The North Carolina Tar Heels are navigating through another tough season, being on the bubble just a month away from Selection Sunday. As the future of the program continues to be in focus, so does developments for a new arena.
Over the past year, there have been talks of either renovating the Dean Dome or building a new arena potentially off campus. And on Thursday, Inside Carolina broke the news of the way the university is leaning.
Per Greg Barnes of Inside Carolina, UNC is eyeing the North campus for a new basketball arena. This is a significant development in the process with all signs pointing to a new arena being built for the future:
University leadership is leaning toward building a new North Carolina men's basketball arena complex at the off-campus Carolina North location to replace the Dean E. Smith Center after months of consideration, according to multiple sources familiar with the process.
The Carolina North site is located at the northwest corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Estes Drive in Chapel Hill, where Horace Williams Airport was located until closing in May 2018.
When the process began with the working group from UNC, there were six site options revealed for a new arena including renovating the Smith Center or replacing it in the same location. The north campus was also one of the sites which is now where they are reportedly leaning per the report.
The idea is that each of the six options would provide a 16,000-seat maximum capacity. The Smith Center opened in 1986 with UNC playing 40 seasons in the arena.
More details on the situation will follow.

Oklahoma star pass rusher named to Bednarik Award watch list

The Oklahoma Sooners expect to have one of the best defenses in the nation in 2025 after a breakout year in 2024. A big reason for the lofty expectations is that Oklahoma will deploy one of college football's best pass rushers in the country, R Mason Thomas. Thomas is coming off of a season where he had nine sacks and led the Sooners in pressures. He landed on the preseason All-SEC team as voted on by the media and became one of the most disruptive players in the SEC last season. Ahead of year four with the Sooners, Thomas was included on the Bednarik Watch list for 2025. The Bednarik Award is given to the Defensive Player of the Year in college football. Colorado's Travis Hunter won the award in 2024. Former linebacker great Teddy Lehman is the only Oklahoma Sooners defender to win the award since its inception in 1995.
