PETALING JAYA : More than 10 corpses, including that of a baby, have been found in the implementation of the Sungai Klang flood mitigation project under the Selangor Maritime Gateway initiative.
Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd managing director Syaiful Azmen Nordin said the discoveries are not isolated incidents, and have happened many times since work to widen and deepen the river began on Nov 1, 2022.
'So far, we have handed over 10 corpses to the police and the fire and rescue department for further investigation.
'We once found three corpses at one time,' Sinar Harian reported him as saying after a site visit in Kota Kemuning today.
Syaiful said pollution also poses a challenge to the project, with the discovery of heavy items such as refrigerators, lorry tyres, mattresses, couches and motorcycles at the bottom of the river.
'I don't understand how a refrigerator ended up in the river,' he said.
He said the project has seen more than 918,936 cubic metres of matter, including sediment, garbage and rocks, extracted from the bottom of Sungai Klang.

BESUT, June 17 — A three-year-old girl was found drowned in an irrigation canal near her grandmother's home in Kampung Bukit Kenak Tok Kundur, Jerteh, on Monday evening, according to Sinar Harian. Besut district police chief Superintendent Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said police received a report about the incident from the girl's father at 8.53pm the same day. The victim, identified as Intan Inara Mohammad Hariz Husaini, is believed to have exited through the back door of her grandmother's house and played alone in the backyard unnoticed. 'On the day of the incident, the victim was visiting her grandmother's house with her family. 'However, around 6.10pm, the victim was found floating in an irrigation canal about 300 metres from the house by her uncle, who then rushed her to Besut Hospital. 'A medical officer confirmed that she had died,' Azamuddin said in a statement, as reported by Sinar Harian. He added that a post-mortem was conducted yesterday to determine the cause of death, and the case has been classified as sudden death. Azamuddin urged parents to always monitor the movements of young children, especially in risky areas. 'Children's safety is a shared responsibility. We urge parents to increase supervision to prevent such incidents from recurring,' he said, according to the Malay-language daily. Police also cautioned the public against making any speculations or spreading unverified information that could disrupt investigations. Members of the public with information on crimes in the area are encouraged to contact the Besut district police headquarters at 09-6956222.

Haj travel fraud hard to detect when agents use holiday cover, says Islamic Affairs minister after 47 Malaysian pilgrims duped

JASIN, June 17 — The company linked to a recent fraud involving 47 Malaysian haj pilgrims has been confirmed to be operating without a valid licence or accreditation as a Haj Pilgrimage Operator (PJH), which is required to manage haj travel arrangements. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said preliminary checks showed that the agent in question was not affiliated with any company officially accredited by Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) or the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Haj and Umrah. 'It is not a PJH company and most likely a travel agent. There is also a possibility that they entered Jeddah illegally to perform the haj using tourist visas or those from other countries, and if that is the case, it would indeed be difficult for us to detect the offence,' he told reporters after visiting and distributing prayer items to the Muslim community at Kampung Orang Asli Bukit Seraya here yesterday. Commenting further, Mohd Na'im said the group of pilgrims was believed to have first travelled to another destination, most likely Türkiye, before entering Saudi Arabia. 'In this case, I understand they travelled from Jeddah via Türkiye and not directly back here (to Malaysia). So they entered Jeddah from Türkiye, and we cannot stop them if their stated reason is for a holiday or similar,' he said. He added that his ministry had undertaken numerous measures to curb such fraud cases, including issuing no fewer than 10 media statements during each haj season to warn pilgrims to remain vigilant against unscrupulous parties. Among the efforts, he said, included setting up a special task force with TH, the Immigration Department and the Royal Malaysia Police, as well as tightening regulatory oversight of all haj travel agents and taking stern action against unlicensed operators. Media reports previously stated that 47 Malaysian pilgrims were believed to have been duped by a local haj agent allegedly linked to a well-known religious figure. — Bernama
