Manipur Guv, Union Home Secy review India-Myanmar border fencing; law & order situation
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and visiting Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan held a high-level meeting and discussed ongoing fencing work along the India-Myanmar border and the overall law and order situation in the state, officials said on Tuesday.
A Raj Bhavan official said that the Governor and the Union Home Secretary held high-level review meetings late on Monday night and the discussion focussed on key issues concerning the state, including ongoing fencing work along the 398 km India-Myanmar border with Manipur and overall law and order situation in the state.
'The review meeting deliberated the progress of the border fencing along the International Border and the law and order situation in the state. Maintenance of public order and developmental efforts were the highlights of these meetings,' the official said.
Another official said that the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) stepped up India-Myanmar border fencing work near Moreh town in Manipur's Tengnoupal district last year. The fencing work would be done phase-wise, he said.
The border fencing work was undertaken by 'Project Sewak' of the Border Roads Task Force (BRTF) which is also looking after road construction in Nagaland and Manipur. The BRTF is a unit under the BRO.
Monday night's meeting also discussed relief and rehabilitation efforts for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), who are now sheltered in various relief camps since the ethnic violence broke out in the northeastern state on May 3, 2023.
The official said that during the meeting, the ongoing relief measures for IDPs in both the hills and the valley region were reviewed.
A detailed assessment was made of the current facilities being provided to IDPs, the status of rehabilitation efforts, and the long-term plan for their permanent resettlement.
The state government has established over 300 relief camps in Imphal valley and hilly regions to provide shelter to 59,415 men, women and children, who were displaced after the ethnic violence broke out in the state two years ago.
Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Kumar Deka, Joint Secretary (North East), Ministry of Home Affairs, Manipur Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh, Security Advisor K Singh, Commissioner (Home) N. Ashok Kumar, Secretary to the Governor, Deputy Commissioners of various districts, and other senior administrative and security officials attended the vital meeting.
Home Secretary Govind Mohan accompanied by Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Kumar Deka arrived in Manipur on Monday and visited two relief camps in Churachandpur district and supervised the well-being of the violence-hit displaced people.
The Home Secretary also inaugurated two creche-cum-children's libraries for children and a women's tailoring program, both aimed at supporting and empowering women and children residing in the relief camps.

A major encounter broke out on Thursday morning between security forces and Maoists at the Indravati National Park in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district. The ongoing encounter started after a joint team of security forces undertook an operation based on specific intelligence about the presence of senior Maoist cadres in the area. This comes nearly a fortnight after Nambala Keshava Rao, alias Basava Raju, the general secretary of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist), was gunned down in an encounter along with 27 others in the jungles of Abujhmad region in Narayanpur district on May 21. Indravati National Park has seen two other major encounters this year between Maoists and security forces. On February 9, two security forces personnel and 31 Maoists were killed in an encounter at the national park. Before that, on January 12, five Maoists, including two women, were killed in an encounter with security forces. Back in August 2023, sources in the security forces had told The Indian Express that Maoists were recruiting new cadres in the national park, Abujhmad, and the Kanker-Narayapur inter-district border near Maharashtra. The fresh recruits are also being trained in the national park, the sources had said, adding that they had been using drones to track security forces. Security forces have since been trying to free the national park area of Maoists. Also, they want to build a bridge over the Indravati river that would connect the two states and help boost economic activities. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has set a deadline of March 2026 to eradicate Left Wing Extremism (LWE) from India. The security forces this year till date have 202 Maoists, of which 185 were in Bastar region alone — Bijapur is a part of Bastar region. This year has also seen the death of 17 security personnel in attacks by Maoists.

PM Modi launches Aravalli Green Wall Project, expands 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign
Prime Minister Narendra Modi planted a sapling at the Bhagwan Mahavir Vanasthali Park here on World Environment Day on Thursday (June 5, 2025), extending the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign and launching a special initiative to reforest the 700-km Aravalli mountain range that stretches from Delhi to Gujarat. In a post on X, the Prime Minister said the Aravalli range is one of the oldest on the planet, covering Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi, and that the last several years have brought to the fore several environmental challenges relating to the range, which his government is committed to mitigating. "Our focus is to rejuvenate areas linked with this range. We are going to work with the respective local administrations and emphasise things such as improving water systems, curbing dust storms, stopping eastward expansion of the Thar desert and more," he said. "In the Aravalli range and beyond, in addition to the traditional planting methods, we will encourage new techniques, especially in urban and semi-urban areas where there are space constraints. Plantation activities will be geo-tagged and monitored on the Meri LiFE portal," he said. The Prime Minister called upon the youth to take part in the movement and contribute to increasing the planet's green cover. He also flagged off electric buses under the Delhi government's sustainable transport initiative. "This will also improve 'Ease of Living' for the people of Delhi," the Prime minister said. The Aravalli Green Wall Project is a major initiative to expand green cover in the five-km buffer area around the Aravallis in 29 districts of the three states and a Union territory. The government said this initiative will play a crucial role in combating air pollution in the region, achieving India's climate goal of creating an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent and restoring 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030. The project will enhance the biodiversity of the Aravallis through afforestation, reforestation and restoration of water bodies. It will also help improve soil fertility and water availability in the region, the government said. It added that the project will benefit local communities by generating employment and income opportunities. The Chief Ministers of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat also participated in the launch of the project. Officials from the Environment Ministry said around 1,000 nurseries will be developed in the 29 districts located in the Aravalli range as part of the initiative. The five-km wide green buffer will cover 6.45 million hectares across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi. Within this buffer zone, about 42% (2.7 million hectares) of land is currently degraded. The Aravalli range acts as a natural barrier against desertification, preventing the expansion of the Thar desert and protecting cities such as Delhi, Jaipur and Gurugram. It is also the source of important rivers such as the Chambal, Sabarmati and Luni. Its forests, grasslands and wetlands support endangered plant and animal species. However, deforestation, mining, livestock grazing, and human encroachment are worsening desertification, damaging aquifers, drying up lakes and reducing the range's ability to sustain wildlife. Of the total degraded area, 81% is in Rajasthan, 15.8% in Gujarat, 1.7% in Haryana and 1.6% in Delhi.
