Johor Umno Youth slams Amanah's ‘nauseating' habit of pushing for seats

Johor Umno Youth chief Noor Azleen Ambros (left) told Johor Amanah vice-chief Zuhan Zain that seat negotiations will be conducted as a coalition, in this case by BN and PH, and not by the individual components.
PETALING JAYA : Johor Umno Youth has described as 'nauseating' Amanah's tendency to stake its claim of seats it wants to contest at the next state election, despite Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan having yet to finalise any negotiations.
Johor Umno Youth chief Noor Azleen Ambros said Johor Amanah vice-chief Zuhan Zain had gone overboard by claiming that PH could go solo at the next Johor polls.
Zuhan had said he did not discount the possibility of PH clashing with BN – its ally in the unity government – at the 16th general election.
Noor Azleen said seat negotiations would be conducted as a coalition, in this case by BN and PH, and not by the individual components.
'So, it is best to refer to your own coalition first before issuing such nauseating statements.
'Also, Amanah should cut its coat according to the cloth. It only has the right to defend one state seat,' he said in a statement, referring to the Simpang Jeram constituency, currently represented by Nazri Abdul Rahman.
Last Saturday, Zuhan said Johor PH needed to immediately decide if it wanted to go solo or team up with BN in the next state election.
He said it was vital to decide on this as soon as possible to enable the coalition to focus on preparing for the polls, expected to be held early next year.
An early decision was also needed to discuss seat allocations if PH intends on continuing to work with BN, he said.
In the 2022 state election, Amanah only won one of the 20 seats contested.

Gerik MP proposes first-response team near fatal bus crash site

The fatal crash, which occurred early yesterday, involved an MPV which was hit by a bus as the vehicles were going downhill on the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Gerik MP Fathul Huzir Ayob has called for the immediate establishment of a permanent first-response team at Pulau Banding, Perak, to provide assistance in the event of future tragedies on the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway where a fatal bus crash claimed 15 lives yesterday. Highlighting an urgent need for quicker response times in emergencies, Fathul said the proposed set-up should include a clinic, along with ambulance services, police, fire and rescue personnel, the Civil Defence Force, and the People's Volunteer Corps or Rela. 'The presence of a dedicated response team equipped with emergency medical capabilities, technical assistance, and logistical support is crucial in providing early aid to accident victims,' he said in a statement. 'This team must be permanently stationed at Pulau Banding to avoid having to wait for rescue units from Gerik or Jeli, which can take 45 minutes to an hour or more to arrive,' he said, commenting on yesterday's accident. In the early morning incident, a multi-purpose vehicle was hit by the bus, carrying students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, as the vehicles were going downhill on the highway. Fathul also urged the government to consider upgrading the East-West Highway, saying that the road, constructed in 1967, was outdated and in poor condition. 'The road must be rebuilt with modern materials and design, widened, equipped with proper lighting, and more effective road markings and signage, especially considering that the route passes through the Royal Belum forest reserve,' he said. He added that any redevelopment of the road must factor in the presence of wildlife such as elephants, tigers, and buffalo. 'We must consider constructing underpasses, overpasses or elevated roads like the Rawang Bypass. There are many international projects that can serve as references,' he said.

Don't risk lives to beat the clock, Bung Moktar reminds Sabah bus drivers after deadly Gerik crash

KOTA KINABALU, June 10 — Following the tragic accident involving an express bus in Gerik, Perak, which claimed 15 students' lives, Umno Sabah chief Datuk Seri Panglima Bung Moktar Radin has issued a stern reminder to express bus drivers in Sabah to adhere strictly to speed limits and prioritize passenger safety at all times. Expressing his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy, Bung Moktar said the incident should serve as a sobering reminder to all express bus operators and drivers across the country. 'I would like to express my sorrow and condolences to the families of the victims of the tragedy,' he said in a statement on Tuesday. 'This heartbreaking incident not only took the lives of young students still in pursuit of education but should also be a wake-up call to all express bus operators, especially in Sabah,' he stressed. Bung Moktar urged drivers to take their responsibility seriously and to resist the temptation to speed in order to meet tight schedules. 'Do not use time constraints as an excuse to drive recklessly or exceed speed limits. Every life on that bus is a trust, from parents, children, workers and students who simply want to reach their destinations safely,' he said. 'A single moment of carelessness can lead to irreversible tragedy that no amount of money or regret can undo,' he pointed out. He also called on express bus companies in Sabah to better regulate their drivers' work schedules to avoid fatigue-related accidents. 'Bus companies must ensure drivers are not overburdened with long hours that can affect their focus and safety on the road. Risk management must be the priority, not just profit,' he emphasized. In addition, Bung Moktar urged government agencies, particularly the Road Transport Department (JPJ), to step up enforcement and conduct regular inspections of express buses and their drivers' records. 'I hope the JPJ will conduct stricter and more frequent monitoring and thorough inspections. Let's not wait for such tragedies to happen in Sabah before we open our eyes,' he said. He concluded by stressing that passenger safety is a non-negotiable duty: 'Safety is not optional, it is an absolute obligation.' The tragic accident in Gerik remains under investigation as authorities work to determine its cause. — The Borneo Post

Malaysia and Poland strengthen trade and security cooperation

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Poland have agreed to strengthen their economic partnership by lowering trade barriers and boosting cooperation in key sectors such as agri-food. Both countries also pledged to work more closely to combat organised crime, illegal immigration, and human trafficking. In a joint statement following a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Polish President Andrzej Duda, both leaders said economic cooperation is an essential pillar of bilateral relations. "Both sides agreed to promote balanced trade by reducing economic barriers, enhancing consultation mechanisms between relevant ministries, and fostering collaboration amongst business communities. "The leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation and boosting bilateral trade in the agri-food sector," they added. Duda arrived in Malaysia yesterday for a three-day official visit to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation. In 2024, Poland ranked as Malaysia's 8th largest trading partner among European Union member states, with total bilateral trade rising by 19.5 per cent to RM5.7 billion compared to 2023. Malaysia's primary exports to Poland include electrical and electronic products, rubber products and machinery, while key imports from Poland consist of machinery, equipment and parts, electrical and electronic products and transport equipment. The leaders agreed to support for the swift advancement of the Malaysia-EU Free Trade Agreement (MEUFTA) negotiations and stressed the importance of concluding the agreement at the earliest opportunity. They also pledged to advance bilateral cooperation through joint initiatives in economic and digital transformation, focusing on key sectors including the digitalisation of public services, green transition, particularly the hydrogen economy and renewable energy among others. Anwar also welcomed Poland's swift ratification of the Framework Agreement on Partnership and Cooperation between Malaysia and the European Union (MEUPCA). The leaders also reiterated their commitment to deepen cooperation in security and defence, building upon cooperation in areas of mutual benefits. They reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the exchange of experiences and coordination in combating crime, including organised and international crime, illegal immigration, and human trafficking. Anwar and Duda also recognised the vital role of the private sector and people-to-people connections in strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation between Malaysia and Poland. "As such, they affirmed their commitment to expanding people-to-people exchanges in areas such as education, science, vocational training, culture, national heritage preservation, and tourism," they said. They also welcomed efforts and encouraged airlines of both countries, as well as tour operators, to enhance direct air connectivity and expand package tour offerings to promote tourism, facilitate cargo transport, and strengthen people-to-people exchanges between Malaysia and Poland. Duda also extended his thanks to Anwar and invited him to visit Poland, expressing hope that the friendly and productive dialogue between both countries will continue.
