Self-made millionaire's daily routine: Waking up at 4:45 a.m., sending emails during bedtime—hard work is a requirement 'to be successful'
A calculated daily routine helps Grede stay productive without sacrificing self-care, she said on a May 12 podcast episode of "The Skinny Confidential Him and Her."
"I'm pretty regimented with my routine and, because I have four kids, that's the only way I can do it," said Grede, 42, the co-founder and CEO of apparel brand Good American. "I'm very, very, very militant about not picking up my phone first thing [in the morning] ... So I'm like, what do I need to do today? What's important to me? And what do I think before I start getting messages from the world, from the news, from social [media]?"
Grede, who also co-founded apparel brand Skims and cleaning product company Safely, starts each day at 4:35 a.m., grabbing a cup of coffee before heading downstairs to her home gym, she said. She does a 90-minute workout five days per week, she said: "[It's] the only time no one's asking anything of me. That's like my meditation time ... I'm in my own space."From there, she gets her four kids ready for school, makes breakfast and corrals everyone at the table by 7:30 so they can spend at least 20 minutes together as a family before they go their separate ways for the day. By 8:30, Grede is at her office in California for a day of "back to back to back" meetings, she said.
The companies that she's operationally involved in — like Skims, Good American and Safely — are based in the same building, added Grede, who was named a CNBC Changemaker on February 24.
Grede gets home each day around 5:30 p.m., she said — then it's dinner, bath time and bed time for her kids. About three nights each week, she'll attend a work dinner or gathering with friends, get home and answer more emails before meditating, reading and turning in for the night, she said.
Staying busy, both personally and professionally, works for her, she said: "You have to work really, really, really, really, really hard if you want to be successful ... I'm a furious organizer and scheduler. I try to make the most of every single thing I'm doing."
Grede's routine contains elements of timeboxing, where you spend a specific amount of time tackling a task on your to-do list and stick to it. Highly successful people from Richard Branson to Michelle Obama have used the scheduling method to lead more productive lives.
Some experts particularly recommend scheduling time for dedicated focus, and breaks, into your calendar each day. It's "really critical" for productivity, Slack senior vice president of research and analytics Christina Janzer told CNBC Make It on Jan. 8, 2024.
For Grede, the idea is more simply to pack her workdays tightly enough to balance productivity and personal happiness outside the office, she said.
"When you're someone like me that, all day, people are taking [from you] ... I can't wait for someone to come and give something to me. I have to do that part for myself," said Grede. "I have to find those moments in my day because it ain't coming otherwise."

Startup visionary: Not every new company needs to be about AI—‘If you're good, good investors will see it'
Silicon Valley investor Paul Graham has a simple message for aspiring entrepreneurs: You don't need to focus on artificial intelligence to be successful. When betting on a startup's future potential, Graham is typically more swayed by his impression of its founders than the idea behind their business, the co-founder of startup accelerator Y Combinator wrote in a series of posts on social media platform X on August 10. His track record is substantial: He's backed more than 4,000 startups through Y Combinator since 2005, including Airbnb, Reddit and Twitch. "I haven't met all the startups in the current [Y Combinator] batch yet, but the two most impressive companies that I've seen so far are not working on AI," wrote Graham. "The lesson to take from this is not that AI is unimportant (it's very important), but that the founders matter more than the idea. The founders are the best predictor of how a company will do, not the industry it's in." He added: "If you want to start a startup to work on a non-AI idea, go ahead. If you're good, good investors will see it, and those are the only ones you want to convince anyway." AI-focused startups raised $104.3 billion from venture firms in the first half of 2025, matching the full-year total from 2024, according to PitchBook. Nearly half of the 140-plus companies in Y Combinator's current batch of startups are focused on AI, Pitchbook noted. Even Bill Gates would launch an "AI-centric" startup if he were to try and build a new company that could recreate Microsoft's success, he told CNBC Make It in September 2024: "Today, somebody could raise billions of dollars for a new AI company [that's just] a few sketch ideas." But entrepreneurs shouldn't feel like focusing on AI is the only way to attract investors who can help give their new companies a financial path to success, Graham wrote. He's preached a similar message for decades, long before the current AI boom — writing in a March 2009 blog post that a startup founder's entrepreneurial skill is their company's most reliable success indicator. "Bad founders" lack long-term, unshakeable passion and drive, while "good founders" are relentlessly resourceful, scrappy problem-solvers who'll always respond to a setback by refocusing on their next steps forward, Graham wrote in his blog post. "Good founders make things happen the way they want," wrote Graham. "Which is not to say they force things to happen in a predefined way. Good founders have a healthy respect for reality. But they are relentlessly resourceful. That's the closest I can get to the opposite of hapless."Some other investors agree: Josh Browder, who founded the $210 million online legal services company DoNotPay and has invested in over 100 startups, bases his investment decisions primarily on whether a startup's founder has a "deep connection" to the problem they're trying to solve, he said on June 30. "A lot of being an entrepreneur is like eating glass," said Browder, adding: "If they don't have a true connection to the problem, they're going to give up. So I look for signals that they really care about what they're building." The same ethos can apply — perhaps even more strongly — to non-tech startups and small businesses. Real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran, a judge on ABC's "Shark Tank," regularly invests in entrepreneurs she believes in, regardless of their industry or whether their business is turning a profit, for example. Billionaire entrepreneur and startup investor Mark Cuban, a longtime co-star of Corcoran's on the TV show, has lauded her for having "the best people skills" to identify which founders are worth investing in. "Her ability to recognize the good and bad in somebody, what they'll be like as an entrepreneur, what they'll be like as a person – Barbara picks up on that stuff in a minute," Cuban said on Corcoran's podcast "888-Barbara" in November 2019.

37 Cheap Versions Of Expensive Products
A scoop neck top reviewers love because it has the same buttery feel and fit as a popular Skims top. The only huge difference is the price and number of colors that this one comes in! A midi corset dress that'll make your cottagecore heart flutter and have you feeling like a modern-day princess. It looks just like the House of CB Carmen dress that was trending on TikTok (and goes for $225!?) and even has the same features, like a back cinch and front tie. L'Oreal's Lumi Glotion — this illuminating moisturizer enhances your skin's natural glow with its shimmering color tint, so you can achieve that ~sun-kissed~ look without having to roast in the heat for hours. Reviewers say it's just like the Drunk Elephant bronzing drops — and maybe even better! An expensive-looking faux-leather belt to tie your entire outfit together. The golden accent will turn your 'fit into a ~masterpiece~. Is it Gucci? No. Is it an affordable lookalike that does the same thing? Absolutely. Nyx Fat Oil Lip Drip that delivers up to 12 hours of hydration (it's infused with vegan squalane, raspberry, and cloudberry oils) while giving you a glossy, tinted look — we love a 2-in-1! If you love Dior's Lip Oil or have been wanting to try it, reviewers say this is even better (for your lips AND wallet). A pair of lightweight legging-style joggers perfect for lounging around, running errands... basically any casual activity because they're just that comfy. They feature two pockets to store your phone, wallet, and keys, and reviewers can't help but compare them to Lululemon's Align joggers. LivaClean Superstar pimple patches that are so cute, you might not even be that mad at the next pimple you get since you'll have an excuse to put one of these bad boys on. They look just like Starface patches, but for a fraction of the price — and reviewers say these work way better for shrinking blemishes and helping them heal! Or a pack of 40 acne patches (an affordable alternative to Mighty Patch) so you can tackle that pesky pimple head-on. These discreet patches help conceal pimples and prevent you from picking at them while the hydrocolloid absorbs the gunk inside — so they can actually heal faster! They're great for daytime or overnight use. A spandex-blend slip maxi dress, because wouldn't it be nice to look dressy but stay comfy at the same time? Thanks to this Skims lookalike, you can! Reviewers *love* how the material is just as soft as that brand's, and some even say it's better! A pair of stylish teardrop earrings that look almost the same as the Bottega Veneta ones, minus the $$$ — both are even gold-plated. Even though they look quite heavy, reviewers say they're super lightweight and don't affect their sensitive ears! Wear these all day, every day, and know that you look like an absolute ~ICON~. Cult-fave E.l.f. Poreless Putty primer, which smoothly glides onto your skin and blurs your pores, giving you the perfect base layer for your makeup to grip onto. Its squalane formula keeps your skin hydrated while looking matte, and reviewers find it *quite* similar to Tatcha's Silk Canvas primer and other big-name brands — without the $$$. Double buckle waterproof sandals, so comfy that reviewers even call them ~BirkenCrocs~ because they feel like a combination of the two. The straps are adjustable, so you can tailor the fit to your liking and wear 'em snug or loose. Plus, they're waterproof, so you can step in puddles or lounge by the pool without damaging them! Or a pair of Cushionaire cork-bottom sandals if you love the look of the Mayari Birks but aren't the biggest fan of the price. These bbs have the exact same strap design and 100% genuine suede soles, so you'll be able to walk around 24/7 and stay as comfy as possible. A trio of hydrating lip sleeping masks, notably very similar to the Laneige ones (but much more budget-friendly). Each mask nourishes, hydrates, and smooths out your lips overnight, thanks to the berry extract and vitamin C formula — and you get three flavors to try in one set! Your pout will look so supple, it'll leave even Angelina Jolie jealous. Or a soothing (and also Laneige-like) Jelly Lip Melt that looks like those delicious Jell-O cups we had as kids — ah, the nostalgia. It'll add some gloss to your lips and leave 'em feeling hydrated and plump all day long. A bodycon jumpsuit with flared bottoms that'll make you look like an influencer off-duty. It's perfect for a low-impact workout or any casual outing, and also veryyy similar to the Aritzia Butter jumpsuit for a fraction of the price — no one would ever know the difference. Nyx Brow Glue to sculpt your arches so you can craft your desired shape, volume, and texture. From natural to feathered brows, you can achieve anything with this baby. It doesn't get tacky or flaky like other glues *and* holds up well against sweat. Reviewers compare this to Benefit's brow gel and even prefer this one! Slingback heels guaranteed to girl-bossify you. Pair 'em up with a darling brunch dress or some office slacks, and you'll be radiating sophistication. OK, sure, they're not REAL Chanel, but they certainly look quite similar — even reviewers say so! Some bestselling Essence Lash Princess mascara to enhance your beautiful lashes with its cone-shaped fiber brush — with such dramatic (+ clump-free) results, you won't need extensions or falsies ever again. Reviewers swear it delivers the same (if not better) results as name-brand mascaras for less than $5 — the 252,000+ 5-star ratings don't lie! A cropped, padded workout tank if you love the Lululemon look and material, but your bank account says ✨ no ✨. Fortunately, reviewers say this budget-friendly top is v comparable to Lulu in terms of its look and material, *AND* there are so many adorable colors to choose from (or just get one in each color)! And another cropped tank with padding that looks EXACTLY like the Lululemon Align tank top — I'm actually shook! It has the same neckline *and* removable padding, and it's won over 28,000+ 5-star reviewers with its comfort and support. TruSkin vitamin C serum here to help even your skin tone and reduce the appearance of dark spots, fine lines, and wrinkles. Over 92,000 (!!) reviewers have given it 5 stars for its truly magical results, and many love it as a budget-friendly alternative to pricey faves like SkinCeuticals. A belt bag to bring along on all your upcoming festival and vacation plans. It'll hold your necessities and let you go ~hands free~ whether you sling it over your shoulder or around your waist. Plus, it comes with a hidden pocket in the back for your most valuable belongings — those pickpockets have no chance! And yes, it closely resembles the Lululemon belt bag — reviewers say the only major difference is the missing logo. A cubic zirconia cuff delightfully similar to the Cartier Love Bracelet, which goes for (...hold on, I need to pick my jaw back up...) over $17,000?! Prepared to be absolutely tickled because this one's just $12 — and reviewers love that, unlike the way-too-expensive version, you don't need to screw it on! And, on that note, a cubic zirconia ring that'll make you go, "Cartier Love Ring who?" It's a simple yet elegant, and understated yet ~bougie~ piece that'll never go out of style. If you take the price of this one and subtract it from the Cartier one... well, I'm not gonna do that math, but the point is I just saved you a whole lot of money. A popular checkerboard throw, because there's nothing better than wrapping yourself up in a cloud-like throw, sipping on a pipin' hot cup of tea, and rewatching Gossip Girl for the ninth time. This truly gives the Barefoot Dreams blanket a run for its money because reviewers say it's *just* as soft and looks the same! Chic Steve Madden sandals perfect for your summer vacay in Barcelona. And if you don't have a trip booked yet, why not do it now with the money you've saved buying these shoes instead of the $700+ Hermès ones that look almost identical. 👀 A sleeveless halter bodysuit if you want to feel comfy as heck in that buttery-soft Skims material but don't want to shell out the money for it. Luckily for you, this is incredibly similar, and some reviewers say they even prefer it over the real deal! You'll never find yourself overpaying for this closet staple again. Physicians Formula Diamond Dust translucent powder that creates the ultimate shimmer on your cheeks, nose, eyes, and anywhere else you want to brush this baby on. It'll give you a glassy, dewy finish and leave you ✨ glowing ✨. Reviewers compare this to Fenty Beauty's Diamond Bomb highlighter (which is $40+) and rave about how similar it is! Mane Club One Hit Wonder 10-in-1 Leave-In Spray, a perf alternative for It's A 10, according to reviewers, because it does the exact same thing for a way more affordable price. This bb literally does it all — it conditions, detangles, hydrates, strengthens, and everything else your haircare routine needs. A pair of slip-on loafer mules that'll add a sophisticated touch to your look. You can wear these beauties anywhere, and they give that iconic Gucci look with the gold buckle clasps. Plus, this price is unbeatable — um, I think you need these now! An elevated laptop tote bag so you can strut in style while having everything you need with you, because it's just that roomy and versatile. It's the perfect alternative to the Béis Work Tote, which is great and all, but the price is a little *too* steep. Some reviewers even like this one better! Some extra-soft AOA Studio makeup sponges to blend your foundation, concealer, and other makeup flawlessly. Reviewers rave about this affordable swap for popular options like Beautyblender — you can't beat getting a pack of six for under $10! A classic pleated tennis skirt with built-in shorts — throw this on, and you'll look like you're ready to hit the country club in high fashion. Reviewers consider it a great alternative to not only Nike but also Alo and Aritzia — say what?! Oversized square sunglasses that'll have you strutting down the street to "Rich Girl" because that's what you'll look like — but no one will guess that you actually spent under $20 on these Bottega-like sunnies. (They might, however, do a double-take and wonder if they know you from a TV show.) The glasses have polarized lenses and UV protection, so your eyes will stay safe from the harsh sun! A simple, gorgeous tennis bracelet because even though "diamonds are a girl's best friend," they may just be a little out of your price range — not to worry, because cubic zirconia isn't! Reviewers swear this looks like the real deal (ahem, Swarovski) and doesn't tarnish. A loungewear set that def gives off Skims vibes. Lounge around in style because you're just that ~bad and bougie.~ One reviewer even says that as soon as she put it on, she felt "like a woman who's got her life together." So *basically* if you want to rot on the couch all day but still look like you have your life in check, you need this!

‘There is real damage being done': Rising Black unemployment could signal deeper economic woes
Advertisement As tariffs and mass deportations start to soften the economy, Black and Latino workers are vulnerable because they have lower rates of educational attainment and higher shares of low-wage and temporary jobs that are often the first to go, economists note. Black workers make up a Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said Black and Latino unemployment hit then-record lows during President Trump's first term — though the Latino rate dropped to this level again, and the Black rate went lower, when President Biden was in office, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Rising Black unemployment is a result of the immigration surge during the Biden administration, she said. Advertisement 'Deportation efforts have opened up jobs previously held by illegal immigrants, and American-born workers have accounted for all job gains since the president took office in January,' she said in a statement Thursday. 'President Trump is implementing the same America First economic agenda that delivered historic job and wage growth in his first term.' Massachusetts has typically weathered economic downturns better than the country as a whole because its large education, health care, and life sciences industries have remained strong, said Mark Melnik, director of economic and policy research at the UMass Donahue Institute at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. But stagnant labor force growth in recent years and the pullback of federal grants have put the state in a more vulnerable position. And retail and hospitality almost always get 'whacked' during economic downturns, he said, because they rely on discretionary consumer spending — sectors that have more Black, brown, and female workers. 'That is a structural problem in the economy that will persist,' Melnik said. Data volatility is more common among smaller demographic groups because of the reduced sample size in monthly jobs reports, he noted. But there seems to be something 'recessiony' brewing. Black workers make up 18 percent of the federal workforce, compared to the 12 percent of jobs in the US labor force overall, according to the More than Advertisement Many of the people who lost their government jobs were probationary employees, who tend to be younger workers. And because the younger population is more diverse than the United States as a whole, it's likely that a sizable share of those who were let go were people of color, noted Max Stier, chief executive of the Partnership for Public Service, a Washington nonprofit focused on improving government. The Office of Personnel Management also recently removed demographic workforce data from its website, Stier said, which makes it difficult to determine if a disproportionate number of certain groups of people are being fired. Black women in particular are often the 'canary in the coal mine' because they've historically had the highest rate of labor force participation among women, said Katica Roy, chief executive of Pipeline, a Denver company that uses artificial intelligence to boost financial performance by closing equity gaps in the workforce. 'When cracks appear in the job market, they feel them first,' she said. Nearly Advertisement Since 'They can't not work,' Roy said, 'and our economy can't afford to lose them.' At the Department of Education, Black employees made up Webb-Prather, a lawyer and self-described 'cornerstone' of her family, had moved back to her impoverished hometown of East Cleveland last fall for the federal job — and to help take care of relatives with medical problems. She lives with her mother in a house riddled with leaks and mold and recently picked up a pizza to feed a group of neighborhood children who told her they'd only had cereal to eat that day. Webb-Prather, 36, is still being paid, but she doesn't know for how long. 'This money ain't just for me,' said Webb-Prather, who is Black. 'I'm feeding my family and I'm feeding the family ... across the street.' The backlash against DEI, which began before Trump was reelected and has been greatly exacerbated by his policies, is also having an impact, said Su Joun, principal of the Diversity@Workplace Consulting Group in Burlington. Professionals of color, who often reach out to her for career guidance, are being laid off at a higher rate than in the past, she said, which may be due to organizations paying less attention to their workforce demographics. Advertisement According to a July survey of 965 business leaders by the job website 'The desire to have good diversity numbers, maybe that pressure is eliminated,' Joun said. 'Without intervention, inequitable networks and bias often leave people of color out of the job market.' Leaders of color who were hired or promoted in the aftermath of George Floyd's murder in 2020 also haven't been around long enough to generate enough widespread support, or 'stickiness,' within the organization to save their jobs, Joun said, and may also be vulnerable to being replaced. Nonprofits, many of which employ as well as support people of color, are being hit by federal funding cutbacks, which could reduce opportunities on both fronts for Black and Latino workers. Even companies that aren't abandoning their DEI efforts are trying to understand how the steady stream of changes could affect them, which slows down the process of creating more equitable workforces, said Pratt Wiley, president of The Partnership, a Boston organization dedicated to developing professionals of color. 'There is real damage being done,' he said. 'This moment may pass, but it may be incredibly painful and have a lasting effect.'
