The incident occurred when the procession was returning from the graveyard.
Providing details of the incident, Jaunpur Circle Officer Shahganj Ajit Singh Chauhan said on Monday that a Tazia made of aluminium was being taken back to Sagunpur under Khutahan police station on a tractor trolley on Sunday night after performing the ritual of burying at Karbala (graveyard) in Patela village. While passing through Sadhanganj, the Tazia came in contact with a live high-tension wire, following which three people—Altmas, Mohammad Kaif, and Mohammad Mobeen— suffered burn injuries.
They were immediately rushed to a local hospital, where doctors referred critically-burnt Altmas and Mohammad Kaif to the district hospital. At the hospital, they were declared dead while Kaif was released after receiving first aid. He added that the bodies were sent for post-mortem examination.
Upset over the incident, the villagers alleged that they had given a written complaint to the SDM Shahganj about the low-hanging wires of the HT line. Also, the electricity department was informed about the same over the phone, but no action was taken in this regard.
