Audio guidance system for blind people launched in Mysuru buses

in KSRTC city buses in Mysuru, a step aimed at empowering blind passengers to travel independently.
Speaking after launching the facility, he said, "This technology enables visually impaired commuters to board buses without assistance, using special audio guidance devices. While 125 buses in Bengaluru have already been fitted with the system, it has now been introduced in 200 city buses in Mysuru. Gradually, the facility will be extended to 7,000 KSRTC buses across Karnataka." He further noted that all newly procured KSRTC buses will be equipped with the system at the manufacturing stage itself.
Narasimharaja MLA Tanveer Sait described the initiative as a progressive step in public transport: "It's encouraging that the transport department is leveraging information technology to support the visually impaired. Public transport must be accessible to everyone. The arrival of 500 pending electric buses in Shalthinur should also be expedited. DTOs and inspectors must assess public needs and improve connectivity, including introducing new routes."
Anil, a blind passenger, shared his experience: "With this device, we can now board buses without seeking help. We have been trained to use it. By pressing the speaker button, we can select and board our required bus."
Balakrishnan, professor at IIT Delhi, where this 'on-board' device was developed, said, "The primary objective is to enable public buses without any assistance. They faced two challenges: what is the route number of the bus, and they need to depend on others; second, they do not know where it comes from and where the door is. They need assistance to get into the bus. With this device, they need not depend on anybody."

Tata Motors begins delivery of 148 EVs to BMTC
Bengaluru: Tata Motors has commenced the delivery of 148 advanced Tata Starbus electric buses to the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). This latest induction adds to the city's growing fleet of 921 Tata electric buses already in operation, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable urban mobility. The new buses were flagged off by Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy and BMTC Managing Director Ramachandran R., IAS, alongside senior government and BMTC officials. 'These e-buses have consistently demonstrated high uptime, reliability and comfort. The new additions will help us expand our network and offer safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly travel options to the public,' said Ramachandran. The fleet will be operated and maintained by TML Smart City Mobility Solutions Ltd., a Tata Motors subsidiary, under a 12-year contract. Tata Motors stated that the buses have collectively clocked over six crore kilometres across the city, reflecting strong operational efficiency. Anand S., Vice President at Tata Motors, said, 'We are proud to support BMTC's sustainability goals with on-time delivery, advanced technology, and consistent service performance. Our Starbus EVs are designed for high-performance intra-city transit and ensure a citizen-first experience.' The low-floor, 35-seater Starbus EVs feature modern electric drivetrains, electronic stability and brake distribution systems, and integrated transport connectivity tools. With zero tailpipe emissions, the electric buses are expected to further improve Bengaluru's air quality while showcasing a replicable model for green public transport in Indian cities.

Rekha Gupta Unveils Plan To Overhaul Delhi's Broken Bus System
New Delhi: In a bid to fix its flailing public transport, the Delhi government has kicked off what it calls a comprehensive overhaul of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). A high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta today laid out the blueprint for route rationalisation, universal smart cards, modernised terminals, and commuter-friendly bus shelters. Transport Minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh, Chief Secretary, Transport Commissioner, and senior officials were present. The message from the top was clear - the system is broken, and the fix won't be cosmetic. "We've inherited a transport system in disrepair, Rs 60,000 crore in losses, but we're prepared to fix it," Ms Gupta said. "Delhi deserves a transit system that's modern, reliable, and accessible to all," she added. Smart Cards to Work Across DTC, Metro, RRTS The government plans to roll out a universal smart card usable on DTC buses, Delhi Metro, and the upcoming Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). Special 'Pink Cards' will offer free travel for women and transgender passengers on DTC buses and banks have been brought in for phased distribution. Officials hope the move will streamline ticketing and increase ridership across the network, which continues to suffer from fragmented services. IIT Delhi to Redraw Bus Routes In partnership with IIT Delhi, the government will rationalise DTC routes, many untouched for decades. The first pilot will begin in East Delhi's trans-Yamuna region, where connectivity remains a chronic issue. "Even with 4,800 electric buses, our routes haven't caught up with urban growth," Ms Gupta noted. Rusting Shelters to Get Smart Makeover Of Delhi's 4,627 bus queue shelters, less than half are currently functional. The government plans a citywide revamp with smart features - Real-time information screens, solar power, and weather protection, executed via a public-private partnership. Officials say the new shelters will borrow from transit models across India and abroad, tailored to Delhi's unique needs. ISBTs To Be Turned Into 'Airport-Like' Hubs The three major inter-state bus terminals - Kashmere Gate, Anand Vihar, and Sarai Kale Khan - are also slated for a complete revamp. Plans include digital signage, waiting lounges, and improved amenities. While no specific timelines were given, officials said work would begin "within weeks." Electric Bus Fleet Spurs Depot Upgrades With 660 mini electric buses (DEVI) and 1,800 large e-buses now in service, the government is investing in charging infrastructure, maintenance facilities, and support systems at DTC depots. "DEVI buses have become lifelines in crowded areas, bridging last-mile gaps," said Dr Singh. "We're upgrading depots and terminals to match the growing EV fleet's needs for both drivers and commuters," he added. For now, it's a reform plan heavy on intent. The real test will be execution.

Karnataka govt's Shakti scheme registers 500 cr free bus rides
'Sakthi' scheme, announced by the Congress government in Karnataka, providing free bus travel for women, crossed the 500 crore free rides mark on Monday, officials said. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, his deputy D K Shivakumar, and Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy celebrated the occasion by symbolically issuing the 500th crore free ticket to a woman passenger here. 'Shakti' scheme, which provides free bus travel for all women domiciled in the state, is among the five guarantee schemes implemented by the Congress government on coming to power. Launched on June 11, 2023, the scheme has so far cost the government Rs 12,669 crore, officials said. "As this is a special occasion I have symbolically issued the 500th crore free ticket to a woman passenger," Siddaramaiah later told reporters. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) said, by offering free bus travel to women, the scheme has significantly contributed to the economic, social, educational, professional and health empowerment of women across the state. Before the launch of the Shakti Scheme, around 85.84 lakh passengers were travelling by bus daily, now this number has risen to 1.17 crore passengers per day, highlighting the scheme's massive impact, it said in a release. Pointing at the operational expansion post-Shakti scheme roll out, it said the number of scheduled services increased from 21,164 (pre-Shakti) to 23,635 (post-Shakti), and the total number of buses increased from 23,948 to 26,130, including the replacement of 2,828 old vehicles. According to KSRTC, to mark the milestone, the CM, the Deputy CM and the transport minister presented and felicitated 30 women passengers, including students, senior citizens, and transgender individuals, with Ilkal sarees, sweets and roses. The woman who received the 500th crore Shakti ticket was honoured by the chief minister with a shawl, floral garland, and a memento. Members of Vijayapura's 'Odala Dhwani Stree Sangha' (women's group), empowered by the Shakti Scheme, started producing and selling organic rotis and holiges (sweet) in Bengaluru, generating lakhs in revenue. As a gesture of gratitude, they presented rotis to the CM, Deputy Chief Minister, and the transport minister, the release said.
