I-Day Long Weekend: Hotel occupancy, room rates set to climb on travel surge

News18a day ago
New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) Hotel occupancy rates and room tariffs are set to rise this Independence Day long weekend as travellers across India head to various destinations, major industry players said.
Rajesh Magow, Co-founder and Group CEO, MakeMyTrip told PTI, Independence Day has emerged as a key travel occasion over the years.
'This year too, the search and booking trends point to strong intent to travel over the Independence Day weekend. With Independence Day on a Friday, travel demand appears to be peaking two days earlier, on Wednesday (13 August), giving early travellers a five-day window," he shared.
According to him, the top trending domestic destinations are Goa, Udaipur, Jaipur, Puri, Lonavala, Varanasi, Coorg, Mahabaleshwar, Ooty and Pondicherry, while the leading international destinations are Pattaya, Bali, Bangkok, Singapore, Dubai, Phuket, Colombo, Kuala Lumpur, Zurich and London.
Puneet Chhatwal, MD and CEO of Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), the country's biggest hospitality firm, which owns the Taj brand, said, 'The long weekend is looking very good. We have a lot of resort destinations, so we are very pleased to see all the buoyancy come back".
K B Kachru, President, Hotel Association of India (HAI) and Chairman, South Asia, Radisson Hotel Group, said this year, 15 August falls on a Friday, offering an ideal opportunity for staycations and short holidays. HAI member hotels are well-prepared to accommodate the surge, with many already witnessing a rise in advance bookings.
'Reports and trends indicate a rise in both occupancy and room rates over the long Independence Day weekend. Some properties are witnessing up to a 40 per cent surge in bookings compared to last year, with ADRs expected to be 10-15 per cent higher year-on-year," Kachru said.
Chander K Baljee, CMD at Royal Orchid Hotels Ltd (ROHL), said, 'We are seeing steady interest for the extended Independence Day weekend from August 14 to 17. While the booking momentum is yet to fully pick up, we anticipate strong last-minute demand, which is quite typical for long weekends in the domestic market.
'Compared to the same period last year, we're observing an approximate increase of Rs 1,280 in rates. We expect the Average Room Rate (ARR) to close around Rs 6,450, which is a 7-8 per cent increase over last year's ARR of Rs 6,000 on the retail segment," he added. PTI RSN RKL DR DR

Pakistan will set up Rocket Force Command: Shehbaz

Pakistan will establish a new military force to supervise its missile capabilities, the Prime Minister has said, after its worst conflict in decades with India. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the formation of the Rocket Force Command while addressing an Independence Day ceremony in Islamabad attended by senior military officials late on Wednesday (August 13, 2025). 'It will be equipped with modern technology and capable of striking the enemy from all directions,' Mr. Sharif said at the ceremony, during which the deadly clash with India in May dominated official speeches and displays. 'It will improve our conventional war capabilities,' he said, commending the military for its performance. Pakistan and India fought an intense four-day conflict in May that killed dozens of people on both sides in missile, drone and artillery fire, the worst clashes between the nuclear-armed neighbours since 1999. Higher defence spend Islamabad is boosting its military capabilities following the conflict, increasing defence spending by 20% in the current Budget that was passed in June. It also announced that it was in discussions to acquire 40 new Chinese fighter jets and new air defence systems. 'After the recent conflict, the object of course is to further strengthen Pakistan's military capability and this is a part of that process,' defence analyst Talat Masood said. The May conflict was triggered by a deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in the death of 26 civilians. Islamabad is in talks to acquire 40 new Chinese fighter jets and new air defence systems.

IMEC is long-term project built on a shared vision of diversifying supply chains: Gérard Mestrallet

The IMEC corridor is a long-term project built on a shared vision of diversifying supply chains between three regions while creating new mutually beneficial interdependencies, and generating growth and socio-economic development along its route. France and India's cooperation on IMEC is rooted in their strong strategic partnership. This bilateral dialogue feeds directly into the project's strategic vision, French Special Envoy on IMEC Gérard Mestrallet told ET's Dipanjan Roy Chaudhury during his recent India visit. Independence Day 2025 Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji gave India its own currency Swadeshi 2.0: India is no longer just a market, it's a maker What is the French view on IMEC amid volatility in West Asia? The IMEC corridor is a long-term project built on a shared vision of diversifying supply chains between three regions while creating new mutually beneficial interdependencies, and generating growth and socio-economic development along its route. My two main priorities have been to structure collective governance among IMEC MoU signatories, and launch diagnostic and feasibility studies — an essential step to assess investment needs. Following this preliminary phase, a precise development plan will be defined, with the private sector playing a central role. Many infrastructure and investment projects already exist along the IMEC route. The challenge is to accelerate capacity development or build the missing links, particularly for the rail segment in the Middle East. What are the distinct advantages of the Port of Marseille as an entry point for IMEC? The port of Marseille is already a multidimensional connectivity hub and a gateway to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. The port of Marseille Fos is now set to become one of the main entry and exit points for IMEC in Europe and the Mediterranean. With that being said, the IMEC concept does not exclude the possibility of there being several interconnection points in the regions served. Marseille Fos stands out as a triple hub: logistics and industry, shipping, and digital services. Marseille is already at the crossroads of several European corridors, forming part of two trans-European transport networks and the H2med network via the BarMar link. Further, Marseille is the sixth largest digital hub in the world. By 2027, the city will be connected to 54 countries via 16 submarine cable networks, with six cables scheduled to become operational between 2025 and 2027. In terms of energy, Marseille Fos port has major ambitions in the carbon-free hydrogen sector. It is also home to the headquarters of CMA CGM, a global maritime leader, which is also investing in one of the Mundra Port terminals. How is France collaborating with India to implement IMEC? France and India's cooperation on IMEC is rooted in their strong strategic partnership. This bilateral dialogue feeds directly into the project's strategic vision. While IMEC requires consultation between all signatory countries, some may naturally be more proactive than others. I believe that this is an ambition shared by India and France – as illustrated by France organizing the inaugural IMEC Sherpas meeting in May 2025, and India convening the first IMEC Steering Committee meeting in early August in New Delhi. The year 2026, designated as the India-France Year of Innovation, will offer further opportunities to advance this approach and explore solutions to key challenges in digital connectivity, which is one of the pillars of IMEC alongside logistics and energy connectivity.

Consumer commission fines photographers for deficient wedding services

Koppal: The District Consumer Redressal Commission has ruled in favour of a couple who lodged a complaint against photographers for failing to provide promised wedding services. The commission has ordered the photographers to pay compensation and costs for the deficient service. According to consumer complaint No. 72/2024, Lekhana and Arpan from Koppal, hired Roshan Christopher and Emmanuel of Wedhoods Woollex, BTM Layout, Bengaluru, to provide photography and videography services for their pre-and post-wedding ceremonies. A contract was signed for Rs 1.2 lakh to cover the wedding ceremonies in Sakleshpur and Chikkamagaluru from Nov 28 to Nov 30, 2022, with Rs 1 lakh paid through UPI transactions. However, the couple later approached the consumer commission, alleging that the services provided by the company failed to meet the agreed terms. The commission, chaired by GE Saubhagyalakshmi and member Raju N Maitri, directed the photographers to pay Rs 25,000 as compensation to the complainants, along with interest at 6% per annum from the date of the complaint until the amount was paid. Additionally, Rs 5,000 was ordered to cover complaint expenses. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
