'Pillars and goals model is the foundation': Telangana govt policy to inject new life into sports ecosystem; focus on state-level support
HYDERABAD: At long last, the Telangana Sports Policy, which has been in the making ever since the sports loving chief minister A Revanth Reddy assumed charge, has seen the light of the day.
It's a clear step-up on the policy document of the state issued in Jan 2016.
It's a vision document that envisages a holistic development of sports and identifies the pitfalls that befall sport in the country at large. And it does well to address the issue of identifying and developing a sportsperson from scratch, the need for associations to work for a cause, the much-needed support structures to nurture, incentivise in keeping with the level of competition and bring them back into the ecosystem post-retirement.

Pillar 1 deals with Governance and Organisation. Pillar 2 is about the Sports Ecosystem with focus on developing a sustainable ecosystem, drive accessibility and integrate sports into education. Pillar 3 is associated with Long-term Athlete Development (LTAD), including talent identification. Pillar 4 deals with Infrastructure and Pillar 5 caters to creating career pathways, post-retirement support, and upskilling and reskilling opportunities.
Governance and Organisation is a critical component in any sportsperson's development. The policy addresses the bane of rift-riven sports associations. To curb this menace of dissent and parallel association, the policy advocates a single registration process and licences for only associations recognised by relevant national federation. It also talks of regular audits and a consolidated annual tournament calendar integrated with the Chief Minister's Cup.
The proposed Sports Hub, to be administered by a board of governors, will oversee the Telangana Sports Development Fund (TSDF). Also on the anvil is the Young India Physical Education and Sports University of Telangana (YIPESU), which will be a state govt university.
The Young India Sports Academy (YISA) aims to be a high-performance sports development institute that will operate in a hub-and-spoke model. Its objectives include establishment of world-class academies in hockey, badminton, football, swimming, tennis, shooting, boxing, volleyball, wrestling, basketball, table tennis, athletics, archery and gymnastics.
Air sports, e-sports and pickleball are also under consideration.
YISA plans to provide a residential school setting to pursue sports and academics.
The state govt also wants to start a special zone for manufacturing sports goods in the state and the LTAD includes sports schools, school-level talent identification and residential school sport academies, Centres of Excellence (CoEs), sports science integration and mental health awareness, which has of late dominated the sports scene with top athletes taking mental health breaks.
The policy provides job opportunities as well as pensions for retired athletes and coaches. Graded incentives for athletes and coaches are also included. The policy is clear-cut, but implementation will be the real test. Just as there is a need for a new mindset for parents to push their wards into sport, there is an urgent need for reformation in administration. Casting the net wide is as important as not losing any athlete along the way.

Centre unsure of T's Khelo India & Olympic bids
Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy is keen for Telangana to host the 2026 Khelo India games; however, the Centre has informed Parliament that it is currently unable to confirm the feasibility of this proposal. It also clarified that Telangana's Olympic bid falls under the authority of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). In a reply to Congress MP Kiran Kumar Reddy, the sports ministry said, "To conduct the Khelo India games, the ministry designates a state as the host. Selection is based on the availability of essential resources, such as sports infrastructure, adequate hotel accommodation, smooth physical connectivity to the venues of different events, and various other technical requirements. Therefore, it is not possible at this stage to decide whether Telangana will be a host state for the future Khelo India Games. " Regarding Telangana's bid to host the Olympics, the ministry explained that the Olympic games in India are the responsibility of the IOA, and the allocation of hosting rights is made by the International olympic committee (IOC) through a detailed host selection process, which is publicly available. The ministry also noted that the Telangana govt has submitted several proposals to improve sports infrastructure under the "creation and upgradation of sports infrastructure" component of the Khelo India scheme. These include the construction of a multipurpose sports complex (stadium), an all-weather swimming pool in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, and a synthetic 400m, 8-lane athletic track in the same district. Other proposals include an 8-lane synthetic athletic track with fencing, seating, and washrooms at Palamuru University campus, Mahabubnagar; a multipurpose hall at Satavahana University, Karimnagar. Telangana liberates sports from political interference with its new policy
HYDERABAD: Asserting that his government was making sustained efforts to promote sports and sportspersons in the state, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy unveiled the Telangana Sports Policy - 2025 here on Saturday. The policy, he said, was aimed at reducing political interference by adopting a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. A sports board comprising former players and experts will oversee its execution. Addressing the gathering at the first edition of the Sports Conclave after unveiling the policy, he alleged that negligence by the previous BRS government had left stadiums in the state reduced to venues for marriages, private events and sunburn parties. Revanth recalled the city's sporting past: 'Hyderabad hosted National Games in 2002, Commonwealth Games in 2003 and World Military Games in 2007. The Gachibowli area was developed only because of the sports stadium there. Over the previous BRS government's decade-long tenure, all stadiums were neglected and converted into function halls. The Congress government is making all necessary efforts to change this situation.' Calling it an 'insult to the country' that India has not won an Olympic gold in recent times, Revanth said: 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning to host the 2036 Olympics in India.' World-class athletes needed: Revanth 'India has the money, the space and cities like Hyderabad to host the Games, but without even a single gold medal, how can we show our strength? That is why we need to create world-class sportspersons in the coming days,' Revanth added The chief minister said he had urged the Centre to allow Telangana to host the Khelo India Games 2026 and two disciplines of the Olympics in Hyderabad. He added that sports will have a dedicated section in the Telangana Rising 2047 vision document.
