Self-made millionaire's daily routine: Waking up at 4:45 a.m., sending emails during bedtime—hard work is a requirement 'to be successful'
A calculated daily routine helps Grede stay productive without sacrificing self-care, she said on a May 12 podcast episode of "The Skinny Confidential Him and Her."
"I'm pretty regimented with my routine and, because I have four kids, that's the only way I can do it," said Grede, 42, the co-founder and CEO of apparel brand Good American. "I'm very, very, very militant about not picking up my phone first thing [in the morning] ... So I'm like, what do I need to do today? What's important to me? And what do I think before I start getting messages from the world, from the news, from social [media]?"
Grede, who also co-founded apparel brand Skims and cleaning product company Safely, starts each day at 4:35 a.m., grabbing a cup of coffee before heading downstairs to her home gym, she said. She does a 90-minute workout five days per week, she said: "[It's] the only time no one's asking anything of me. That's like my meditation time ... I'm in my own space."From there, she gets her four kids ready for school, makes breakfast and corrals everyone at the table by 7:30 so they can spend at least 20 minutes together as a family before they go their separate ways for the day. By 8:30, Grede is at her office in California for a day of "back to back to back" meetings, she said.
The companies that she's operationally involved in — like Skims, Good American and Safely — are based in the same building, added Grede, who was named a CNBC Changemaker on February 24.
Grede gets home each day around 5:30 p.m., she said — then it's dinner, bath time and bed time for her kids. About three nights each week, she'll attend a work dinner or gathering with friends, get home and answer more emails before meditating, reading and turning in for the night, she said.
Staying busy, both personally and professionally, works for her, she said: "You have to work really, really, really, really, really hard if you want to be successful ... I'm a furious organizer and scheduler. I try to make the most of every single thing I'm doing."
Grede's routine contains elements of timeboxing, where you spend a specific amount of time tackling a task on your to-do list and stick to it. Highly successful people from Richard Branson to Michelle Obama have used the scheduling method to lead more productive lives.
Some experts particularly recommend scheduling time for dedicated focus, and breaks, into your calendar each day. It's "really critical" for productivity, Slack senior vice president of research and analytics Christina Janzer told CNBC Make It on Jan. 8, 2024.
For Grede, the idea is more simply to pack her workdays tightly enough to balance productivity and personal happiness outside the office, she said.
"When you're someone like me that, all day, people are taking [from you] ... I can't wait for someone to come and give something to me. I have to do that part for myself," said Grede. "I have to find those moments in my day because it ain't coming otherwise."

Startup visionary: Not every new company needs to be about AI—‘If you're good, good investors will see it'
Silicon Valley investor Paul Graham has a simple message for aspiring entrepreneurs: You don't need to focus on artificial intelligence to be successful. When betting on a startup's future potential, Graham is typically more swayed by his impression of its founders than the idea behind their business, the co-founder of startup accelerator Y Combinator wrote in a series of posts on social media platform X on August 10. His track record is substantial: He's backed more than 4,000 startups through Y Combinator since 2005, including Airbnb, Reddit and Twitch. "I haven't met all the startups in the current [Y Combinator] batch yet, but the two most impressive companies that I've seen so far are not working on AI," wrote Graham. "The lesson to take from this is not that AI is unimportant (it's very important), but that the founders matter more than the idea. The founders are the best predictor of how a company will do, not the industry it's in." He added: "If you want to start a startup to work on a non-AI idea, go ahead. If you're good, good investors will see it, and those are the only ones you want to convince anyway." AI-focused startups raised $104.3 billion from venture firms in the first half of 2025, matching the full-year total from 2024, according to PitchBook. Nearly half of the 140-plus companies in Y Combinator's current batch of startups are focused on AI, Pitchbook noted. Even Bill Gates would launch an "AI-centric" startup if he were to try and build a new company that could recreate Microsoft's success, he told CNBC Make It in September 2024: "Today, somebody could raise billions of dollars for a new AI company [that's just] a few sketch ideas." But entrepreneurs shouldn't feel like focusing on AI is the only way to attract investors who can help give their new companies a financial path to success, Graham wrote. He's preached a similar message for decades, long before the current AI boom — writing in a March 2009 blog post that a startup founder's entrepreneurial skill is their company's most reliable success indicator. "Bad founders" lack long-term, unshakeable passion and drive, while "good founders" are relentlessly resourceful, scrappy problem-solvers who'll always respond to a setback by refocusing on their next steps forward, Graham wrote in his blog post. "Good founders make things happen the way they want," wrote Graham. "Which is not to say they force things to happen in a predefined way. Good founders have a healthy respect for reality. But they are relentlessly resourceful. That's the closest I can get to the opposite of hapless."Some other investors agree: Josh Browder, who founded the $210 million online legal services company DoNotPay and has invested in over 100 startups, bases his investment decisions primarily on whether a startup's founder has a "deep connection" to the problem they're trying to solve, he said on June 30. "A lot of being an entrepreneur is like eating glass," said Browder, adding: "If they don't have a true connection to the problem, they're going to give up. So I look for signals that they really care about what they're building." The same ethos can apply — perhaps even more strongly — to non-tech startups and small businesses. Real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran, a judge on ABC's "Shark Tank," regularly invests in entrepreneurs she believes in, regardless of their industry or whether their business is turning a profit, for example. Billionaire entrepreneur and startup investor Mark Cuban, a longtime co-star of Corcoran's on the TV show, has lauded her for having "the best people skills" to identify which founders are worth investing in. "Her ability to recognize the good and bad in somebody, what they'll be like as an entrepreneur, what they'll be like as a person – Barbara picks up on that stuff in a minute," Cuban said on Corcoran's podcast "888-Barbara" in November 2019.

‘There is real damage being done': Rising Black unemployment could signal deeper economic woes
Advertisement As tariffs and mass deportations start to soften the economy, Black and Latino workers are vulnerable because they have lower rates of educational attainment and higher shares of low-wage and temporary jobs that are often the first to go, economists note. Enter Email Sign Up White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said Black and Latino unemployment hit then-record lows during President Trump's first term — though the Latino rate dropped to this level again, and the Black rate went lower, when President Biden was in office, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Rising Black unemployment is a result of the immigration surge during the Biden administration, she said. Advertisement 'Deportation efforts have opened up jobs previously held by illegal immigrants, and American-born workers have accounted for all job gains since the president took office in January,' she said in a statement Thursday. 'President Trump is implementing the same America First economic agenda that delivered historic job and wage growth in his first term.' Massachusetts has typically weathered economic downturns better than the country as a whole because its large education, health care, and life sciences industries have remained strong, said Mark Melnik, director of economic and policy research at the UMass Donahue Institute at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. But stagnant labor force growth in recent years and the pullback of federal grants have put the state in a more vulnerable position. And retail and hospitality almost always get 'whacked' during economic downturns, he said, because they rely on discretionary consumer spending — sectors that have more Black, brown, and female workers. 'That is a structural problem in the economy that will persist,' Melnik said. Data volatility is more common among smaller demographic groups because of the reduced sample size in monthly jobs reports, he noted. But there seems to be something 'recessiony' brewing. Black workers make up 18 percent of the federal workforce, compared to the 12 percent of jobs in the US labor force overall, according to the More than Advertisement Many of the people who lost their government jobs were probationary employees, who tend to be younger workers. And because the younger population is more diverse than the United States as a whole, it's likely that a sizable share of those who were let go were people of color, noted Max Stier, chief executive of the Partnership for Public Service, a Washington nonprofit focused on improving government. The Office of Personnel Management also recently removed demographic workforce data from its website, Stier said, which makes it difficult to determine if a disproportionate number of certain groups of people are being fired. Black women in particular are often the 'canary in the coal mine' because they've historically had the highest rate of labor force participation among women, said Katica Roy, chief executive of Pipeline, a Denver company that uses artificial intelligence to boost financial performance by closing equity gaps in the workforce. 'When cracks appear in the job market, they feel them first,' she said. Nearly Advertisement Since 'They can't not work,' Roy said, 'and our economy can't afford to lose them.' At the Department of Education, Black employees made up Webb-Prather, a lawyer and self-described 'cornerstone' of her family, had moved back to her impoverished hometown of East Cleveland last fall for the federal job — and to help take care of relatives with medical problems. She lives with her mother in a house riddled with leaks and mold and recently picked up a pizza to feed a group of neighborhood children who told her they'd only had cereal to eat that day. Webb-Prather, 36, is still being paid, but she doesn't know for how long. 'This money ain't just for me,' said Webb-Prather, who is Black. 'I'm feeding my family and I'm feeding the family ... across the street.' The backlash against DEI, which began before Trump was reelected and has been greatly exacerbated by his policies, is also having an impact, said Su Joun, principal of the Diversity@Workplace Consulting Group in Burlington. Professionals of color, who often reach out to her for career guidance, are being laid off at a higher rate than in the past, she said, which may be due to organizations paying less attention to their workforce demographics. Advertisement According to a July survey of 965 business leaders by the job website 'The desire to have good diversity numbers, maybe that pressure is eliminated,' Joun said. 'Without intervention, inequitable networks and bias often leave people of color out of the job market.' Leaders of color who were hired or promoted in the aftermath of George Floyd's murder in 2020 also haven't been around long enough to generate enough widespread support, or 'stickiness,' within the organization to save their jobs, Joun said, and may also be vulnerable to being replaced. Nonprofits, many of which employ as well as support people of color, are being hit by federal funding cutbacks, which could reduce opportunities on both fronts for Black and Latino workers. Even companies that aren't abandoning their DEI efforts are trying to understand how the steady stream of changes could affect them, which slows down the process of creating more equitable workforces, said Pratt Wiley, president of The Partnership, a Boston organization dedicated to developing professionals of color. 'There is real damage being done,' he said. 'This moment may pass, but it may be incredibly painful and have a lasting effect.'
