Trump vows to pull US out of Ukraine ‘mess'

Russia Todaya day ago
The US is working hard to withdraw itself from the 'mess' of the Ukraine conflict, President Donald Trump told reporters on Tuesday.
When asked why the US should keep funding Ukraine as Kiev grows increasingly more coercive in its draft campaign, Trump responded: 'This is Biden's war. This is not my war. I'm here to get us out of it. It's a mess, and I'm here to get us out.'
The journalist was referring to Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky's recent decree allowing the enlistment of men over 60.
'I haven't heard that, when you say about 60-year-old men,' Trump said. 'But this is Biden's war. And we're working very hard to get us out.'
In recent weeks, the US president has threatened to impose 100% tariffs and secondary sanctions targeting Russia's trading partners in an effort to pressure Moscow into accepting a ceasefire with Kiev – measures which Russia has denounced as illegal.

Asked whether he was prepared to follow through on his threats, Trump said a decision would be made after a scheduled meeting in Russia this week involving his special envoy, Steve Witkoff.
'I never said a percentage [for tariffs], but we'll be doing quite a bit of that,' Trump said. 'We have a meeting with Russia tomorrow [on Wednesday]… We'll make that determination at that time.'
Earlier in the day, Trump said he will 'substantially' raise tariffs on Indian imports over the next 24 hours, due to New Delhi's continued purchases of Russian crude. He had previously announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods, scheduled to take effect on Friday.
India, one the biggest importers of Russian oil alongside China, has promised to 'safeguard its national interests and economic security' in response to the tariff threat.
Beijing responded by vowing to 'defend its sovereignty' in response to what it described as 'coercion and pressure.'
Moscow has condemned Trump's tariff threats as violations of other nations' rights.
'We believe that sovereign states should have, and do have, the right to choose their own trade partners,' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.

India and Russia eye deeper economic cooperation amid Trump tariffs

India and Russia have discussed ways of strengthening their economic partnership, focusing on cooperation in rare earths, aircraft parts manufacturing, and railways, officials said in a statement on Wednesday. The discussions were held during the 11th Session of the India-Russia Working Group on Modernization and Industrial Cooperation in New Delhi, which coincided with US President Donald Trump's announcements of 50% tariffs on Indian imports for New Delhi's continued purchases of Russian oil. The working group focused on collaboration in science and technology, including wind tunnel facilities, aircraft engines, and carbon fiber tech. Opportunities in coal gasification and industrial infrastructure were also discussed. The meeting concluded with the signing of a protocol which reaffirmed the strong strategic partnership between the two countries. Meanwhile, Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval is in Moscow for a visit aimed at strengthening the defense and security partnership between Russia and India. Indian media reports have indicated that Doval will discuss the acquisition of more S-400 systems for India. New Delhi currently has three systems – part of a larger order of five purchased from Russia. They were put to use during the country's brief military confrontation with Pakistan in May. Doval last visited Moscow in September 2024 and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with both sides highlighting the growing partnership. 'Our special privileged strategic partnership is gaining momentum and growing stronger, which we are delighted about. We are also pleased to see India's success in strengthening its statehood and advancing its economy under Prime Minister Modi's leadership,' Putin had told Doval. Following Doval's visit, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar is also expected in Moscow later this month for talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, sources told RT.

Modi to visit China amid Trump tariff onslaught

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to travel to China in late August and is expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, a government source has confirmed to RT. This comes after US President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, with tariffs on some imports reaching 50%. The Indian Express earlier reported, citing sources, that Modi would attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1, adding that a meeting between the two leaders could take place on the sidelines. Modi last went to China in 2018, also for the SCO summit. Since then, ties between the two countries have deteriorated, in part due to bloody clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in disputed areas of the Galwan Valley. DETAILS TO FOLLOW

US soldier accused of trying to give tank data to Russia

A US Army soldier has been arrested for allegedly trying to pass classified details about M1A2 Abrams tanks to Russia in exchange for citizenship, the Department of Justice has said. The US sent 31 M1A2 Abrams tanks to Ukraine in 2023, although a significant number have been knocked out. In a statement on Wednesday, the DOJ said Taylor Adam Lee, 22, an active-duty service member based in Fort Bliss, Texas, was charged with 'attempted transmission of national defense information to a foreign adversary' – which included technical details and vulnerabilities of the main US battle tank – as well as 'attempted export of controlled technical data without a license.' The DOJ accused Lee, who has Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information security clearance, of sending Russia technical data online in June and expressing willingness to assist Moscow. He allegedly told Russian officials: 'The USA is not happy with me for trying to expose their weaknesses… At this point I'd even volunteer to assist the Russian Federation when I'm there in any way.' Prosecutors claim Lee then met in July with someone he believed to be a Russian government representative, during which he allegedly handed over an SD card containing technical data on the Abrams tank, another unidentified armored fighting vehicle, and combat operations. Lee also allegedly discussed the possibility of providing Russia with a specific piece of hardware inside the M1A2 Abrams tank, later reportedly delivering it at a storage unit in El Paso and sending a message to an alleged Russian official that read 'Mission accomplished.' Moscow has yet to comment on the allegations. The US provided Ukraine with 31 M1A2 Abrams tanks in the autumn of 2023, although multiple reports have indicated they were ill-suited for conditions on the ground and vulnerable to drones. Moreover, the tanks were reportedly provided in an export variant lacking the latest upgraded depleted uranium armor and fire control systems. A significant portion of them have reportedly been destroyed, with Russia showcasing one Abrams at an exhibition last year.
