1,200 voters per booth: India to have smaller polling stations, EC's Bihar election exercise to go national
Bihar will only allow 1,200 voters per booth in the upcoming assembly elections and eventually extend the cap to all subsequent polls, making it the first state to do so. Currently, the norm is to let 1,500 voters in polling stations (PS) across the country.
The reduced upper limit in the number of voters to be admitted per station will be accommodated in 12,817 new polling booths in Bihar, taking the total number of PS to 90,712 from 77,895.

The Election Commission announced the changes as part of an update on special intensive revision (SIR) that has created a lot of buzz regarding the new voters' list ahead of the upcoming elections in Bihar.
The poll body says additional polling stations in Bihar are required as per SIR instructions dated June 24 and will be assessed by the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) based on a cap of 1,200 electors per station.
They are intended to help reduce long queues on polling day. The EC emphasised that this cap of 1,200 electors per polling station will also be implemented across other states and Union Territories. The Commission had earlier announced that the SIR exercise would be conducted nationwide, with the schedule to be announced separately.
The CEOs DEOs/EROs/BLOs have held meetings with representatives of all political parties and shared detailed lists of the 29.62 lakh electors whose Forms have not been received so far, as well as the nearly 43.93 lakh electors who were not found at their addresses.
All 12 major political parties have also been requested to connect with these remaining electors through their District Presidents and nearly 1.5 lakh Booth Level Agents (BLAs). This is to ensure that the entire election machinery, including political parties, works together in a mission mode so that no eligible elector is left out of the draft Electoral Roll to be published on August 1, 2025, as per ECI.

In a statement, ECI said that from August 1, 2025, any member of the public can file objections for any additions/deletions/rectifications in Draft Electoral Rolls, in accordance with the SIR order dated 24.06.2025.

BJP counters Congress allegations on voter rolls, says Rahul Gandhi peddling ‘lies'
The BJP on Sunday launched a sharp counterattack on Congress and RJD over their allegations of electoral roll manipulation, with party leaders dismissing Rahul Gandhi's charges as 'baseless lies' aimed at undermining democratic institutions ahead of the Bihar elections. BJP national spokesperson Syed Zafar Islam, speaking to IANS in Mumbai, said the Election Commission (EC) is an independent body and should not be dragged into partisan politics. 'The Election Commission is an independent body, and all institutions and political parties are equal before it. It works independently without any interference. Making such allegations against it is wrong. The EC has clearly stated that if you make false accusations, provide evidence. If there is no proof, then go to court. Without evidence, such claims are understood to be baseless,' Islam said. On Rahul Gandhi's Voter Adhikar Yatra, Zafar Islam took a dig at the Congress leader. 'Wherever Rahul Gandhi has gone, Congress has faced a complete wipeout. Now that he has stepped into Bihar, Congress is set to face the same fate here as well,' he remarked. In Patna, BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain lauded the EC's detailed press conference on Sunday, saying it had given a 'strong response' to those 'creating unrest.' 'The names that were supposed to be collected have been collected, and if any names are still pending, there is still time to submit the forms,' Hussain told IANS. The saffron party also intensified its digital offensive, with BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari posting a point-by-point rebuttal on X to counter Congress leader Jairam Ramesh's claims. Bhandari accused Rahul Gandhi of 'destroying public trust in elections by peddling lies' and challenged him to file an affidavit under oath if he truly believed in his allegations. The BJP's aggressive rebuttal indicates it is unwilling to cede ground on the election integrity debate, with leaders accusing the Congress of deliberately sowing doubts ahead of the Bihar polls.

Rahul Gandhi should apologise for making baseless allegations against RSS: BJP
Telangana BJP demanded Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to apologise for his remarks on RSS and for making baseless allegations against the organisation. Party vice president and former MLA N.V.S.S. Prabhakar claimed that even Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, grand father of Mr. Rahul Gandhi, himself had appreciated the self-less services of RSS during India-China war while addressing the nation during the 1963 Republic Day celebrations. Dr. Ambedkar too had attended a RSS programme at Karad of Satara district on January 2, 1940 and written in a book stating that RSS is a patriotic organization while Mahatma Gandhi had attended RSS camp and Sakha in 1934 at Vardha and in Delhi on September 16, 1947 describing RSS as a 'disciplined organization', he claimed. Therefore, the BJP leader has advised Mr. Gandhi to read Indian history properly before making objectionable comments. In a separate statement, party spokespersons N.V. Subash also criticised Mr. Gandhi for the 'reckless and irresponsible' accusations against the Election Commission of India (ECI), terming them as a 'deliberate attempt to erode public trust in a constitutionally mandated institution'. Despite repeated clarifications from the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar that no eligible voter will be deleted during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the Opposition continues to peddle falsehoods. The BJP leader accused Mr. Gandhi of 'leading an endless drama' designed not to protect voters but to malign the credibility of the Election Commission. Neither the EC nor the voters will be cowed down by such 'manufactured slander', since credibility people of India have faith in free and fair elections, he added.

Will Election Commission conduct Bihar-like SIR in West Bengal? CEC Gyanesh Kumar makes big claim
Home News Will Election Commission conduct Bihar-like SIR in West Bengal? CEC Gyanesh Kumar makes big claim Will Election Commission conduct Bihar-like SIR in West Bengal? CEC Gyanesh Kumar makes big claim Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has said that SIR in West Bengal will be announced at an appropriate time. Gyanesh Kumar- File image New Delhi: In a significant update amid the ongoing row on Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has said that the Election Commission will decide at an appropriate time whether to conduct a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal. Notably, the assembly elections of West Bengal are scheduled to be held in 2026. Responding to a question on SIR in a press conference in New Delhi, the CEC said that the decision will be taken collectively by the three commissioners. The remark of the ECI Chief are significant as it comes after the ECI in July published data from the last SIR held in Bengal in 2002, covering 11 districts and 103 assembly constituencies, amid political debate over fresh revisions in Bihar. Notably, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has also opposed the SIR in Bihar. What EC said on conducting SIR in West Bengal? 'We three (election) commissioners will decide at an appropriate time and take a decision on when to conduct SIR in West Bengal or other states. It will be announced at an appropriate time', CEC Gyanesh Kumar said while addressing a press conference. Was Bihar SIR carried out in haste? In response to the timing of conducting the SIR in Bihar, Kumar has clarified that it is a myth that SIR has been carried out in haste and emphasised that it is the EC's legal duty to correct the voter list before every election. 'It is a matter of grave concern that some parties and their leaders are spreading misinformation on SIR in Bihar… some political parties are firing from the Election Commission's shoulder. The EC exhorts all political parties to file claims and objections on draft electoral rolls in Bihar … 15 days are still remaining. 'Doors of the Election Commission are open to everyone, and booth-level officers and agents are working together in a transparent manner,' he said.
