Five injured as express bus veers into wrong lane, collides with three vehicles in Ranau
The incident happened around 10pm when the Scania express bus, carrying 22 passengers along with the driver and a conductor, was heading to Semporna from Kota Kinabalu.
The bus was believed to have been speeding before cutting at a double lane and hitting a Perodua Ativa, a Proton Saga and a trailer truck.
Ranau District Police Chief Superintendent Mursalin Mahmud said initial investigations found that the 65-year-old bus driver had overtaken a vehicle in a dangerous manner before colliding with the right side of a Perodua Ativa car driven by a 30-year-old man.
'The bus then hit the back of a Proton Saga car driven by a 51-year-old man, before the Proton Saga rammed into the rear of the trailer truck in front of it.
'The five injured victims consisted of the bus driver, three passengers of the express bus, namely a woman and two men, and the driver of the Proton Saga. All the injured victims are being treated at the Ranau Hospital,' he said today.

The driver of the Perodua Ativa and the trailer did not suffer any injuries.
Mursalin said blood and urine tests would be taken from the bus driver to detect if there is any presence of alcohol or prohibited substances.
Investigation also found that the bus driver had three outstanding summonses.
The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless driving causing an accident, said Mursalin.
A team of personnel from the Ranau Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) were at the scene of the incident to help the trapped victims.
Earlier on Friday night, several dash-cam recordings went viral showing an express bus entering the opposite lane and almost hitting another vehicle.
Also going viral was another recording that showed the same express bus entering a wrong lane while passing through the Kundasang Cabbage Roundabout.
Authorities are currently carrying out an investigation. — The Borneo Post

Criminals laundering money via social media, crypto deals, says expert

PUTRAJAYA : Regulators must 'up their game' to combat emerging money laundering methods involving unlicensed money changers and social media platforms, a regional financial crime expert said today. Jessica Chuah, vice-president of Growth (Asia Pacific) at Crystal Intelligence, said criminals were increasingly using Telegram, Facebook and Instagram to promote peer-to-peer (P2P) cryptocurrency trades that masked illegal fund flows. 'These days, people say 'I want to buy Bitcoin or Ethereum', but a lot of those funds are illegitimate,' she said on the sidelines of the International Conference on Governance and Integrity 2025. 'They'll look for unlicensed money changers, often advertised as P2P traders on Telegram or Facebook. The commission is slightly higher, but the appeal is that you can't trace them. 'It's like I want to sell to you, and you want to buy, (it looks) just like I'm selling to my mother,' she said. Chuah said these informal transactions were deliberately structured to avoid licensed crypto exchanges, which were bound by Malaysia's anti-money laundering (AML) laws. 'They will not go to the licensed ones. The moment they do, AML kicks in. So, they go to the silent players. Technically, it's quiet under the law. There's no record. That's the biggest threat. You're facilitating money laundering and disrupting the financial system,' she said. Corporates complicit in silence Also speaking at the conference, Joshua James, regional cybercrime and counter-fraud coordinator for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, said businesses such as banks and telcos were ignoring fraud risks because enforcement could hurt their profits. 'Some of the companies are making a lot of money off of scams and fraud. And they don't have a strong incentive to be able to detect it,' he said. James said even strong local laws might not be enough, as international criminal networks operated beyond national borders. As such, he urged the country to lead by example in tightening domestic standards and demanding the same from its trade partners. 'That forces others to improve too,' he said.
