Four months after Ippei Mizuhara was sentenced to nearly five years in prison for stealing from Shohei Ohtani to pay for gambling losses, the saga comes to life once again.
Former three-time All-Star and 2005 American League Manager of the Year Ozzie Guillen is speaking out about the situation, and he believes Ohtani was the one secretly gambling.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 05: Shohei Ohtani #17 of the Los Angeles Dodgers at bat against the New York Mets in the first inning at Dodger Stadium on June 05, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. More"Everyone knows that Shohei Ohtani took a chance (by gambling) and they (Major League Baseball) protected him," Guillen told Fernando Ballesteros of Pure Baseball in Puerto Rico.
Mizuhara was sentenced to 57 months in prison for stealing from Ohtani back in February just before the season started. The Dodgers have stood by Ohtani's side as prosecutors have stated multiple times Ohtani was the victim in this situation.
However, many baseball fans on social media, particularly fans of rival teams, believe what Guillen is saying to be true. There is still some belief in the baseball world that Mizuhara took one for the team to prevent Ohtani from being banned.
Ohtani has since moved on from the situation as he continues to produce a strong season at the plate for the Dodgers with a slash line of .295/.389/.648. He's totaled 23 home runs and 39 RBI as the designated hitter this season.
Guillen has always been known by baseball fans for speaking his mind, so this statement shouldn't come as a surprise. As of now, though, there's zero evidence to support his claim. It could be out of spite, jealousy or a combination of both.

Mets left fielder Brandon Nimmo removed in 2nd inning vs. Nationals with stiff neck

WASHINGTON (AP) — New York Mets left fielder Brandon Nimmo was removed in the second inning against Washington with a stiff neck on Wednesday night. There was no obvious play where Nimmo was hurt. He grounded into a double play to end the first inning and did not have a chance in the field. Starling Marte replaced Nimmo in left. Nimmo is batting .254 with 20 homers and 68 RBIs. He has been durable, playing in 122 of the Mets' 126 games through Wednesday. He has played no fewer than 151 games in each of the past three seasons. ___

Braves Draft Buzz? Atlanta Predicted To Land 18-Home Run Star Infielder

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. This season hasn't really gone to plan for the Atlanta Braves. Instead of sitting at the top of the National League, the Braves are set to miss the postseason. Fortunately for them, the offseason will bring them a clean slate to start over next season. But Atlanta needs to build its foundation from the ground up over the next few years. This idea starts with having successful MLB Draft classes, especially since the Braves will likely pick at the top of the draft next year. Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter recently put together an early mock draft for the 2026 MLB Draft and predicted the Braves would land star infielder Justin Lebron at pick No. 4. WASHINGTON, DC - SEPTEMBER 11: A view of the Atlanta Braves logo on a baseball cap during the game against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park on September 11, 2024 in Washington, DC. WASHINGTON, DC - SEPTEMBER 11: A view of the Atlanta Braves logo on a baseball cap during the game against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park on September 11, 2024 in Washington, DC."After a loud true freshman season in which he hit .338/.429/.546 with 12 home runs, Lebron posted a 1.058 OPS with 18 doubles, 18 home runs and 72 RBI as a sophomore, though his strikeout rate jumped from 20.9 to 24.2 percent," Reuter wrote. "He can crush a mistake and has the tools to be a well-rounded offensive and defensive player. If he shows a more refined approach next spring, he will be a candidate to go No. 1 overall." Lebron is a very interesting prospect to look into. He's shown a willingness to swing and miss in order to generate his impressive power numbers, but it's not concerning enough to turn scouts off him. He's a good defender with solid speed and athleticism. If he continues to show improvements in his junior season, there's a chance he looks like a true five-tool prospect. At that point, he becomes a can't-miss prospect for the Braves at the top of the first round. More MLB: Reds' Elly De La Cruz Sends 3-Word Message On Quad Injury Concerns

Mets' Trade Deadline Addition Could Leave For Orioles After Latest Development

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Mets acquired All-Star closer Ryan Helsley at the trade deadline, but he will be a free agent after the season. Helsley led all of baseball in saves last season with 49. He had 21 saves with the St. Louis Cardinals this year before he was traded. He has not been as sharp this season, though, and he has a 7.11 ERA with the Mets so far. The Baltimore Orioles will be without Felix Bautista all of next season after he underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum and rotator cuff. They lost their All-Star closer and could be in the market for a new one now. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 01: Ryan Helsley #56 of the New York Mets reacts after a strike out during the ninth inning of the game against the San Francisco Giants at Citi Field on August 01, 2025 in New York City. MoreFanSided's Chris Landers tabbed Helsley as a fit for the Orioles now that Bautista is on the shelf for next season. "Helsley's fastball is getting uncharacteristically hit around right now, but it's still an electric offering when he's locating it, consistently cracking triple digits," wrote Landers. "The chase rate and K rate are still elite, and he just turned 31 last month. The odds are good that he'll be back to looking like an All-Star closer next season, and who knows, maybe his current struggles will depress his market a little bit." After making the postseason last year, the Orioles have had a terrible year this season. They could be looking to get back on track in a hurry, and adding a two-time All-Star closer to replace Bautista will help. Helsley also won the Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year Award last season. More MLB: Red Sox Pitcher Has 4-Word Admission on Season as Troubles Persist
