Bus Rapid Transit answer to NCR traffic woes — transport advocate
A transport advocacy group on Tuesday pushed for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, saying that it has the potential to address mass transportation shortage and perennial traffic woes in Metro Manila.
According to Gonggom Sitanggang of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), public commuting can be more inclusive and accessible across the metro even though there is already the existence of the EDSA Busway system.
Sitanggang pointed out that with significantly lower capital cost and shorter construction time, the BRT can carry more passengers than rail systems.
'As cities grow, BRT enables efficient, inclusive, and scalable public transport that responds to today's challenges and tomorrow's demand,' Sitanggang said.
He said the BRT could carry five times more passengers compared to a regular bus, which is ideal for densely populated areas like Metro Manila.
The BRT is a bus service system designed to have higher capacity, dedicated platforms and pre-ticketing features, compared to a conventional bus system.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) earlier said it is eyeing to replicate the EDSA Busway model in other major thoroughfares in Metro Manila, particularly España Boulevard in Manila and Quezon Avenue in Quezon City. — RF, GMA Integrated News

Cebu Bus Rapid Transit pilot ops start September — DOTr
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Wednesday said it is set to launch the pilot operations of the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (Cebu-BRT) in September. In a statement, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said at least three stations of the mass transit system will be operational come September, namely Fuente, Cebu Normal University and Cebu South Bus Terminal Station. Dizon said at least 70,000 commuters are expected to benefit from the Cebu BRT's pilot operations. Meanwhile, the construction for the Cebu Capitol station will follow, after finalizing its detailed engineering design to make it a median station from the previous curbside configuration, according to the Transportation chief. Dizon also expressed gratitude to the Cebu Provincial local government for coordinating with the DOTr in addressing issues of the project. The phases 2A and 3A of the Cebu BRT which are composed of 13 stations and 62 bus stops will be completed before President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s term ends in 2028, according to the Transport chief. — Ted Cordero/RF, GMA Integrated News

DOTr eyes España-Quezon Avenue busway system
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is eyeing to replicate the EDSA Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System or EDSA Busway model in other major thoroughfares in Metro Manila, particularly España Boulevard in Manila and Quezon Avenue in Quezon City. 'We need more of those (BRTs),' Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said at the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines (EJAP) Infrastructure Forum in Makati City. 'To me, the most viable and the most needed one is España to Quezon Avenue. That is very important. Busway [at] España, Quezon Avenue. That is going to be very viable…That's wide enough for a busway,' Dizon said. The Transportation chief said there are currently no buses serving commuters, especially students, in the España-Quezon Avenue stretch. 'We're doing FS (feasibility study) now,' he said, adding tthat the completion of the study would be 'hopefully next year.' Asked if the España-Quezon Avenue Busway will be operates by the private sector, Dizon said, 'I think we have to do it government muna…then we'll privatize the O&M (operations and maintenance).'
