PETALING JAYA : More than 10 corpses, including that of a baby, have been found in the implementation of the Sungai Klang flood mitigation project under the Selangor Maritime Gateway initiative.
Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd managing director Syaiful Azmen Nordin said the discoveries are not isolated incidents, and have happened many times since work to widen and deepen the river began on Nov 1, 2022.
'So far, we have handed over 10 corpses to the police and the fire and rescue department for further investigation.
'We once found three corpses at one time,' Sinar Harian reported him as saying after a site visit in Kota Kemuning today.
Syaiful said pollution also poses a challenge to the project, with the discovery of heavy items such as refrigerators, lorry tyres, mattresses, couches and motorcycles at the bottom of the river.
'I don't understand how a refrigerator ended up in the river,' he said.
He said the project has seen more than 918,936 cubic metres of matter, including sediment, garbage and rocks, extracted from the bottom of Sungai Klang.

Whistleblowers met me last week, says Rafizi as he links son's assault to scandal exposé

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli today said that a group of whistleblowers had approached him last week with information on a scandal, and alleged that an attack on his son was meant to stop him from pursuing the matter. He said in his opinion this was a strategy to ensure that he drops the matter altogether. 'I've given the same statement to the police, in my view, this is an attempt to shut my mouth, meaning there is something I'm looking at and this is a message (to me) so that I hands off from that matter,' he said 'Last week, there was a group of whistleblowers who came to me regarding a scandal, that I can tell. 'It means that, whoever is behind this knows, usually when I begin to look at a scandal I will dig and dig and dig and at the same time people with information will come forward,' he added. PSM pans police probe into deputy chief over Parliament scuffle

PSM secretary-general M Sivaranjani said organisers had informed the police, Parliament and MPs that the rally would be held outside the gates, not inside the compound. PETALING JAYA : Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) has slammed the police investigation into its deputy chairman, S Arutchelvan, over a scuffle outside Parliament yesterday. Calling it unjust, PSM secretary-general M Sivaranjani said Arutchelvan was pushed to the ground and also injured during the scuffle. 'This is clearly visible in various media reports and videos posted on social media. 'Now, he is being investigated when he is actually the victim,' she said in a statement today. The clash occurred when police stopped a group of more than 100 estate workers, led by Arutchelvan, from marching to Parliament's gates. The workers had walked from Taman Tugu to submit a memorandum on housing and a draft bill making it compulsory for estates to provide homes for local plantation workers. Although blocked from gathering at the gates, the group managed to hand over the documents to deputy law and institutional reform minister M Kulasegaran and opposition chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan. However, Kuala Lumpur police said yesterday that the commotion left a police officer injured, and that an investigation had been launched. City police chief Fadli Marsus said the case was being investigated under Section 353 of the Penal Code for using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty, and Section 427 for mischief. In a statement, Arutchelvan said he would present himself at the Dang Wangi police station at 2pm today with his legal team after being contacted by a police inspector at 10pm yesterday. He said the incident was recorded and public, and that their only intention had been to submit the memorandum. 'I deny that there was any aggression on our part during the handover of the memorandum, as we have the right to assemble peacefully under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution,' he added.

MACC seeks Mindef reports in probe on senior military officers' smuggling links

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will seek additional information from the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) to complete its investigation into three serving and two former senior military officers allegedly linked to a smuggling syndicate in the southern region of the country. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the information, including reports classified as confidential, is expected to aid investigations into activities believed to be occurring mainly in the waters of the Straits of Melaka off Melaka and Johor. 'I would like to thank the Chief of Defence Force for supporting the MACC and facilitating our investigation. 'We will also approach the Ministry of Defence to obtain additional information, including some confidential reports,' he told reporters during the MACC Chief Commissioners' Roundtable Conference here today. He said the three serving senior officers and two former military officers, from the army and navy, were arrested under operations codenamed 'Op Sohor' on suspicion of acting as 'enablers' in the smuggling activities. Yesterday, the media reported that 10 individuals, including three serving and two former senior military officers aged between 30 and 55, and an Indonesian national, were arrested around the Klang Valley through 'Op Sohor'. The operations were conducted by the MACC Intelligence Division in collaboration with the Anti-Corruption Tactical Squad (ACTS) team, starting at 6.30 am. All suspects were brought to the Putrajaya Magistrate's Court today for a remand application under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009. — Bernama
