NFL rules proposal changes carry some interesting suggestions
There are some intriguing rules proposals for owners to discuss and debate this offseason.
The Green Bay Packers are going after another team that wears green. The Packers are trying to get the Philadelphia Eagles' Tush Push banned.
Ahead of the Annual League Meeting, @NFL clubs are proposing three rule changes for the 2025 season. A 🧵 1 /3 👇The @packers propose changing Rule 12, Section 1.Read how it's currently written: https://t.co/mvZcnttJVm pic.twitter.com/a0p2R3Uxqa

The Lions are suggesting a rule that makes a lot of sense, getting away from an automatic first down on defensive holding and illegal contact. Too often, these penalties give first downs for fouls that are negligible.

The Eagles would like overtime rules amended to make sure both teams have a chance to get the football should the game go into an extra session in the regular season because it is tied.

Detroit also has made a pitch for a rules change that many fans will agree with: By Detroit; amends Article XX, Section 20.2 of the Constitution & Bylaws, to amend the current playoff seeding format to allow Wild Card teams to be seeded higher than Division Champions if the Wild Card team has a better regular season record.
From our folks at NFL Research, this is how the seeding would've looked for this past postseason under the #Lions' new proposal to seed by record. So AFC Wild Card weekend would've been similar (LAC home vs HOU though) but NFC would've been:LAR at PHITB at MINGB at WAS pic.twitter.com/0nAvVivtLb

Garrett Williams is only Arizona Cardinals CB in top 32 per PFF
Garrett Williams is only Arizona Cardinals CB in top 32 per PFF Williams ranks 22 in PFF's top 32 CBs entering 2025. The Arizona Cardinals have a young group of cornerbacks. Of the four top players on their roster, Star Thomas and Garrett Williams enter their third NFL seasons, Max Melton enters his second and Will Johnson, selected in the second round in April, is a rookie. As such, they haven't proven much in the league, except for one. PFF ranked the top 32 cornerbacks in the NFL and Williams makes the cut, coming in at No. 22. After struggling in his rookie season and missing more than half the year, resulting in a 57.2 PFF coverage grade, Williams was excellent in 2024 with an 83.7 PFF coverage grade (fourth best) and the seventh-best PFF advanced coverage grade. If he's able to replicate his sophomore campaign in which he allowed 0.68 yards and the second-fewest yards in coverage, Williams could jump into the top 10. If Williams continues to play at the level he did last season, if Melton takes a second-year leap and if Johnson is as good as many believe he can be, the Cardinals' secondary will be very, very good in 2025. Ex-Aaron Rodgers Teammate Allen Lazard Gets Cold Feet About Joining Steelers
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. After a game of cat and mouse that lasted two-and-a-half months, the Pittsburgh Steelers finally got their guy. The team announced on Thursday evening that it had signed four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a one-year deal, bringing an end to one of the lengthiest and most drama-filled storylines of the NFL offseason. But now that the Steelers have addressed their biggest area of need, another one requires their attention — the glaring hole at wide receiver opened up after the team traded George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys last month for third- and sixth-round picks. Several names have been floated as possible Pickens replacements over the last few weeks, but one that's been thrown out more than any other is current New York Jets receiver Allen Lazard, who's spent all seven seasons of his NFL career as Rodgers' teammate. And while it's easy to connect the dots on a potential Rodgers-Lazard reunion, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio recently revealed that Lazard may actually have some reservations about continuing to be tied at the hip to the 10-time Pro Bowl QB. "Per a source with knowledge of Lazard's thinking, he sees a very real potential benefit to proving his ability to function at an acceptable level without Rodgers as his quarterback," Florio reported. "That doesn't mean Lazard would reject the opportunity to play with Rodgers again. But it's not an automatic, knee-jerk, no-brainer. Lazard, at the end of the day, may prefer to make his own path." Allen Lazard #13 of the Green Bay Packers celebrates his touchdown with Aaron Rodgers #12 in the first quarter against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on December 01, 2019 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. More PhotoThere's no question, Lazard is an effective weapon when paired with Rodgers. His two best seasons—2021 (40 catches, 513 yards, eight touchdowns) and 2022 (60 catches, 788 yards, six touchdowns)—were with a healthy, pre-Achilles injury Rodgers throwing him the ball. In fact, the one season Rodgers was injured and Lazard was catching passes from someone else, he had the worst season of his career (23 receptions, 311 yards, one TD). "Lazard has a well-earned reputation of being two different players. With Rodgers, good. Without Rodgers, not," Florio continued. "... He has a much better chance of [continuing his career] if he can take advantage of his opportunity with the Jets to prove that he can thrive without Rodgers as his quarterback." If Lazard is, in fact, a no-go for the Steelers, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport believes the team will be aggressive in its pursuit of landing Rodgers another offensive weapon. "I do expect the Pittsburgh Steelers to continue to search for one more weapon," Rapoport said on Friday. "... Jonnu Smith — there was a phone call there. Kyle Pitts — there was a phone call there. The Steelers are in the market for at least one more playmaker." For more NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

The Aaron Rodgers effect? Here's the latest NFL power rankings based on Super Bowl odds
The Aaron Rodgers effect? Here's the latest NFL power rankings based on Super Bowl odds Aaron Rodgers is headed to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Meh? Horray? Look out for AFC North, the entire AFC, and the entire league? The news has certainly shifted a significant focus toward Steel City, where Rodgers will most likely become the franchise's 10th starting quarterback in the past decade. Alongside the Super Bowl-winning slinger, Rodgers will have a new target in wideout DK Metcalf and a new head coach who has yet to endure a losing season. How the addition actually reshapes the NFL hierarchy remains to be seen, though, and the oddsmakers seem to view this as nothing more than … a nice pickup.
