteriously disappearing – only to return with more dodgy antics up his sleeve. And this week, he is back again only this time, he scuppers any plans of a romantic date between April Windsor and her homeless pal, Dylan Penders. It soon becomes apparent he's being paid by Ray to deliver his drugs to clients in return for huge wads of cash. Dylan has also been trying to hide a stab wound by thug Kyle. For former EastEnders and Doc Martin star, Joe, 46, the plotlines have proved a blast to film with the actor going as far today to reveal he has always rated the soap as being the 'friendliest' since shooting to fame 25 years ago in EastEnders. He even admits he used to think some Hollyoaks' stars came across more like 'footballers' than soap actors. Joe reveals: 'Everyone has been so welcoming since I joined and I am loving filming the scenes. 'What is funny is years ago when we went to the Soap Awards, we – the EastEnders mob - would all say at the end of it, 'Emmerdale are the nicest lot'. 'You'd speak to these guys and you'd see the Hollyoaks' guys flexing, they would always wear white dinner jackets - slightly like footballers. 'Coronation Street were all interesting people. Emmerdale were always the most genuine and lovely people, so when I saw Jeff (Hordley), we were laughing about how we'd met many years ago. 'The fact they have been really nice since I arrived has helped.' He teases the plot lines will get very dark in the coming weeks with some drugs even going astray. Horrifying moment Emmerdale's April comes face to face with man who committed disgusting act on her while homeless 'It's also set to cause more upset for fan favourite Marlon Dingle as his daughter April, played by Amelia Flanagan, looks set to get embroiled in the drug drama. 'Ray is such a fun character to play,' adds Joe. 'We've been filming in the park and my character sees the youngsters as easy manipulation. 'I can't say too much but Ray has been handing over wads of cash! I get to peel off fifty pounds notes!' Last month, Joe revealed how his 14-year-old son, Casper – Cass for short - in particular thinks it is pretty cool his dad is playing a drug gangster. Today he confides, Cass,14, has been inspired to follow in his footsteps one day. And Joe – also a proud dad to Lyla, 18, and Daisy, 12 - says he has seen his own life flash before him as he encourages Cass to pursue his dreams. But he smiles as he reveals his son definitely doesn't have any plans to land a role in a soap. Instead, he's hoping to one day star in a Netflix drama. 'Cass wants to be an actor, 'says Joe. 'He is desperate. He is like 'dad I want to be on Stranger Things!' This is the YouTube and Netflix generation; they want to be in Marvel films!' Joe goes on to admit, however, he initially tried to put his son off before seeing just how talented he is. 'I told him 'Don't do it, get a proper job'. It's a strange business to go into and there is rejection. 'I do feel it as a parent but he is really good. Genuinely so and I have now helped him get an agent. He has been in Bugsy and he's had some very good auditions and got very close.' Reflecting on how much his life has turned a full circle, Joe adds: 'What is weird is my dad used to be my chaperone and what's weird is there I was recently sitting in Manchester taking him to an audition! It feels like the circle of life is turning.' How will he feel if Cass does land his first major TV role? 'It's surreal,' replies Joe. 'I've explained the risks and I do worry about the cost on a young mind and rejection but he says he is up for it! Fingers crossed!' Whilst Cass dreams of being the next Stranger Things star, Joe says the role of British soaps still have a huge one to play. He praises soap bosses for ensuring they can now be streamed, like Netflix shows. Says Joe: 'The way people watch TV is changing but soaps are finding their way in that people will come back to the recurring storylines. Soap's most harrowing teen storylines We take a look at other harrowing teen soap storylines from soaps Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks. Belle Dingle's schizophrenia in Emmerdale - Belle's (Eden Taylor-Draper) traumatic journey in Emmerdale took a dark turn when, after accidentally killing her best friend Gemma at just 16, her mental health began to spiral. The storyline, which saw Belle struggling with her grief and guilt, showcased her battle with hearing Gemma's voice inside her head, leading to a dramatic decline in her well-being. Hannah Ashworth's anorexia in Hollyoaks - Viewers were horrified as they watched Hannah (Emma Rigby), a seemingly innocent teen, spiral into dangerous behavior, starving herself in an attempt to achieve what she thought was the ideal body. As Hannah's condition worsened, the storyline became more intense, culminating in her being hospitalised for two months as she fought for her life. Bethany Platt's grooming ordeal in Coronation Street - Vulnerable schoolgirl, played by Lucy Fallon, was at the centre of one of Corrie's darkest storylines to date when she fell under the spell of her older boyfriend and sexual predator. The controversial scenes saw Nathan groom and manipulate the 16-year-old before coercing her into sleeping with his friends, with one of them raping her. Whitney Dean's abuse from Tony in EastEnders - Since the age of 12, she had been in a twisted relationship with her stepmum Bianca's boyfriend, Tony King. The predator had groomed young Whit (Shona McGarty), making her believe she was in love and planning to run away with him. On her 16th birthday, the traumatised teen finally revealed the years of abuse to Bianca. Tony was swiftly sent to prison sentenced for 13 years. 'They have characters who they love and the fact soaps are still part of the schedules on every channel is a testament to the work they put into it and the quality.' As for what lies ahead for Ray and his drug dealing and Joe warns: 'Ray is determined to get what he wants, so that lends itself to many different scenarios. 'If people say: 'we don't want to grow (the drugs) anymore', it puts everyone in a difficult situation. 'Ray knows what they are growing is so good and it sells well. He is very manipulative!' Emmerdale runs every weekdays on ITV1 and STV1 at 7.30pm.
